It's not about the space on the DVD, it's the lack a standard HDD that will cause troubleO_Lineman17

Amen. Disc space will be a problem for the 360 in a year or so, but it will by no means seriously crippling. The 13gig optional hard drive will do that well enough by itself.

it has nothing do with larger games per se, more levels... but rather advanced graphics, textures, sound will have the benefit from extra disk space + hey, if I am going to pay $60 bucks for a game, I would want more playing time...I hope I did not give an impression of being an xbox 360 hater since I do own one as well. It was great when it came out but it has seen its last run, not due to the hardware, but the limitation ofdvd9.

jofu74

Ya it shows so far considering the PS3 in a year has yet to get a AAA game or game that really gets people all hyped up. Every game that was supposed to be better in sales, better in graphics or any of that garbage that was promised by Sony has yet to get above an 8.5 or even come close in sales of that of gears of war or Halo3. So until that actually happens blu-ray is still not nessasary.

[QUOTE="Redgarl"]Crysis fit on a single DVD9 with 6,2 GIG... that alone is telling everything.AIH_PSP

That's different. PC games are installed so they can be compressed a lot. 360 streams the data and loads straight from the disc, therefore to cut loading times and slow downs you need to have less compression. When you have less compression, the file size is bigger. When the file size is past 8.5GB, then the DVD cannot be used.

What a BUNCH OF LUNATICS.... CRYSIS TAKE 6.69GB on my harddrive!

Also, compression used like Winrar can only compress about 15% of the total size.

Winrar just uses a general LZ scheme. You can get far more compression wish specific and targeted algorithms.

Crysis uses 6.47Gb of HDD space. Not more. I have no idea where PS3 kiddies got this 13gb number.

or it can also be; 2008 - the disappearance of bluray together with the ps3

or perhaps; 2008 - the year where the wii will forever be forgotten

If you played ME you'd know that the 'side-planets', the ones not related to the main quest are all a rehash of the same textures and models. There isn't enough variety of textures and model in the game.

The fact is, blu-ray allows much more variety, sound and video quality, that's a fact. You can make a 'good enough' game with DVD9, but you can make an even better game with blu-ray.

Gamming is multimedia and blu-ray allows better quality media, that a fact doesn't matter how you look at it. But yeah, quality of the media has nothing to do with the quality of the story or fun factor of the game.

And Blacksite Area 51 for PC has 11GB, Flight simulator 2007 has 13GB, etc...

360 is already almost maxed

Mass Effect=6.4GB

360 DVD Size= around 7GB

Assassins Creed sucks because of 360, its inferior dvd made the devs gimp the audio so you hear the same crowdstuff over and over:(

another ignorant statement.

The only reason a developer would need a larger capacity medium is if they put HD cut scenes in their games (Blue Dragon). Since most games use the in-game engine to do cut scenes it can use the same textures its been using in game resulting the use of less space. In terms of "high resolution textures" the Blu-ray would win hands down because it will be able to fit larger sized textures on the disk with so much more space. Then again PS3/360 hardware cannot handle high resolution textures due to their limitations so in turn a high capacity medium is really not necessary for the gaming community as of this gen. In conlcusion HDDVD/BLURAY are great for movies not so much for games.

jofu74

I'm sick of hearing this ridiculous cow propaganda. History has shown us that Blu-Ray is not necessary. DVD9 holds Mass Effect, Halo 3, and Assassin's Creed...what do we need Blu-Ray for? Besides, if games suddenly double in size in 2008 (for no reason whatsoever), they can always use multiple discs for 360 games.

7GB? You're rediculous.

DVD-9 supports 7.95 GB, and this is about 7 GB for you?

You sure it isn't more like 8 GB? I mean we're talking 950 MB away from 7 GB and 50 MB away from 8 GB. You think it's closer to 7 GB? I'm guessing that math isn't one of your strong subjects.

Which is only 10 hours. I guess "larger" has a different scale on Blu Ray than the rest of the world.

lol this was said at the ps3's introduction... what happened since? HS and Drake's were great games for ps3, AAA guaranteed! but... what the game is over already? bu bu but... teh bluray! why are FIRST PARTY titles so short? DVD?

no those titles were developed for only ps3, which proves that it's too expensive to develop longer games now. next gen, making these visuals won't be so expensive and games will be long again, so THEN bluray will be needed.

PS3's poor game quality won't cut it in 2008 and if they continue to be as mediocre as they were this year, you can say goodbye to the PS3 being a real contender in the console race. Note how I'm not stupid enough to say the PS3 will be discontinued, no I leave that to the morons.

Well, although ps3 has 50gb to work with, it still cant make a AAA game. It doesnt matter how much space, you can still make an amazing game with 9gb. Halo 3 for example... And plus, multiplayer components take little space and they can last forever.

Why would you immediately assume the reuse of textures and models is a result of disk capacity? Recycling of these elements is common in a great deal of games and could more likely be attributed to budget or time constraints.

While I agree that high definition formats are definitely "the way of the future," the argument that Blu-Ray is necessary now (or 2008 as the TC suggests) is clearly an embellished fabrication by Sony taken to heart by fanboys.

I'll believe it when I see it. Other than that, forget it. It's been proven that the amount of space doesn't equal to longer or better games. The skills of developers can only prove this.

Who said that? After all, games do need to be compressed so that you can get the best package in the end. Do you want everything spilled out onto one disc?

Blu-ray won't ever be a necessity as HD, Digital video and music never wiill. You can make a great game even for a cell phone with only a few Kb.

Blu-ray is a necessity when trying to deliver the highest possible quality of content, that's a fact. It's obvious that even if they wanted to make the game more resourceful, using lossless 7.1 audio, unique textrues for each world, unique voices for each NPS, etc they would't be able to because of space constraints.

That's the botton line, even if you have the buget and the time, on the 360 you'd still be limited by its media.

Drake's Fortune fills up almost the entire Blu-Ray disk and that game is like 8 hours.

Mass Effect is like 8gb, has great graphics and a typical run is 20 hours or more.

Hooray for Blu-Ray, I love how every single big PS3 Exclusive has been less than 10 hours long, It really revolutionizes gaming.
