I'm pretty sure they are considering that source is getting pretty out dated but it was fabulous while it lasted. hl2 still looks better than a lot of next gen games. I bet they are gonna be developing episode 3 with source v2.

No!! I don't want Episode 3, I want HL3 with a new entire engine (no Source v2, although it was one of the best gfx engines so far) , which will be compare to CryEngine 2 and ID new engine.I'm pretty sure they are considering that source is getting pretty out dated but it was fabulous while it lasted. hl2 still looks better than a lot of next gen games. yeah, i'm expecting source 2 and unreal engine 4 to arrive quite soon, in answer to cryteks cryengine 3, it makes sense doesn't it?I'm pretty sure they are considering that source is getting pretty out dated but it was fabulous while it lasted. hl2 still looks better than a lot of next gen games. well it is still better overal than unreal 3 so they probably aren't too concerned about a new engine yet, sure they will have a new engine ready got hl3 though. imprezawrx500Dude, the source engine only supports lightmaps pre rendered lightsources it doesnt support dynamic lights like unreal engine 3.
Right now? In the earlier works. Just updating the Source engine seems like something more plausible.skrat_01
Exactly. With Episode 3, they are going to leave it at source. When DX11 and new consoles kick in, then they'll make a new engine (hopefully not called Source 2, yuck!).
I just wish they'd announce something. I mean it's been one and a half years since Orange Box.angelkimne
Get this. They originally had two seperate teams working on the episodes. One team worked on Episode 1 and another worked on Episode 2. When the first team finished Episode 1, they started to work on Episode 3. That means Episode 3 has been in years of development. And after the Orange Box, all of Valve has been working on Episode 3. They didn't make Left 4 Dead, that was Turtle Rock. So Valve has been working full force on Episode 3 for quite some time, even before the release of Left 4 Dead and the Orange Box.
Lol, it's still all lightmap based and it supports hdr done with shaders fake floating point hdr lol. the flashlights in left 4 dead dont even really cast shadows, if someone else on ur team had a light on a zombie lol you cant even see the other players light casting the shadow, because it's not per pixel lighting model engine.Source supports dynamic lightning since 2007.

I really hopes it's for a wii exclusive :)-snorlax-lol dont get ur hopes up the best chance of a console getting a valve exclusive is the 360
[QUOTE="dabigsiebowski"]yeah, i'm expecting source 2 and unreal engine 4 to arrive quite soon, in answer to cryteks cryengine 3, it makes sense doesn't it?umm no. cryengine 3 does not look better than cryengine 2. its just more optimized for consoles. expect a new engine from valve/epic next gen (whenever that is)I'm pretty sure they are considering that source is getting pretty out dated but it was fabulous while it lasted. hl2 still looks better than a lot of next gen games. I bet they are gonna be developing episode 3 with source v2.

the debut of their new engine will be half-life 3.jack_michael
^That. Half Life 2 Episode 3 will likely be the last Valve game on the HL2 engine.
I'd guess them already 30% into their new engine atleast, it took them what 4-5 years for Half Life 2 engine so i'd imagine another 5-6 years for a new engine starting from say 2005/2006.
