NEW YORK (Reuters) - Most video games are "boring" or too complicated, and game makers need to do more to appeal to casual players, according to the head of the world's largest video game publisher, Electronic Arts Inc.
"We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play," EA Chief Executive John Riccitiello told the Wall Street Journal in a story posted on its Web site on Sunday.
Riccitiello became CEO at EA in April in his return to the game maker. EA's former chief operating officer had left the company in 2004 to help found Elevation Partners, a media and entertainment buyout firm.
The video game executive criticized the industry for rolling out sequels to new games that add little from the previous version.
"For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat," he was quoted as saying. "There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before."
The comments were made as the $30 billion video game industry prepares for its annual gathering, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, or E3, in Santa Monica, California. Anticipation is running high that cheaper hardware and a host of keenly awaited new games will fuel the strongest sales in years.

The only games i think are boring and suck are the ones published by EA.
[QUOTE="SUD123456"]Boring & Complex. Yep. A lot are. Not too complex to learn for geek fanboys. Just too complex and boring for either casuals, or gamers with limited time. Most of you weren't even a twinkle in your parents eyes, let alone in diapers, when I first started playing video games. Guess what? I still like them, but I don't have the time to read a 50 page manual, decipher what 100 symbols mean, and spend hours just figuring out how to adequately play the game.

I might be able to agree on the boring part...but complex? Where did that come from.. I mean, what game do I have to read a 50 page manual or decipher 100 symbols? Umm I'm clueless as to what games are complex these days... There are absoluty none.
The only one game I can think of that fits your description is the MYST series, I haven't played it but I've heard there are some pretty darn fustrating puzzles in those games. But other than that what else :|..
As for gamers with limited time, well thats what save point ares for :|, to come back and play another day. I'm sure it's not too hard to figure out how to save your game :|
Wii on the other hand is oversimplifieing games than they already are.. you don't want them too easy sheep otherwise you wouldn't need a brain at all :|
dude, saveponts are rubbish. Why do game devs feel that I'm not mature enough to save my own dam game when I want to save it? I hate having to play longer than I intended or having to leave my system on pause just because I haven't made it to a dam savepoint.
I suspect they do this to lengthen their short games.

I appreciate your points...and I am not suggesting one size fits all. But since you responded, I'll reciprocate.
Take C&C which I recently bought/played. I ended rather liking the game, but mostly because I had a run of a few days free time and spent a good portion on the game. It actually could have used a better manual. In any case, learning all the building types, the infantry types, vehicle types etc for the GDI. Then learn it all again for the Brotherhood, and then again for the Scrin. I've played a number of RTS games, so it is my own fault. But the point is that you have to spend multiple hours just learning how to play that game.
The problem with the save feature, isn't the ease of saving. The problem is how quickly/intuitively can you pick up the game again after the save. Take my C&C example, if you are time crunched and have an hour or two every week or two, you will be frustrated relearning that game over and over again. You simply need a good run of time to become familiar with all the controls and all the options. Similarly with Oblivion, which I really liked, but if you don't get to it for 2 or 3 weeks it takes a while to get back in it. The thing that saved Oblivion for me though is/was the excellent tracking system for all your quests. That made it way easier to remember what you were doing....without that I would have simply dropped the game.
Complexity also doesn't have to just mean challenging/difficult. It can also mean non-intuitive, repetitive, boring. There are plenty of easy to conceptualize, but painfully complex in the sense of number of buttons, repetitively pushed to do the simplest tasks. Sticking with Oblivion...a complexity of the plot required you to complete the same Gate closures over and over again....boring. Keeping track of miscellaneous equipment.....I think I wasted hours of my life just cursoring down to find the right equipment :)
My time is very valuable to me....why I only have a handful of posts here....same with my gaming.
If games really are getting boring it's not because they might be complex (which there not) it's because developers are too hard focused on making the next HALO KILLER generic first person shooter and not focusing or other genres.. there are too many FPS's that are other shadowing the other genres.Dahaka-UK
you got that right, way too many mediocre shooters grace these systems than need be. The truth is that gameplay tends to be bad in most games because of pride. Developers want to be new and innovative so instead of studying what others have done and improving on it, they either just steal and impliment poorly, or they try to reinvent the wheel. It'd be fine if they'd just copy the gameplay, but then give an awsome new story with character s we havent seen in locations we havent imagined. When you see films every film is filmed with a camera, and with humans, and post effects. It's the content that seperates them. For some reason game devs are allways hell bent onbeing original and fail, or they're tryingtoo hard to cash in on something successful, like FPS or GTA.
Hell, look at Crackdown, that was one simple little game with a wet fart of a story, but for some reason, it kept me entertained for a good 10-13hours. It was a rippoff of GTAs formula, but it gave you something cool: superhuman strength. Had it had a story, I bet it would have beenone of the better games to come out this year.

I agree with you guys on this point as well. There's a lot of me2, especially in shooters.
