As some who plat'd the game and spent over 200 hrs on the original and Dark Arisen I can honestly say that Dragon's Dogma is an excellent game even though it was rough around the edges. I didnt care too much about the story until around my second playthrough (noticing things like how the dragons speak to you as if they want you to beat them, and how the dragon's were once arisen's, not to mention beeating the seneschal and becoming 'God'.)The side-quest lines took a little getting used to and no one character was remarkably interesting but everything fit. The graphics were not ground-breaking by any means but the animations and enemy designs were pretty great. Combat was fast & frenetic and challenging up to a certain point.
The pawn system was interesting (though getting pawns to shut up should be an option in the sequel). I spent plenty of hours trying to cultivate my pawn's tendencies so she can be helpful in battle when summoned. Too many times I would come across Pawn's with horrible tendencies for the class they were using.
My only complaints are that I wish they would expand the pawn system a little more, add 2 player coop so another player and his pawn can join you, and make the game world bigger I feel like the original's map was intended to be much bigger than it turned out.
Dark Arisen was excellent, the atmosphere, music, difficulty level, and design were all just excellent. the story behind Bitter Black Isle was pretty interesting too.
