Does either Sony or Nintendo have any single franchise that will match the hype, or anticipation of a Halo entry? I enjoy all the consoles but it just seems like the Halo series is on a whole different level, with the draw, and excitement it creates before release. The only franchise that I think comes close is COD. Now I'm not a big Halo fanatic and I actually enjoy the campaign better than I do the multiplayer, but there's no denying its blockbuster attention, and mass appeal. So what games do you guys/gals think come close when it comes with the hype, or anticipation of a Halo installment?

Lol. Nintendo has so many more that are on an entirely different level than Halo. Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart... The question is, what does Microsoft have that's at that same level?

Halo is way more popular than Zelda. Gears is too now. Nintendo has Mario. That's it.

Eh all those guys sell on long legs(and Zelda never comes close), and don't nearly get the same media attention or that initial 24 hour headline.

He's talking hype. Not just straight up life time sales. Halo's sort of in that GTA/Call of Duty cIass of the industry pays attention. Just not nearly with the same legs.

Smash bros probably does do it. I know the fighting game elitists don't want to hear it, but it's by far the most popular fighter at this point.

They also buy for Yoshi and Bowser. It proves Nintendo survives off Mario alone. Zelda is not as big as fanboys think it is and there's a huge drop off after that. People think cause Nintendo is full of cartoon mascots that every franchise is automatically a household name but they're really not.

Please. People recognize characters like Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Link, Kirby, Fox McCloud, Mario, Luigi, even Samus... They probably don't recognize Roy, or Marth, or Pit, but so many Nintendo games are so well known. My question is, assuming your implication is true... so what? He asked if Nintendo has a franchise that generates the same hype and hysteria. It does, I named it. Your problem seems to be Nintendo lives off Mario alone. Again, assuming that's true, how is that any worse than Microsoft living off Halo alone?

Great game, but it doesn't get near as much attention. When a Halo game is released its like sharks in a feeding frenzy. It's just the Hype that the Halo series creates and I don't think there's a game series out there that is on the same level when it comes to that. Yeah there are a lot of better games, on plenty of different systems, but they don't get the attention, or get the buzz that Halo creates.

Nope. Seriously, I don't. I have that game on my GameCube, but I wouldn't say I was in a rush to get it when it was released.

Not Melee, Brawl. Brawl is the Wii game. Released in 2008. The hype and the hysteria was insane. It was probably one of the most hyped games in history. Probably at least equaled Halo 2/Halo 3, maybe even exceeded that hype in some respects.

if we're talking about market impact, then Nintendo has 2D mario, MarioKart, and Wiisports franchises. They've sold 20, 30, 30 million as non-pack in games

Pikachu and Donkey Kong yes. The rest no. Link is really not iconic at all outside die hard Nintendo fanboys. No non-gamer would know who he is and I know people that think his name is Zelda. Gears is bigger than anything Nintendo has outside Mario. Its a huge franchise that gets tons of coverage in mainstream media and gets debut commercials during BCS championship games and stuff like that. Its not far behind Halo/COD/GTA. Now tell me what Nintendo franchise is really mainstream outside the Nintendo bubble? Would a Zelda commercial ever air during a football game? Doubt it. Even Mario at this point is just selling to kids and soccer moms.

Lifetime sales? Of course not. But the Gears trilogy has outsold the last 3 Zelda games. I said Mario was bigger. Pokemon is only big on handhelds so I don't count them. If you want to bring up Wii Sports I could bring up Kinect Adventures but those are both just pack in games.

Well, I brought up Wii, not Wii Sports. Pokemon is big, so why ignore it? Zelda, I give you. It outsold Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Skyward Sword. But if you want to consider the last three console only releases, as you seem wont to do judging by your Pokemon comment, then Wind Waker and Twilight Princess sold as much as, if not more than, the first two Gears games. You also ignored Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Animal Crossing.

Why you keep bringing up Zelda like it sells? Besides being an underperforming franchise that has done nothing but disappoint a consistent basis, it's not even remotely absurd to think Gears of War out sells it.

