In some ways it is. The CPU is more powerful but the GPU lack pixel and vertex shaders 1.1. Overall I would say it would be able to produce better visuals because of the faster CPU and extra RAM.

The Wii is nothing but Cube 1.5. Only fanboys say otherwise. That does not mean great graphics are not possible. Look at RE4 or NG. Both are better than anything currently out on the PS3. But that does not make the Wii strong at all.

Wii GRAPHICS MYTHS DEBUNKED!
So, as we know there has been a lot of talk about Wii's graphics, the competition, the previous generation e.t.c and there have been a lot of myths too, I got a little fed up so I decided to debunk them.



1. "Wii can't do Normal Mapping."

- Oh yes it can! Really, Who actually said it couldn't? That's something I've always wondered. The Xbox did normal-mapping to great effect in games like Doom 3 & Splinter Cell: CT, and the Wii's programmable TEV (Texture Environment Engine) can do any effect XGPU could so why shouldn't it be able to? More proof?


Digital-Legends proved that even the N-Gage! which didn't even have a 3d accelerator chip let alone shaders or h/w bump mapping did normal-mapping too.




and so can the Nokia N93's *Dreamcast* based PowerVR MBX graphics chip.

Furthermore, Konami will use Normal-mapping technology in Dewy's adventure for Wii and Factor 5 have already expressed their displeasure of developers not using normal-maps on the system.

2. "Even though the Wii's ATI Hollywood GPU has a higher clock speed than the Xbox's XGPU, it still isn't capable of as many pixel fillrate calculations. Wii isn't capable of pixel shading. Nor is it capable of graphical effects such as stencil shadows, self-shadowing and light scattering".



This is wrong. The 'shaderama' that was Rogue Squadron II did these effects on Gamecube back in 2001, light scattering was an excellent addition in Rebel Strike in 2003.

The ATI Hollywood can actually produce "insane fillrates" to use Factor 5's words. The XGPU had a pixel fill-rate of 932 m/pixels. Hollywood is capable of a pixel fill-rate of almost 2 G/pixels. Having such a high fill-rate capability means that the Wii can perform advanced shaders, advanced texture filtering and advanced multi-layer texture effects without much hassle, especially as it only has to produce graphics @ 480p.

3. "Wii is hardly anymore powerful than the Gamecube. In fact its not much more capable than the PS2."

Don't make assumptions by what early Wii games display.

Wii has both more graphical power and processing power than the previous generation of consoles. In terms of processing calculations, did you know? IBM Broadway >> GC Gekko + XB Celeron put together!?

4. "The Wii cant produce anything near photo-realistic visuals."

Who said photo-realism meant that graphics have to look EXACTLY like real-life? Besides Gran Turismo 4 on PS2 (a much much lesser system) did a fine job of re-creating near-photo-realistic cars.



5. "The Wii is incapable of good physics."

Wait til they switch the Vacuum Laser on, physics allover the place.

All those interactions at once? Wii was having a picnic, hardly touched Hollywood for graphics functions too. Broadway used a fraction of the CPU to compute those physics. The system is capable of even more. Btw, AGEIA Physics are already in use for current & future Wii titles.

6. "The controller interactions require huge amounts of processing power, that's holding back Wii graphics."

Incorrect. It doesn't have a performance hit. If it did this (below) wouldn't run in 60 frames per second with so many advanced effects.

The CPU is slower, but better designed. The GPU is superior. It has shaders.

But developers put crap from the ir ass on the Wii Look at it, no wii games have yet to compete against XBOX 1 graphics yet. Riddick, Halo 2, it's disgraceful. i think developers think that Wii has no great games and they can release crap and it will sell IE: Ubisof

Now that I'll agree with. Wii defiantly has the potential...though it seems like few are putting it to use.

