Really ? Skyrim's appeal is pretty obvious, its big and its detailed, its a fully simulated enviroment that lets players do whatever they want, its the Midieval Matrix. The Ultimate Escapist Paradise !

Ofcourse all that has got nothing to do with gaming, so if your not the super immersionist type then its not for you... It is a below average game, but thats only because..... Actually I'm going to stop right here because thats where people get confused with my theories.

You aren't able to freely switch vocations because you always have to go to the capital to do it. The non magic archery in that game is fucking garbage. If anyone thought it was actually good their opinions on games are forever void. Thats like saying the archery in Dark Souls is good. Like, have you ever played a game with a fun bow?

Yeah, I have, and it's called Dragon's Dogma. lol. I don't understand what's bad about it.

Archery in Dark Souls isn't amazing but it works in the context of the game. You're never really forced to use it and when you do use it, it's usually to cheese certain enemies. On its own it is clunky and slow, but you're never forced to use it in a combat situation in any of the games.

Do whatever you want. LOL.. Like pick flowers, sharpen daggers and rearrange the crap in my virtual house for hours on end ? Yay.

Or do you mean, me imagining all this shit in my head to make up for the games inadequacies ?

Anyway, I can understand it's really more of an immersive simulation type game, as opposed to a true RPG, but at this point they might as well just drop the remaining bullshit RPG elements and just focus more on combat/gameplay, instead of having these awkward, in-between type games, with no true strengths. Truly generic & forgettable stuff.

As some who plat'd the game and spent over 200 hrs on the original and Dark Arisen I can honestly say that Dragon's Dogma is an excellent game even though it was rough around the edges. I didnt care too much about the story until around my second playthrough (noticing things like how the dragons speak to you as if they want you to beat them, and how the dragon's were once arisen's, not to mention beeating the seneschal and becoming 'God'.)The side-quest lines took a little getting used to and no one character was remarkably interesting but everything fit. The graphics were not ground-breaking by any means but the animations and enemy designs were pretty great. Combat was fast & frenetic and challenging up to a certain point.

The pawn system was interesting (though getting pawns to shut up should be an option in the sequel). I spent plenty of hours trying to cultivate my pawn's tendencies so she can be helpful in battle when summoned. Too many times I would come across Pawn's with horrible tendencies for the class they were using.

My only complaints are that I wish they would expand the pawn system a little more, add 2 player coop so another player and his pawn can join you, and make the game world bigger I feel like the original's map was intended to be much bigger than it turned out.

Dark Arisen was excellent, the atmosphere, music, difficulty level, and design were all just excellent. the story behind Bitter Black Isle was pretty interesting too.

Anyone else think it was way too hard? I have Dark Arisen on my PS3 from when it was on PS+ which includes the original Dragon's Dogma, correct? I played for a few hours but just kept getting slaughtered so I gave up. I enjoyed Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur much more.

@bussinrounds

They should only do that if they insist on calling it a game..... This is the part of my explaination I didn't want to get into.

if they simply call it a Sim instead than it deserves all the praise it got. :)

@david61983:

The game can be a bit tough when you're just starting out, but that is where the pawn system comes in handy try to get some pawns that are a bit higher in lvl than you are and send them off into the frontlines of a fight while you sit back and try to take enemies out from a distance, or try changing your class.

Really ? I thought it dragged on for too long.... Even by RPG Standards... But anyway its got Much Much bigger problems than length...

I can agree with that. For instance I thought the Quest system was horrible.

They were definately padding it.... Remember the Fetch Quests from the Ale House notice board ? Those were the worst.

The one thing I dislike is that many enemies, especially in Bitterblack Isle, tend to be damage sponges. I honestly can't find much else at fault with it.

It doesn't need to be bigger, I mean its already full of useless space.

It actually could have been bigger, and I was disappointed when Gran Soren and Cassardis ended up being the only real towns. But the space of the overworld isn't "useless;" you'll have explored basically everything by the time you beat the main quest, and every area has a purpose.

Northwest Gransys = the area before the Greatwall, i.e. Barta Crags, yes? There are lots of powerful monsters in that area and several quests around there. There's also a dungeon entrance near the Greatwall.

I completely get where you're coming from. I love games where it's fun just to take in the scenery and get into the general atmosphere of it but for some reason Skyrim felt really fake and contrived to me. I suppose the fact you can zip around anywhere once you've been to a location doesn't help make the world feel bigger but that's more modern game design disease than the fault of the game itself (pandering to casuals with the attention span of a three year old child).

But I just couldn't get into it all the same. I tried and failed. Fallout New Vegas is pretty much the same type of game but it's better in absolutely every way imaginable IMO. I also resented the fact Skyrim looked really ugly compared to other games on my high end PC till modders got their hands on it. Bethesda really are some lazy mofo's.

I know it sounds like I'm defending Skyrim but I'm actually not.... I never liked it. And yep, Bethesda are terrible developers. Publishing is what they do best.