Hype and stuff Gears out sells Animal Crossing Pokemon, and probably Mario on initial sales. Like that opening 2 month stretch. It gets outsold because Nintendo games know how to sell months after release.

Nintendo handhelds sell twice as much as consoles so its not really a fair comparison. Notice Animal Crossing only got huge sales on DS and didn't sell that much on Wii and GC. I just count Mario Kart and Smash along with Mario games cause anything with Mario sells like hotcakes. Also I was talking about the last 3 Zelda games on consoles. Gears trilogy is at 20 mil lifetime sales if I remember correctly. No way the last 3 Zelda games sold that much.

[QUOTE="jg4xchamp"][QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="jg4xchamp"] Why you keep bringing up Zelda like it sells? Besides being an underperforming franchise that has done nothing but disappoint a consistent basis, it's not even remotely absurd to think Gears of War out sells it.

You're right, it's just habit. That still leaves... six other franchises?

Hype and stuff Gears out sells Animal Crossing Pokemon, and probably Mario on initial sales. Like that opening 2 month stretch. It gets outsold because Nintendo games know how to sell months after release.

We're having an overall sales discussion. There is absolutely no way Gears outsells ANY of the remaining six franchises when it comes to overall sales

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="JohnnyCageMK"][QUOTE="charizard1605"] Please.

Gears is bigger than a Nintendo franchise? Now I've seen everything

Well Gears 3 did sell 3 million in 5 days! That's a lot of attention and it still isnt as popular as the Halo series. Not yet at least. It's gaining ground though.

[QUOTE="JohnnyCageMK"][QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="JohnnyCageMK"] Lifetime sales?

Wind Waker was 6 million, I believe, Twilight Princess was at ~9 million. Skyward Sword bombed. You're right about Animal Crossing. I still think handheld sales should be counted. Mario Kart and Smash aren't Mario though, not y a long shot. Especially not Smash.

3 million in five days is excellent. Problem is, that's nothing on Nintendo game sales.

Halo is big, but not as big as Zelda. NO games will be as hyped as Nintendos first HD entries in the Mario, Zelda, and Metroid universe.

Not really. MS did an awesome thing marketing wise with Halo. Sony really should take some notes, because some games are the same (or better?) quality than Halo.

I don't think Wind Waker sold 6 mil but either way its not as much as Gears. And when you consider Gears started the gen as a new IP on a console with a smaller install base that should tell you its more popular.

It's kind of hard to separate the two , between sales and hype that is. There are probably some other franchises that had one of their installments outsell a Halo release, but it's the rapid attention that the Halo series gets. It moves so many units within the first few months of release, not to mention its everywhere leading up to launch. You see it on Mt Dew bottles, major sporting events, promotions, etc..

Sales don't matter here. Look, I like Halo, but new Zelda games are just everywhere--you see those games on the morning news. Halo is actually less popular now because of COD.

Initial sales are a reference for hype, the topic we are discussing right now. And yes, CoD games have more hype (and initial sales) than Halo. Only thing it matches is GTA games (and maybe some Blizzard game)

Halo gets commercials during the Super Bowl. Zelda gets advertised on cartoon network during the day time.

I agree. If we're talking currently, then Halo is bigger than Zelda, as far as hype, or commercial attention.Every Halo series has sold extremely well. I'm not so sure Zelda can say the same? Correct me if I'm wrong.

That's odd. I don't recall seeing a single Twilight Princess commercial, or know anyone else that has the game? I have it and I like it, but it doesn't seem like it gets the same attention that a Halo installment does.

Honestly if it wasn't for Ocarina of Time Nintendo would have benched the Zelda series for awhile.

Commercials aren't hype--that's paid advertising. Hype is when word gets around that something big is happening, and people get excited. To my recollection, I don't think I've ever seen an ad on tv for a Zelda game, save for Ocarina 3D. Zelda is so big and entrenched in our society that it doesn't even need advertising to do well financially.
