I just played this game for four hours and, wow, I am stunned. It feels like a game from the future. It is dynamic in the sense that the characters respond to minor details, like me taking my clothes off ("At least put a rag on or something"), and there are people realistically walking around doing something, sometimes bandits. There are also a lot of unique situations, which characters all have different responses to.

The world is so big with varied terrain and vast lore. I looked at the map, and I wonder just how long it would take to walk around the whole thing. Without one, you might never find your way back. You can listen in on conversations to ongoing events, and it changes every time.

I'm surprised, really. How long can this game stay amazing for? Does it run dry eventually with the same little instances, or are there really this many unique instances and aspects of the game?

But the combat feels like it's form the 1990s. I'm arching instead of meleeing right now, which is better, but it still pretty much consists of me awkwardly running a couple feet back and firing some pot-shots.

Just how truly amazing is this game? Please share your criticism. I can't imagine how much work it must've taken to make a game like this.

They did that walking around naked thing in Morrowind, that's nothing new.

Elder Scrolls games are great in general as they place more focus on the player than a fictional character

I think it's a great game and gets better the deeper you dive. The only thing that does annoy me though is that they need a bit more variety in dungeon design. Many repeated textures etc.

If they make two more games in the series,NOT counting TES Online,i may consider it.

But yes,if you are too far,and are used to it,it may stop being impressive to some.

Its a great game with and without mods. Don't expect a game with much depth though on a few notable things.

Skyrim is the kind of game where if you went through one dwemer ruin, you've been through them all. Most of the quests are fruitless and usually a waste of time aside from guild quests. Basically its an addictive timewaster with a couple novel moments in what can be a fairly devoid overworld.

At least it's not nearly as bad as fallout 3 in that department.

Yes it gets old fast, only mods can give it more legs but even at that it's incredibly shallow to play after a while. Still has one of the best environments in any game though, just a pity what the world is filled with is pretty dull

Really? Skyrim really isn't that remarkable in those regards, especially when you look back at games over the past decade - from Deus Ex to even Morrowind and STALKER. Personally I like the world stuff, my biggest problem is that the story-content largely has the depth of a wading pool, with some absolutely horrendous writing, and the combat that I've experienced (melee and magic) is terribly dull. In one regard it feels like a big step forwards from Oblivion - the setting, the details, in the other it feels just as bad. Anyway, Fallout New Vegas is the counterpoint to it.

This much is true, however I take Skyrim more as an action-adventure than an RPG. It feels a lot more like the former, anyway.

Drasonak

It gets old.

You'll start to notice that NPC aren't that dynamic as you thought. Little childs wandering at 3 am on a rainy day. Or a Khajick merchant that never seems to move or sleep.

You'll grow so tired and old of hearing the same dialogue lines that NPC say, that you'll start finishing their sentences in your head (Like that famous "Took a arrow to the knee")

You'll start to notice how empty the world really is, and how the little things that happen in between dungeons are repeated forever. Like rescuing the same nord from a bunch of imperials, or watching how some mages fight. Random bear attack. Pack of wolves, etc.

Skyrim has its moments, but you have to be willing to accept deal with someinconsistencies

The things that impressed me about Skyrim from the very start were its beautiful, beautiful world, exploring caves and dungeons and all that s***, and the music while you were doing so.

None of the quests were much memorable, save for that Hangover one, which was funny in that 'haha pop culture reference /haha' sort of way. The rest, at least without the mods, was meh. Character models were improved and less uncanny valley-ish, but the interactions were still weird as f***.

Yeah, what was impressive, still is and overall I'd say it was a great game.

It wears off somewhat, as it's inevitable what impresses you so much now will be taken for granted further on. Still, the game has enough unique locales and some great rare events/characters that I never grew bored in the ~100 hours I spent in game. Can't say I've felt much of an urge to return, however.

At one point you said Skyrim was one of the best looking games around because of it's sheer scale and how much it tried to do.

I spent about 90 hours on this game last year.

While the big open world is impressive, there's really no incentive to keep playing once you've done/seen everything that there is do and see. The writing, for one, is so flat that the only reason you do the quests is to get rewards, not necessarily to progress the story. Melee combat is less "meaty" than I like.

Mods can keep things fresh, to an extent.

It got old within the first 2 hours for me. The first time I saw the dragons I was impressed but then you quickly realize this is just another elder scrolls game with cruddy gameplay.

It's an Ocean with the depth of a puddle.

Fallout 3, FO;NV, and Skyrim are 3 of the best games of this gen, alongside Demons Souls and Deus Ex. Those five games alone make gaming a worthwhile hobby IMO...

It did for me, at first it was beautiful, the freedom was exhilirating, and being forced to do small time work and scavenge to survive was great (and would have been better with a New Vegas styled Hardcore Mode).

But now I'm around 80 hours in, I've seen maybe 1/3 of what the game has to offer, and I'm just bored. Too many damn Dwemer dungeons, too many cases where I fight cake enemies for an hour and then fight a super overpowered boss, and too many pointless fetch quests, barriers and poorly thought out puzzles ruining the experience.

I still want to beat it (or at least, the main quests, I just need to finish the Mages Guild and Main Storyline), but right now I think the surprise is lost, and I personally vastly prefer the Fallout series.

New Vegas really is interestingly opposite. It isn't as pretty, the animations aren't as great, the exploration and overall scale and size is incredibly unimpressive (even compared to Fallout 3's Washington DC).

But it does the writing well, the RPG and faction mechanics are deep, it isn't stuffed with pointless fetch quests (or at least, not as much), and I think the end game stuff still holds up well while the combat is much more satisfying (though still clunky compared to other shooters).

For me it wore off. The more you play, the more flaws you find. Plus you eventually will begin to discover how much of the game is basically the same thing over and over again (get quest, go to dungeon, clear dungeon/kill boss/get item at end of dungeon, repeat). There's still more unique and interesting quests and playtime in Skyrim than there is in a lot of games, but there's also a lot of filler. And oh yeah I got tired as hell of dragons interrupting my game. Probably about the 50 hour mark or so was where I started to not be as impressed with it (I played 300+ hours), but I wouldn't say I ever started to dislike it... just that somewhere along the line I stopped thinking it was a great game and started feeling it was just a pretty good one.

If you burn yourself out on sidequests, yeah it does.
