This is in response to the Peter Dille 8 million gap thing.

I mean, is it going to affect the great games coming out for it, or the recent momentum it has? Its selling very well right now,and thats all that matters. Not to mention that 360 sales have been down, and PS3 sales have gone way up since the Redesign and price cut, so thats telling. Im not ashamed to admit that I like it more than 360, and it still gets all the great Multiplats that 360 has.

So really, at the end of the day, who gives a **** It means nothing.

Not so much. The generation has already been decided. Sony was the biggest loser due to losing so much market share, MS didn't win but they didn't lose either, they have been making profit for 2 years and can now pump more money into their gaming division. Nintendo obviously came out as winner. So even if Sony outsells the 360, it would after years of losses that amounted to billions of dollars and major market loss compared to their previous system. Sony has dropped the ball.

Yes because apparently being able to call supremacy on anonymous forum gives us all a big ol happy feeling inside and makes us feel like more of a man/woman.

Yes. Of course it matters. I can't play my PS3 knowing there are more Xbox 360's in households.

But there slowly getting that back with the new Momentum and Sales. Im not saying they didnt drop the ball, im just saying that even if they dont out sell 360, that dosent mean they lost. they could still make money on PS3 with continued Cost Reductions andgreat sales. Theyll go on to make PS4, 5 ,6 and so on.

Same here. I know Sony will get my business ASAP next gen as I have totally written off MS for next gen for the horrible hardware this gen Ive been though. I hope MS goes totally belly up and Sega makes another run. OR heck, even Apple.

They lost in comparison to their position with previous systems. They could outsell the 360 by 10 million units and Sony would have still had the worst generation out of the three manufacturers. Reason being, they dominated with PS2 and lost much of it with PS3. Not only that, they haven't managed to make a cent on their gaming division ever since the PS3 came out. They're improving since the launch of PS3 though, no doubt. However the damage has been done. It's now an uphill battle for Sony.

Theyll get to the point where they stop losing money soon. I agree they lost alot of Marketshare, but they still have a great console with great games. and it dosent break down. and They have Great Momentum and they can begin to start getting there market share back. Im not saying all of it, but atleast some of it. It would be really foolish to say PS3 is dead right now, NPDs and recent great games show otherwise. Anyway, does it really matter if it wins of loses. Are Devs going to look at the fact that PS3 is a behind 360, and say "Oh no, now we cant put out the game on PS3 because it only has 31 million users!" Itll do fine.

It will matter to fanboys. Personally, i would say if they DO outsell it, yet fail to turn a signifigant profit = Huge fail in my book (and to stockholders) MS has been making a profit since the end of 2007, so if they get outsold, its still a plus since they didnt post a profit all last gen, and are now making BILLIONS, while have the most money spent on its platform, most software sold, highest attach rate, AND is the platform of choice for devs. It makes me chuckle when i see fanboys here laughing at timed exclusives, or discounting 30/PC games, as if it affects MS (and its shareholders) in the slightest. I love my PS3 to death (yes death!:P) but sony fell a long way this gen, and coming in even second after all the smack they talked about Ninty and MS last gen is a huge wake up call. You know what they say, Karma is a..............well.............you know...... :P

Not everyone is using 360 as leading platform anymore. Were seeing more and more devs use PS3 as the lead. and even if its not the lead, they got it to the point where it dosent matter anymore.

Indeed. Remember Sony's own words back in E3 '06.

"You'll have to work two jobs to afford this system."

"Next Generation doesn't start until we say so."

Consumers: "Oh, yeah, Sony? Well, forget you; I'm going to go buy myself a Wii &/or a 360!".:P

Yeah. At first, they didn't care about 360 beating the PS3, & didn't care about sales at all in general. But as soon as Sony brings out the slim model as well as the $300 price tag, it's statements like:

"LOL, teh 360 is doomed!".

Hypocrisy. Gotta love it.

Not so much. The generation has already been decided. Sony was the biggest loser due to losing so much market share, MS didn't win but they didn't lose either, they have been making profit for 2 years and can now pump more money into their gaming division. Nintendo obviously came out as winner. So even if Sony outsells the 360, it would after years of losses that amounted to billions of dollars and major market loss compared to their previous system. it makes me laugh that people think sony lost money on this gen.... or lost anything. what is the general oppinion about the ps3 now? it's totally worth it, but it cost way too much and took forever to get momentum. nintendo's general oppinion? casual crap, they've abandoned the hardcore. 360's? reliability sucks, customer service took a billion dollar lawsuit to not suck, basically the only positive was halo, which will be gone or sucky without bungie next gen. so the other 2 lost their reps, but yes they did make more money off their games division. HOWEVER, sony still has their reputation, and one gen of poor gaming sales for blu-ray's success? very much worth it. hell kaz probably had to drain his pool to store all the extra cash from royalties...

