Sony/Microsoft could easily offer a 4X leap in horsepower for $399.99 for a late 2016 or 2017 release. That could make a big difference in terms of performance in 1080p.

I doubt that.

Or

PS4 = 1080p 30fps

PS4.5 = 1080p 60fps with additional graphical effects.

Oh good, now owners of the .5 current gen consoles will get a better gameplay experience.

It'll probably be a break-even situation for Sony in the first couple months, but they will hit profit within a year.

"Oh good, now owners of the .5 current gen consoles will get a better gameplay experience."

Well, yeah that's kind of the point in releasing more powerful boxes.

That way it will be a burn to their current fans who shelled out for a console already. That's like saying 'if you want the newest gaming experiences keep shelling out top dollar for the hardware'. It's a seriously dumb move. They have to keep gameplay parity across their platforms unless they want to start alienating people.

Plus once they start improving gameplay depending on hardware, it's no longer a .5 generation console, it's a next generation console.

Do current PS4 owners feel burned when the same multiplats run better on PC? Do people with IPAD Air 1's feel burned that other people get a slightly superior experience with the IPAD Air 2 and new IPAD Pro? Nobody is going to feel burned as long as the PS4.5 doesn't get exclusive software.

The iPads don't rely on games the same way, they're about apps. Most of which are not always demanding.

PC is not a console, people do not want to buy a new console to support the latest games for few new features months or less than a couple years within life span of their new or newish console.

The fact is that Dev's will have to design around the lowest common denominator if they plan on making same game for both versions of the consoles. if the next set of consoles were to get true 1080p/60 fps or 4k/30 fps readiness its more than a gpu upgrade especially for 4k, it would be the whole thing, more memory and much stronger cpu+gpu will be required for 4k. This would put the devs in a situation of limiting what they can do because the 1st version isnt able to do the same thing as the 2nd version. So what will happen is that they will phase out the old version after the first year or not support it at all.

Lol it's Sega Genesis all over again. Bad idea for Sony and Microsoft. Many early adopters will be pitchfork in hand Mad.

This is not the Genesis all over again. These consoles are PCs. For the first time in history, all consoles, and PC will use the same architecture and similar graphic APIs. The same games will scale to work on both version of the platforms.

we still know not a jot about the NX (stupid question time...has nintendo actually confirmed its a console? its not a handheld? or a toaster? or a pot of tea?).

who is to say that this PS4.5 stuff isn't coming to light because this more rapid release model is exactly what nintendo are planning and MS and sony got wind of it? hell they're the only one bats&*t crazy enough to actually do it with no heads up. or maybe they are planning multiple NX devices at different power and price points for launch. one of those models gives the PS4 and X1 a bit of a thrashing and those 2 want to even it up again...maybe.

it's unlikely but nintendo are impossible to predict.

finally if the wiiu was ever going to be a massive hit...it wasnt going to be on horsepower. people didnt buy the PS2 or 1 or wii for the power and they are not buying the PS4 for the power. the PS4 just offers the best value at the moment.

True. It's a middle finger to the current gen owners who spent loads at the beginning of the gen and are waiting for these things to take off. Now we find out even MS and Sony aren't happy with their silly ass contraptions and want to replace it with something better.

I'm definitely jumping ship to the NX and staying with PC now. Console fans who want to keep buying new expensive consoles every two or three years can have at it. That's not what consoles are about.

Consoles typically offer better cost/value then PC at launch. That is literally the ONLY time that consoles actually do that, usually after a few years it shifts back to PC (and by the end of the gen, the PC usually has the advantage by miles).

So if they "refresh" the console mid-lifespan to still be able to bump up the settings, it actually might restore the price/value advantage back to the console - especially if they retain or start adding in more backwards compatibility (which obviously PC always wins at).

