Doom 3 just wasn't Doom. Doom is meant to be frantic, overwhelming. I've played Doom 3 after the fact and I just can't warm to it at all. It doesn't feel like the originals we all fell for all those years ago. It feels like a different genre never mind a different series.
Doom 4 is much more focussed.
Doom 3 is not a bad game. But DOOM is one of the ten best games released this generation. Kudos to id tech and Bethesda for having the balls to scrap what they were making and take it back to basics.
I hope the new Doom sets an example and we get the quakes, unreals, and more dooms back.
Doom 3 is a very underrated title judged on being different rather than on it's own merits.
- Both Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space throw a bunch of monsters in a tight space, Dead Space uses jump scares even more and both Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space have less enemy variety.
- Both Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 handle resources poorly, the "survival" aspect is distinctly lacking. Doom 3 on the more difficult setting sucks the players life-force, limits resources and increases damage. In Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space (regardless of setting) the player is overwhelmed with resources.
- Doom 3 lacks a leveling or perk system that in both Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space overpower the player
- Creative enemy designs better than that of Doom 4's
- A visually impressive game that raised the game still looking relatively decent today
Doom 4 on the other hand....
- It's like old fps, but nowhere near as good, just being like it = overpraise
- It has a perk/leveling system that overpowers the player
- Doom 3 gets hammered for jump scares while this redundantly shoves monsters in a room
- Insta kills boring within 20 minutes
- Poor platforming sections
- Hell in Doom 3 is better
- Other things
- e.t.c....
Also this was awesome ^
The new Doom is leaps and bounds ahead of Doom 3.
Doom was never about horror or plot, just shooting the crap out of everything.
I love the new one Doom, but doom 3 was a lot of fun for me. The enviroment was pretty sweet.
I enjoyed Doom 3 a lot too, I could appreciate what they were trying to do. I suppose Doom 3 would be received a whole lot better if they actually name it something else entirely....

LOL I remember that scene.

So Call of Duty is better than most games because it's all about just shooting like Transformers is better than most action movies?
Sad that people has become so casual and noob. Doom 4 has Halo gameplay, easy casual game for noobs.

Yeah, that's cute kid.
Doom 4 does look good, but also casual. Play a real shooter ladies and gentlemen. Play Starfox Zero--best shooter of the gen. Everybody keeps buying these Barbie doll army fps games and virtual walking games. People, these games suck. They are akin to fmv games. Remember fmv sucked.

The new doom is amazing.
Doom 4 (or Doom or Doom reboot or Doom 2016 or whatever you want to call it) is easily the winner for me. For one reason: Doom 4 was actually fun.
I appreciate the attempt at trying to shift the tone of the game with Doom 3. I don't think that switching to a more horror-based/story-based approach was necessarily a bad decision. What made it a bad decision was that id SUCKED at doing the new approach WELL. It was TRYING to be more horror-focused, but it was too predictable and full of cheap garbage scares. It was TRYING to be more story-oriented, but in keeping with the tradition of Doom, the story was utter shit and didn't need more attention drawn to it. I commend the developers for trying to change things up a bit, but what they did new was done sort of poorly, and that ultimately just kind of made the game a chore to play. There were PARTS that I enjoyed, but my overall feeling was just that Doom 3 wasn't that much fun.
By contrast, I feel like Doom 4 changed things up at least as much as Doom 3, but at least Doom 4 was FUN. Doom 4 increased the speed of the game substantially to the point where it really doesn't even play like Doom or Doom 2. Doom 4 is FAR more of a "run or die" shooter than the first 2 Doom games ever were, and the arena nature of the game makes me compare it far more to Shadow Warrior than classic Doom. But it was FUN.

Yep.
For me, Doom 3 had a game ending glitch that didn't allow me to finish the game. There was a door that didn't open later in the game, restarting checkpoint/level didn't do anything.
DOOM on the other hand I just finished my 100% playthrough (my second time through) on Ultra-Violence. Fucking awesome game -- not without fault at all, but when the music kicks in and you're running around the map slaughtering demons...DOOM is phenominal at that.

I guess you never played early Doom/Quake games or any 90s Old School shooters because Doom 4 is based on them. only MP is like Halo (because its made by halo developers) which nobody cares.
Doom 3 was good but Doom 2016 blow it out of water.
So far I love them both. I find Doom 3 extremely underrated. It's an awesome game, despite it not having that fast running and blasting everything in seconds-gameplay. What it did, it did awesomely.
So far DOOM has been awesome as well. The return to fast blast everything in the face-gameplay is very welcome. If you ask me right now, I'd say I prefer Doom 3, since I've played and completed that game many times whereas in DOOM I've just now got my ass to hell. So I'm not very far in that game at all, but what I've played of it so far has been great.
Doom 3 was just a poor man's first-person Resident Evil.
It was still better than resident evil.

Which one?
Hint: If you say all of them, you're wrong.

yes all of them.

Well at least you can admit when you're wrong.
Good man.
Alright, I've made my mind up, I'm getting this damn game. It sounds absolutely fucking glorious.
Do it, man. It's awesome. And from what I've seen, you've got a good taste in games, you should like it. It's filled with secret areas and stuff as well, like the old ones, which I personally love. I can say it's easily one of the best games released this year so far, and I haven't gotten far at all.

Save for a few short iffy sections, it's one of those games that continually gets better all the way to the end. Really good stuff.
Definitely one of my favorites this year and I'm pretty sure it's one of my top 10 of the gen so far.
Edit: There's also some pretty cool stuff coming out of the Snapmap mode. Not a fan of the regular multiplayer though.

Agreed.
This is a fantastic mod btw, fiixes the pea shooter weapons, makes zombies take more damage, speeds up and changes AI behavior and a whole bunch of shit all the while lifting the graphics.
Doom 4, no contest.
Doom 3 was unfortunately made more into a survival horror rather than a run and gun experience. Still a good game but not what we wanted.
As much as people bitched about the flashlight mechanic, I loved it. It created a tension of either seeing or shooting. I'm a big horror fanatic, however, and I like hard games, so that only made it fun.
Doom 4 is probably the better game, overall, but this is mostly coming from a quality standpoint. I enjoyed both games. Except the Doom 4 MP; it sucked.
I loved each about equally when they released. I'd love to play me some Doom 3 now except Bethesda isn't offering it digitally online for consoles, so Doom 4 by default.
Doom 3 is trash.
Doom 3 is worst in series but even then its was still incredible game. best FPS of 2004 behind Half life 2. its still better than most modern AAA shooters.
Its True that new Doom is much better and step in right direction. there has never been a bad Doom game.
I dont even have to play Doom 4 to know that its a better game than Doom 3 but lets not be fucking crazy here,Doom 3 was far from being a bad game,it was actually pretty alright, the biggest problem was that it had the Doom name and with that come certain expectations. It was disapointing sure, but I didnt really mind the basic as **** System Shock wannabe gameplay.
Not a classic but a good game nonetheless. Still, even simply glancing at Doom 4 is enough for me to see its what I want from a Doom game,at least in comparison.
