Looks like 360 may be going to DVD 2.0!

http://playinforkeeps.blogspot.com/2...asonic-to.html

MICROSOFT unites TOSHIBA & PANASONIC to make DVD 2.0

Microsoft & Toshiba resurrection is comin' !

Last month, a working group WG-12 was made for "research and specifications of network applications as well as related networking formats DVD Forum specifications, recommendations for the DVD Forum and other associations for devices connected to the network."

In other words, Toshiba, Microsoft, and Panasonic have united together to create a format DVD 2.0, which will use part of HD functionality, already established for HD DVD. For example, it will support interactive Hdi interface will support Super Upconversionmode, which enable video output in the permits until 960p. Also promised advanced copy protection system and sure, the support of network functions.

And the most important. The new format DVD 2.0 will be compatible with conventional DVD drives! That is, we get HD video with slightly inferior quality Blu-ray, but the conventional DVD devices. All that is needed for a new video format - its updated firmware player and the opportunity to display high-resolution signal.

Ideally under these conditions suited Xbox 360. War is not over formats!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found this on the gametrailers forums. THe rumored size is about 15-20 gigs but don't quote meon that.

This is not intended to kill blu-ray or to be the next market leader. It will improve current DVDs possibly adding extra storage space and making them play in 720p . THIS WILL NOT directly commpete with blu-ray but it will bite it in the butt sales wise.
again supposedly you don't have to buy new DVDs since upscaling DVD players (including the 360 ) will do the job. Keep in mind that this is only a rumor but other sources also reported about this,

The regular consumer might not even know it. They'll just sneak it in for the 360 games.

Weak attempt at trying to compete with Blu-ray. Why can't they just get over that they lost?

It's not competing with blu-ray. People here are impossible. They think it's a bad thing , like a few extra gigs of storage is ever bad...

As long as it's just used for games, I don't see a problem. Especially if it'll be compatible with normal DVD drives.

This response reeks of insecurity. Last time I checked both Panasonic and Toshiba compete against Sony. So they don't have a right to even try?

How much storage space will DVD 2.0 have? I am intrigued because it sounds like you don't have to buy any additional hardware since the format works on conventional DVD drives.

 Toshiba again? They didn't learn? Seriously, Blu-Ray is the next disc until another one comes next generation. Blu-Ray is standard HD disc now. No company is going to back a new disc when Blu-Ray is so much more popular. DVD 2.0? LOL seriously get a better name

Just what retailers want another format. Don't see how this will get any support. What happens to all the DVD owners who can't just upgrade their firmware?? And guess what the vast majority of them can't.

Well, the movie industry has already gone with Blu-Ray, but can they make a switch? Or is it just for games?

What happens to the XBOX360 owners who have a different format? When the new system is released, and games become DVD2, will the old XBOX 360s be obsolete?

Someones scared ...I imagine this will cut into bluray sales because

1) it's cheaper

2) it's also HD ( albeit only 720p ) but you need an upconevertingg DVD player , HD-DVD ( they are like 20 bucks ) or a 360.

3) Supposedly it has extra storage space.

I think it's for games but movies instead of being released on DVDs they will be released on DVD 2.0 .

It has better quality for movies and if you have an upconverter it can render movies up to 920p .

The HD video has to be played on a DVD player with HDMI that goes beyond 480p. My DVD player is 480p max. How will I Get HD video? All I'm saying is that Blu-Ray is taking off, DVD 2.0 is too late.

This would've been amazing 2 years ago. Now though, it can't replace a media format which can do all resolutions.

We don't know how this will be used however; most people are still content to buy DVD's. DVD 2.0 could give DVD a bit more staying power, but all ideas of what Hollywood will do wit htis technology is pure speculation at this point.

But this seems to address the fact that game developers have been asking for more space. Microsoft is simply supplying the need; how can that be bad unless you're completely biased against the Xbox 360?

I've heard this claim of current DVD driving using mythical new format X now about 5 times, not once has it come to anything. Get back to us when MS puts out a firmware update to actual do this, until then it's as much a pipe dream as the other 4.

Seems irrelevant for games. It seems like it will improve the specs for DVD movies instead of being limited to 480p.

Doesn't seem like a change in data density is going to go into effect, so it's worthless for data disks. You can get a 1080p signal out of a data DVD if your reader is fast enough. However, normal DVD players don't need to read data, and thus are hardcoded to run the standard DVD spec. This initiative will only affect DVD players.

My bet is? it wont' make a iota of difference.

Most people WILL switch to blu ray. Why? Because huge companies like Warner Bros, Fox, and MGM are going blu ray only.

If it can run on conventional dvd players and deliver 960p i'd say that's a win. don't know how they would do it though.

This is WEAK.

There is no way the quality will only be slightly less than Blu.

The Functionality is cool, but it's going to take space.

Microsoft doesn't want to lose all their work with HDDVD, so they are just trying to pimp this software at DVD.

Again your hatred for MS blinds you from the fact that this is more a toshiba idea. I mean sure, we should all let Sony do whatever the heck they feel like. That'll be better for us all..

ugh microsoft, stop trying to create vaporware to battle blu-ray. You phailed with our HD-DVD drive and screwed over 400 thousand people and now this? Just get blu-ray or use multiple DVD's. This is basically just like microsoft saying. "We phailed by only using DVD" And Toshiba saying "Yeah, HD-DVD epic phailed"

Just what retailers want another format. Don't see how this will get any support. What happens to all the DVD owners who can't just upgrade their firmware?? And guess what the vast majority of them can't.EmperorSupreme
Jeez, it will be so hard to replace a 39 dollar DVD player. Format am failed.

This is dated March 13th and its on Blogspot. Jamex1987

It amazes me how many people keep missing this, and discussing this as if it had an ounce of actual credibility to it.

So, if this is more than just a rumor, how much will this little endeavor for Microsoft cost?

[QUOTE="Tiefster"]MS just has to attempt to disrupt everything don't they?xsubtownerx

Again your hatred for MS blinds you from the fact that this is more a toshiba idea. I mean sure, we should all let Sony do whatever the heck they feel like. That'll be better for us all..

My blind hatred lead me to buy their OS too right? And a ton of their published games over the years too right? I just don't agree with what they do.

Hey. The way they talked about it even fooled me into believing there was some substance to this rumor.
