Considering that Japan has historically been worth about 20 million in console sales to the dominant system of that region, if a system flounders in Japan it will have to dominate the other regions all the more to make up for it.  Japan's market size is only about half of Europe and the U.S (each) but its impact on worldwide sales outcomes is inflated due to it traditionally having very one-sided sales, giving a large number to the dominant console and 25% or less of that amount to the others.  As Japan is also the home territory of a large number of developers dominance or failure in that region also influences their support decisions.

If you are an analyst and a ton of your money is tied up in Sony Stock, what would you say about MS? If you don't think these companies and individuals have ulterior motives you are deluding yourselves.

The question and the analyst seems weird. If the question "does X360 need Japan to succeed?" the obvious answer is no.

If the question is "Does XBox need Japan to be market leader" the obvious answer is yes.

No wonder how lemmings spin tthe Japan factor, Microsoft is the one who really shows that they are indeed desperate to get significant Japanese market.