I honestly see no way that a mid cycle update can be construed as a bad thing, at least so long as it is "optional" and no games actually require it. Most people that "early adopt" will replace their machine at least once or twice anyway. I know I would welcome the idea of an IMPROVED PS4 (rather than just the inevitable slim model). I find it pretty funny there are some Nintendo fans in here criticizing the idea of PS4.5 or XB1.5, when they are all for the "new" 3DS - which is basically the same idea.

Of course we don't really know if the PS4.5 or XB1.5 are an actual thing, at least as far as having much stronger hardware. I think it's a somewhat safe assumption there will be revised hardware of somekind, whether it's a "slim" model or "more power" remains to be seen.

Nintendo has an indentity.

Sony sort of has one. Xbox is a PC that ran into the wall. Waste of time.

I have to say I seriously doubt it. The console is coming out this year and there is no info. Add to the fact that the nx faces the almighty ps4 and a strong x1 it don't look good. Lastly how many wii pew owners will invest in a nintendo console after this cluster ****.

I think NX will do fine regardless of upgraded Xbox One and PS4. They'll pump out their exclusives and if rumors are true, get third party support. Nintendo pretty much is like cartoon character Droopy, just can't be stopped.

Raster graphics are scalable workloads i.e. for screen space shader effects, more pixels = more shader power required = more memory bandwidth.

Framebuffer with matrix of pixels are inherently parallel workloads.

The problem with scaling between lesser hardware and higher grade hardware is with the CPU which affects game play and simulation modeling.

If Wii U has 7 Jaguar cores, it would be easy to supported XBO/PS4 game ports with scaled down graphics effects. I run XBO/PS4 ported games on my 13 inch ultrabook with Intel Core i5 Ivybridge ULV with Radeon HD 8570M (6 CU, 64bit GDDR5) with reduce graphics details but the game play and simulation modeling remains the same. For Wii U, the programmer has to re-factor the game play and simulation modeling to fit into PPC X3 at 1.2Ghz.

GCN optimisations are applicable for 6 CU GPU to 64 CU GPU or future XX CU GPU.

If I were a PS4 or X1 owner and a half-step upgrade were released, I'd feel miffed. I don't think I would be rushing out to return my relatively new console. By releasing an upgrade, they're running the risk of fracturing the userbase. I don't think it would harm the NX's chances of success. Especially if it is on par with the .5 systems.

Yeah I guess Nintendo's biggest threat is themselves if we use the Wii U as an example. Its gonna shock a lot of fans when Nintendo finally gets out of the hardware business once the the NX flops.

Best work yet? Did you never own an SNES, N64 or Gamecube? The Wii U doesn't have the best iteration of any Nintendo franchise. The only exception would be Splatoon, but that doesn't count as the franchise just started. I'm willing to bet any Splatoon sequel will be superior.

So you didn't. Well of course you would think the Wii U was the best Nintendo console if you never experienced past systems.

Kinda hard to detect sarcasm over the internet. So I will be blunt. Nintendo fucked up and only a fool would expect them to offer anything matching the ps4/x1. Add in the fact that this holiday will be the strongest game wise and the price drops.....Nintendo is ice skating uphill.

Nah tropical freeze is better.

You could argue galaxy 2 is more varied and you'd be right, but it's also easy peezy for starters, tropical freeze is challenging. 3d world vs galaxy 2? Oh yeah galaxy 2 is much better. I would not say galaxy is near their best work tbh, though it's very good. Galaxy 2 is great.

From a series vs. series perspective, Mario kart 8 is the best one they've made, So's DK and I would even argue the case for Wooly world vs Yoshi's island. Smash is way better than brawl at least.

Their Wii U output can't come close to the gamecube's but it's not been bad.

Exactly, consoles aren't about this. Once I get a console, I want to be safe in knowledge I'm good for the rest of the gen.

And that is exactly what I said, they would only alienate people if they start changing gameplay depending on your console. And if they do start phasing it out, that's a low blow and pretty disrespectful to people who spent their hard earned cash on the hardware.