The Wii is superior to the Xbox in every way. The CPU may be slightly slower, but the Xbox's CPU is crippled by a small cache and FSB. The architecture of the IBM PowerPC found in the Wii is far better. The Wii is better than the Xbox in every possible way. This of course, begs the question: Why don't the games look better? The answer to that, of course, is easily explained: 1. All of the current Wii games were made on modified Gamecube development kits and then ported to Wii. Sonic is the first game made from the ground up for Wii. 2. Nintendo wasn't stressing graphics at launch. Without Nintendo pressuring them, the developers didn't worry about graphics, but instead rushed as many game to launch as possible. They saw the potential selling power of the Wii, and decided to make a quick buck.

Now that I'll agree with. Wii defiantly has the potential...though it seems like few are putting it to use.

The new Sonic game is one of the few games using the Wii's power from the ground up, which I respect. :)

I heard that from developers not from anyone on a games forums. Also that site you linked me too didn't even mention what I was talking about. The Wii is my favorite console so don't even try to call me a fanboy and I'm not even a big fan of the graphics capability I was talking about because can make games look too shiny if not used well. Look at some early games that were optimised for the GF3 and 8500 to see what I'm talking about.

Sorry sheep. Even Miaymoto said the Wii is basically a Gamecube. If the Wii is so superior to the GC/Xbox then why is it not showing? Dont give my but Super Mario Galaxy looks great because it can be done on GC. All they did was make balls of planets and a black sky with stars, so they can put all the detail on Mario and the environment. Prime 3 looks like its predecessors. If SSB came out at the end of the GC's lifetime it could clearly do Brawl graphics.

Now sheep stop making graphics/techinal specs because yall said you dont care for these things and that gameplay only matters. Such hypocrites.

I trust Miaymoto more than you. He said the Wii is basically a GC. He worked on developing the system, not you. I cant belive you said the Xbox techinal specs are pathetic when it was really good for the era it is in. The Wii's specs are horribe for this generation and it has done nothing to prove that it has better graphics than last-gen consoles.

I trust Miaymoto more than you. He said the Wii is basically a GC. He worked on developing the system, not you. I cant belive you said the Xbox techinal specs are pathetic when it was really good for the era it is in. The Wii's specs are horribe for this generation and it has done nothing to prove that it has better graphics than last-gen consoles.

I said the Xbox CPU is pathetic in terms of architecture, which it is. The Wii's specs are right in from of your face, with a link and everything. The Wii is superior to the Xbox, which is what this entire argument is about. I am not comparing it to the PS3 of the Xbox 360.

I didn't say anything about specs, I explained why all of the current Wii games are lackluster at best. I explained why the games are not using the potential.

Fanboys just go look at all my meghertz and megbytes and dont understand anything about the underlyings that affect how the the machine actually works. For a start the xbox uses a chip similar to a celeron, any PC enthusiast knows cellerons are utterly rubish for games. saying a 700 mhz Celeron = 700 Broadway is like saying 2.2 Ghz celeron = 2.2Ghz 64 Bit athlon.

But developers put crap from the ir ass on the Wii Look at it, no wii games have yet to compete against XBOX 1 graphics yet. Riddick, Halo 2, it's disgraceful. i think developers think that Wii has no great games and they can release crap and it will sell IE: UbisofGuess_With_ReX

I said that in one of my other threads today and got flamed hard....but so far this is true.  Wii has the capability of better graphics than Gamecube, PS2, Xbox, but developers haven't taken advantage of it yet.  Super Mario Galaxy will hopefully show the true graphical power of Wii.  But I'm still concerned about how much effort 3rd parties will use for the graphical aspects of Wii...

In some ways it is. The CPU is more powerful but the GPU lack pixel and vertex shaders 1.1. Overall I would say it would be able to produce better visuals because of the faster CPU and extra RAM. Sir_Graham
Wrong. Shaders are critical in producing realistic shadows and normal maps. The Wii will never have games that look as good as Xbox 1 games. 2 cases in point are Far Cry and Splinter Cell. If the Wii was as powerful as Xbox 1, Far Cry and Splinter Cell on Wii would look much better.

Just like he said DS is not capable of N64 graphics, Yet the DS desing tracks for Mario Kart DS have 3 time the detail the N64 Tracks do.

What does it matter if he says it is basically a Gamecube? The specs obviously suggest that it is more powerful than Xbox, and it says right in the article that the Wii is more capable than the Gamecube.
