Do these corporations own those formats, or are they just part of a bigger picture? My brother refuses to buy any blu ray discs because he thinks it would be supporting Sony, specifically.Videodogg
I don't think Sony created Blu-Ray, I think it was another company. Sony is just marketing it the product. M$ definitely didn't create HD-DVD. I'm sure someone will chime in with all the right answers and some links.

We own a ps3. We own everything. But he wont buy the games or any movies for ps3....he will only buy hd-dvds and 360 games.

Sony makes money off of blu-ray sales. Microsoft does not make money off of HD-DVD sales.Ninja-Vox
Yep - this is the main difference. Sony has an enormous potential income in the future if blu-ray becomes a major hit. If HD-DVD fails or succeeds has no impact on Microsoft whatsoever.
If Sony didn't have an economic interest in blu-ray they would no doubt have dropped it from the PS3 and launched a lot earlier - and more important: at a much lower price.
