They affect gamers becuz if their systemisnt selling well than the system gets no games there for the system if histoty. When game dosent sale well, than ther might not be a sequel. So it affects gamers.

Nintendo lost 3rd party support after the SNES.

I don't have the articles/ dev comments, but apparently Nintendo is a **** to work with.

The system with the best sales is likely to get the best developer support, which means more good games. So yes, sales do affect gamers.

When a game sells so bad the companies get closed down. Just like Vampire: Bloodlines closed down Trokia.

However when a game sells really good the company and the series have life in them. Just look how Sin & Punishment originally bombed horridly on the N64 however sold miraculously on the Virtual Console thus resulted Treasure in making a sequel and confirming to bring it to North America immediately.

The Wii is the best selling but it's a console which has to have certian types of games. The 360/PS3 is another market for the developers. They can't do what they did last gen and just make the same game for all 3 systems playing exactly the same. So from this the wii can sell as much as it wants...it's not gonna take away development support from the 360/PS3 because the designers want to make a game for a powerful system not a crappy one. same goes for developers wanting to make something cheap as opposed to expensive(Wii--->360/ps3).

Now lets say Wii game sales are great and 360/PS3 game sales are rubbish...then we have a problem..eveyone starts making crappy looking games...but 360 software sales are fantastic this gen...so the good games will keep on rolling.

Sales are important but not that much in the context of an individual gamer. N64 didn't sell anywhere near PS1 but it sure as hell had a generation worht of amazing titles. Something the Wii will never have.

It affects the 3rd party support.

The Wii is kind of an exception, it has strong hardware sales, but very low software sales. I think people are still trying to figure how what kind of games the Wii demographic are buying.

What? The Wii has a crazy attach rate and sells more software then the 360.

If a company's sales are so bad that it closes down and stops making games I like, then yeah I'm affected. Other than that, I don't think sales have any effect on me.
