looks to me like there are reports...side note look at that dudes finger nails...

Like any system they all fail eventually, and some times you get lemons, which is much of what the failure reports of 360 slims were lemons, atleast the legitimate reports...we got like a whole slew of fake reports though.

That vid is fake.. he is pushing the button twice to make sure it goes on and off......plus it's not even that guy's video lol

Never buy a used/refurbished XBOX. It will break eventually no matter how well you take care of it.

If I were you i'd get the Slim, free online since you mentioned you don't want to pay for Live. Makes no sense imo to own a 360 and not have XBOX Live.

I can't imagine what i'd do with a 360 and no Live, that's the whole reason I love mine. XBOX Live >>> PSN imo, but without Live, the 360 is pretty much pointless.

I have both conosles, so it isn't a problem for me, but if I had to choose online one for those prices i'd definetly get the Slim. Reliable, able to play online, etc.

I don't own a slim personally, but I do have a 40GB that got the YLOD back at the end of May. Compared to my 360 Elite (Halo/Forza bundle purchased a few weeks before my PS3 died) it was a lot quieter (on my 360 the fans are loud and the disc drive is extremely loud). Mine was never as loud as that video you posted (the video obviously isn't fake though). My guess is that the camcorder's microphone is extremely sensitive not to mention that the guy had the camcorder held very close to the console.

As for the YLOD, I'm sure more Slim YLODs will pop up as time goes on.

[QUOTE="Sonwhy"]

Then it looks like refurbrished 360 at gamestop for $110 with a $20 one year warranty with no live is the best and most reliable option for me. I may even have faith in my 360 after one year to not get another warranty for it seeing as I could get my ps3 fixed by sony at probably an even cheaper price by that point in time.

So $130 to get back in to current gen gaming for a year.

Probably about $70 or $80 or maybe $100 to get ps3 fixed next year. So thats probably $230 at most but if I get my ps3 fixed today its going to cost $150 up front.

I believe that getting a 360 would ensure that I have a reliable console for an extended period of time for the future. Seeing as I will get a one year warranty for it and if it does well for the first year than it should last for awhile. And I can get my ps3 fixed for an even cheaper price next year to be able to play games online again.

Its a very hard decision for me to make between chooing to play online or reliability.

Stevo_the_gamer

Oh goodness no, do not buy a refurbished Xbox 360. Buy it brand new. Seriously. Even then my PS3 isn't representative of every Slim out there. Odds are that you'll definitely get a fine working one. Of course, unless you have bad luck like me where as you get two bad PS3s in a row but that's besides the point.

With a one year warranty i think thats a decent deal. he could just carry it to the store and get a new one whenever something goes wrong.

Tc my 360 20gb finally rrod today, it being manufactured on june 16 2006,It lasted really long i think. I have had 2 ps3s died one to disk error and the 2nd to ylod. Both being 40gbs. The systems rrod/ylod isnt the big problem for me tho. Its teh fact taht i keep losing all my saved stuff when i had to send in my ps3 that pissed me off. up to now i havnt gotten around to playing the ps3 much since my brother bought a slim as i dont feel like going through all those games again(and was so close to getting a platinum on bioshock, just ahd to beat the game on the hardest mode with no vita chambers and i had almost finished when the system died =( )

Personally i would get the 360 slim but id say $130 is a decent price if its a store warranty where you can just exchange it if anything goes wrong

For one, it's still rather early to tell. Secondly, part of the reason that the phat models have been getting ylod's is because Sony used some really cheap and worthless thermal paste on the chips inside... the kind of stuff that is meant to be replaced every two or so years in a desktop that gets regular use. And how many do you know would basically leave their console on 24/7 if they could get away with it? especially those that would use theirs to run the F@H client in particular.

[QUOTE="Tyrant156"][QUOTE="Foliage-King"][QUOTE="Tyrant156"] People need to stop calling it the YLOD cause it implies that it's the same malfunction every time it occurs.

90 percent of the time it is the same prob.

Not everyone sens it to sony. From exp with fixing ps3s and what independent repair shops have said its the same prob 90 percent of the time. Cracked BGAs Actually it's not, people just assume it is and sends it in to be fixed. They probably never know what caused the malfunction just that they got a yellow flashing light.