Um, they lost about $5 Billion from their gaming division. Plus it's not just their gaming division that's suffering. Sony as a whole is also suffering. And Sony's reputation is very damaged this gen thoughout both the PS3 & PSP.

Sony's dominance is over; accept it. They're no longer the kings of the gaming industry like they used to be two generations ago.

To me, personally, no. I get nothing from either company. But when you dominated the last two gens as Sony did, then fail to bury a wounded opponent like Nintendo, and let a new comer who srews up royally like MS take large portions of the market, then in a business sense, yeah it matters. The funny thing is Sony did it to themselves.

Im confused about what you mean by Platform of Choice. I dont get that from any of the devs. and its not like SONY has been resting on there lorels. Theyve been trying to get Exclusive stuff to and they have. Anyway, I own both, so what ever the game is best on, I get it on that.

By platform of choice i mean developed on, shown to public, demoed to public, used in examples, etc. This pushes the brand, and puts the brand in the forefront of the minds of the gaming public. Sony had this last gen.

This is a different generation than the previous one, or the one before that, where it looked like one of the competitors was going to fail as a business if their sales were subpar (last generation both Nintendo and MS seemed at risk b/c of Playstation 2's immense financial success; also, it had already killed the Dreamcast). All three seem to be either successful already -- Nintendo is making money hand over fist, and 360 has been profitable for the last few years -- or is going to get there (I predict Sony's entertainment division finally turns profitable in 2010 after three years of eating losses on the PS30.

no because the 360 is already the "Gamer's Choice" Console since it's being brought up so much.

no Big deal the PS2 was last Gen's "Gamer's Choice" and The N64 and SNES was "Gamer's Choice" the other two (then again the PSone was pretty sweet and the Dreamcast was criminally underrated)

lately, PS3 ahs been outselling it montht to month. So maybe it was all just a price thing. I think 360 is the gamer choice for a certain kind of game, as is the PS3 and the wii.

I personally stopped caring. Despite whatever the outcome may be, at this point its pretty safe to assume there will still be a next gen for all 3 because they all sold well. All I want now are just great games being released.

Oh crap, I wasn't supposed to anything non-fanboyish wasn't I? :?

Yeah, & that's the only reason why the PS3 is selling now.

Not really. The places are pretty much set in stone right now.

It's not as if any of the companies are about to drop out of making consoles any time soon, so it's not a problem.

No matter what anybody posts on here the only 100% accurate at time of release are by the Manufacturers themselves. As anybody familar with the stock market will testify, these figures produced must be accurate and are logged with the companies house, these press releases effectSony/Microsoft stock prices and have implications for tax returns amd vat payments etc... So if Microsoft and Sony say the have sold to retialers 39 & 31 million consoles then these figures are accurate.

I couldnt care what sells the most as if you have already bought one, it wont make it any less enjoyable if xyz sells more.

Yeah, & that's the only reason why the PS3 is selling now.

what I have stated is mostly true because sales of Multiplats are Higher on the 360, and most people speak of the 360 whether it's good or bad so obviously it's the "Gamer's Choice" But that doesn't neccessarily make the other consoles bad.

The Gamecube today is considered the best of Last Gen but the PS2 was the "Gamer's Choice".

Yes, because sales matter in System Wars.

mitu123
so true , sales matter for ownage in SW. on the real life, who cares?? MS was davestated the last generation and look at what it accomplished this generation, the same goes for Sony.

Yes and no. On one hand it doesn't matter. They still lost. On the other hand there is an obvious direct competitor that they can put in a position of still playing catch up.

Not really. I mean, MS's main goal for this gen was to gain marketshare and achieve profitability for the games division, and it's accomplished both. And neither Sony nor MS will approach Nintendo in total consoles sold, so there aren't exactly bragging rights at stake. My assumption is that by the end of the gen Sony may have eclipsed MS in consoles sold, but the difference won't be hugely signifigant. Sony will point to outselling the 360 with a full year disadvantage, but MS will have established itself as a serious console player, and the choice of the NA market.

Next generation will be interesting to see develop...

Going by System wars and system wars only heck yeah it's gonna be a big deal. 360 with it's year head-start (Even more in Europe) and if it cannot maintain it's lead over the PS3 it will prove that the Xbox brand doesn't have what it takes to ever overtake the Playstation brand. This gen has been undoubtedly an uphill climb for Playstation so 360 losing would be hilarious. Course MS has indeed shown they have what it takes to win the masses over which is completely the opposite of last gen, for that I commend them they have definitely done well this gen and have proven that no matter how much you milk the fanbase with crappy hardware, add-ons and online costs you still have a place in the games industry, as long as you have the games.