My Phat 80 GB BC PS3 from 07 is still going strong. I've only seen 1 ylod and it was my friend's who bought his from china town. My nephew has had a slim for a year now and now troubles. Odd that you've seen 6 but then again the PS3 has an unofficial 10% fail rate.

you must be one of those fat ps3 or 360 users...lol

YLOD, yellow light of death.

PS3 Slim doesnt have yellow light on its power button, it wouldnt die as YLOD. Same case as slim 360. They will break, but neither of them will get RROD or YLOD. Those terms are dated...They are for dated 360 and fat PS3. Slim models doesnt need those dated words. We call it broken when it happenes.

Yeah, slim 360 and PS3 slim do break in slight chance, but they are way more superior than their old fat brothers. So does it really matter? no...cuz they are the best choices now.

People need to understand that the yellow light is an indication that the PS3 needs to be serviced, like a check engine light for a car. It doesn't mean every PS3 that gets the yellow light is suffereing from the same malfunctions. You should look online to try and figure out which case is yours bacuse some can be fixed by just replacing parts, like the built in power adaptor.

Tyrant156

Not trying to argue, but when a car needs servicing, it doesnt leave you on the middle of nowhere like the ps3 does.....the car at least says "check engine" or stuff like that.

When my xbox had rrod I was mad, but when my ps3 f up I was like sad, as someone I read a long time ago when my first xbox360 rrod on me...

A RROD or YLOD, is like a cheating girlfriend, you can try to "fix" her of you may dump her, but you will always be afraid of the next one doing the same thing again.......

And its true....you will just always be waiting for it to happen lol.....good day.

Now that the ps3 slim has been out for awhile, I figured I would ask about it.

Nope I haven't gotten one. I know the DVD player is a bit loud though

Do you by chance happen to play the ps3 hard core like? Do you ever play it for 6 or 8 hours from time to time? I used to play my ps3 for 4 or more hours on occasion and I think that had something to do with my ps3 getting ylod.

I use mine for 4-5 hours at a time some days, it has not gotten YLOD however the air coming out the back is SO HOT it makes the shelf creek because its expanding slightly from the heat. One of the major design flaws I've noticed is that the 'optical jack' is too close to the exaust vent. I swap that cable between my 360 and my PS3 (due to a lack of jacks on my audio system) and after playing the PS3 for an hour, it makes that cable too hot to touch. Otherwise, I think there's youtube videos of slims getting YLOD but mine's been good so far. I have had it freeze a few times however.

I just checked the serial numbers on the back of my ps3 with the ones that the lady at sony told me about. I don't think I can even trade in my ps3 any more. The serial numbers don't match with the ones she told me that they would take. I have 20 gig ps3.

I called sony about a day or two ago and asked a lady about trading in a broken fat ps3 for a slim one.

Sony may not even be willing to fix my ps3 any more and may have changed the terms of the contract. Xbox 360 maybe my only option till ps3 drops to $200 retail price.

There will obviously be some YLOD on the slims but its almost too small to count... probably 2 or 3 in every 1000 consoles or less.

Now that the ps3 slim has been out for awhile, I figured I would ask about it.

My fat ps3 got ylod and I was thinking of doing that deal where you can trade it in for a refurbrished slim but I'm skeptical about the slim getting YLOD on me. I am also, thinking about just getting a refurbrished 360 at gamestop and getting a years worth or warranty and then after my first year with the 360 getting another year after that.

I am also taking into account the prices for each path. If I go ps3 slim then its $150 with a 3 month warranty but if I go 360 then its $110 with $20 for 1 year warranty. The only thing is if I get the xbox 360, I will not get Live. So no online play with the 360.

Then again, I am predicting a ps3 price drop for next year so it would probably be cheap to get it fixed by sony come next year after they lower the price of the retail ps3.

Sonwhy

Well, most people who reported getting YLOD on their fat/60GB PS3s did so after a few years of owning them. If that's the case, then you might not see YLODs for slims until a while later. Then again, it's a completely new PS3 with a different, smaller design, so it's hard to say whether it's more or less prone to YLOD. All I can say by personal experience is that mine froze a ton of times in the beginning, with some of it being understandable or my fault. At other times, it was only on for a few minutes and then crashed out of nowhere. Then I would just turn it off through the power button( with the 3 beeping sounds you get indicating that it overheated). I never had to unplug the power cord like I've heard some people did when it happened to them. It hasn't frozen up in a long time, except once for a reason I don't remember right now. The fan is on a lot of the time and it does get pretty hot in a relatively short amount of time, which is understandable as the power brick is on the inside and it's a smaller console.

Nice bump, metzenlord...

It hasn't happened to me, and I accidently left it on for three days. I went on the road for work, and when I came back I noticed I had left it on. Scared the crap out of me. It wasn't playing anything though, it was just in the startup area.

Tried re baking technique on my ps3 fat and it worked for about an hour, then went to play again the next day and got YLOD again. Researched internet from all angles and conclude that all PS3 fats will get YLOD at some point. Re-baking, re-balling, fluxing, DIY, at some point its gonna fail. I did see PS3 slims on Youtube that also got the YLOD. Sony needs to go back to the drawing board and come up with a better solution that is permanent. I possess two old consoles n64 and ps2 and neither are the big pain my PS3 has been. If they expect people to fork out that kind of cash they need to fix this problem. Consumer should not be expected to DIY their system time and time again. Or be expected to get it Fixed when its a well known problem with the system. I say Buyer Beware...

my PS3 slim died after a couple months, whenever i turned it on it would just turn straight back off (before powering on properly). Though i did get a free replacement. But its an electronic device, its not going to be invincible.

My den has a portable A/C which blows cool air directly towards my desk and keeps the air temperatures rather chilly. Would that limit the chances of YLOD for mine? I have a fat 160gb PS3.

All of my friends with PS3's had YLOD including the slim owners, however the slim owners didnt get it as many times but they are new PS3 owners... YLOD is near RROD atm maybe more but it isn't as high as the RROD during the beggining of the 360 which while inflated a little was relatively high. I know my 360 has not RROD yet so do not let hardware decide look at games. Imo though you would be better with a 360 if multiplats interest you as both have good exclusives but 360 multiplats are betterBanjo_Kongfooie

90 percent of the time it is the same prob.

Actually it's not, people just assume it is and sends it in to be fixed. They probably never know what caused the malfunction just that they got a yellow flashing light.

In regards to the PS3 FATs actually it is the same common problem people are having. Due to the lead-free solder that keeps cracking up due to hot and cold conditions over time which cause the cpu/gpu to disconnect from the motherboard.

The YLOD itself might be a general hardware failure but that doesn't mean there isn't a common cause to it thats effecting possibly every FAT PS3 in existance. I'd be surprised at this point if there is a FAT PS3 out there that hasn't YLOD due to the common cause. Whats worse is theres no way to truly permanently fix it outside a highly detailed complex job called reballing of the solder which replaces the lead-free solder with strong leaded solder. The only fix Sony actually do is heat up the motherboard in order to melt the lead-free solder back into place which inevitably causes the cycle to happen again over time which is why people don't bother sending it to Sony. They just apply a hair dryer or heat gun to it and that fix could have it lasting in the range of a couple hours to a few months, sometimes a few years if done right. It'll still YLOD again.

It's hilarious watching cows avoid this issue with the YLOD when it comes to RROD debates. Because to be quite frank, YLOD is a huge issue but maybe not as worse as the RROD. It just takes a lot more time to happen than the RROD. Slims on the other hand, they're far less likely to YLOD... They might even be immune to the common cause. That remains to be seen actually.

I've had 8 PS3 slims get the YLOD. PS3 sucks. RROD was a lie. It never happened.

looks to me like there are reports...side note look at that dudes finger nails...

Like any system they all fail eventually, and some times you get lemons, which is much of what the failure reports of 360 slims were lemons, atleast the legitimate reports...we got like a whole slew of fake reports though.

Oh you so pathetic, why the hell is the idiot on the video pressing the power button twice and whats the deal with his nails ?!? And if he bought it "just a couple days ago, why not return it to get a brand new ?!? There can always be a faulty model !!! My ps3 slim is 2 years old and is going strong !!!

Now that the ps3 slim has been out for awhile, I figured I would ask about it.

YLOD is very rare, even more rare in the slim models (the model I have). I have not had any YLOD, nor am I afraid too. It's not like RROD on the 360, which was almost guranteed to happen, which is one of the big reasons why I switched to PS3.

The slims are a good choice, I also hear Sony is coming out with a new slim model that is even cheaper and smaller. Transfering memory is easy, you just put in a flash drive and copy the game data to it and then put it in the new PS3 and upload it. Though if you have the YLOD you may not be able to do that.
