Looks like the fog is finally clearing on the Wii U, folks.

Third parties seem to be in love with the Wii U. So far, developers like Irrational, Activision, Ubisoft, Bethesda, DICE, Crytek, Epic and Junction Point have all sung praises for the hardware. Notable in its support for Nintendo's next console has been megapublisher EA, pledging 'major support' for the Wii U. Now, after having had the development kits for the system for some time, they are ready to shed some light on the console's innards.

Speaking toEurogamer, EA Sports vice president Andrew Wilson said, "The short answer is yes, we have a better idea of Wii U's power; the longer answer is not quite.

"As every new piece of hardware and every new development library comes through we get a greater understanding of the power. With our early research we had been very happy with the output of the box and we expect that that will only go up moving forward.

"There are added challenges for us as developers when you think about rendering on two screens and what that might mean, but we're looking forward to that challenge.

"It's still moving," he added, "but I think we'll be able to do anything that we can do on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the Wii U."

Of course, that last line may not appear quite so encouraging to many, who would reasonably expect a notable power jump with the Wii U, considering that the system is five years newer than those two. When quizzed about this, Wilson had this to say:

"I think that's our hope… but again we're still in the early stages."

Whereas he was relatively forthcoming about the Wii U's power, he was more evasive about the Wii U's rumored online capabilities, which does not send out an encouraging message to those wondering why Nintendo has been mum on the subject. Apparently, EA Sports, like every other developer working on the Wii U, is under 'extremely strict NDAs.' However, he was willing to divulge some details, though nothing he said was conclusive either way.

"Online is something that we're working very closely with Nintendo on," said Wilson. "We are highlighting to them what we believe are the most important elements to that infrastructure to deliver a connected experience that we think is the future of gaming.

"They have demonstrated an openness and willingness to work with us and work with developers that I think will only land us in a positive place.

"We're working through the development with them now," he added. "We have a series of people who are under very strict NDAs as you can imagine, operating with them, building that system out."

So, there you have it. Like everything else about the system, the Wii U's capabilities and its online infrastructure remain shrouded in mystery. But by bit, however, the fog seems to be clearing. Will the Wii U be enough? We'll see soon enough.GamingBolt

This is all very interesting, particularly in light of Epic's comments yesterday that said that the Wii U can 'do stuff that the current consoles cannot.' EA is telling us something that is entirely different.

What do you guys think?

Source

EDIT: For comparision, here's what Epic said about the Wii U. Basically, they said it can 'do things that the current gen consoles cannot.'

Believe whomever you will, folks.

My thoughts exactly... Can you even get the crappy hardware Xbox and PS3 have? Maybe be on ebay lol. Seriously Nintendo only need to put a 3 year old card into that thing and get 1080p and AA. 4870 will do fine.

This is more of a negative statement. Wii U should destroy them, they should barely even be comparable.

"I think that's our hope" that it will be more powerful, eh? Not very encouraging. :\

At least Nintendo seems to be showing some humbleness on the online infrastructure side.

Well we know EA can be lazy when it comes to multiplats early in a systems life, remember 30fps Madden on PS3? I'd take Epics word as they are all about creating engines.

Well, let's be fair, as far as humility is concerned, Nintendo *never* said that the system will be very powerful either- all they ever said was that it will be powerful enough to run all games at 1080p, that's it.

I really wish they would release the specs already. At best, if we're lucky, the WiiU's power in comparison to PS4 and nextBox will be similar to that of the PS2 in comparison with Gamecube and Xbox.

You don't need to sell such old hardware to sell your system at a profit. If the Wii U turns out to be the Wii of this gen that would be bad. One of the biggest downfalls to the Wii is the lack of multiplats, I mean this year alone I can realistically see someone buying 10 games for the PS3 or 360 (with most being multiplats).. I can only think of one for the wii . =/

Sony's in a very good position to do so. They can re-use the cell (albeit a slightly faster one), blu-ray will be cheaper, and they can put more resources into having more, faster RAM than the competition (which will do wonders). Having a good GPU shouldn't be a problem this time around.

Again, this is merely guesswork of mine.

I don't know, I think it would be perfectly smart to try and push Nintendo out of third party support by releasing much more powerful systems. It'd be more developer support, more software sales and more royalties to share amongst themselves.

There's no way they want Nintendo to have a piece of the pie. They'll position their 360+Kinect for the casual audience and hit the hardcore audience hard with the 720.

True, but dev costs will skyrocket to the point of absurdity, and mainstream games will continue to stagnate as a result.

The 360 and PS3 actuallly use 2005 stuff, the 360 was basically a high end PC at the time of its launch.

2003/2004 stuff? Both the PS3 and 360 are firmly based in 2005 tech, at least on the GPU side.

RSX uses the Geforce 7800 architecture which did not debut until June 2005. Xenos also is based in 2005-2006 Radeon R520 architecture.

RV770 is 2008 tech.

because Nintendo runs a business. Their profit margins are higher if they spend less. In addition, this gives them more wiggle room to adjust the pricing. A lower prices = a lower barrier to entry for consumers. Console market is all about selling as much consoles as possible (each at profit is desirable) and getting the most money out of the market, via game licenses, accessories, etc. Nintendo aren't being cheap, they are playing the money game quite smartly. If you want a machine that is only dependent on what YOU WANT, you would get a PC. Other then that, you are going to be locked into the business first, your desires last.

[QUOTE="charizard1605"][QUOTE="DarkLink77"][QUOTE="charizard1605"] What leaks? Nothing official, brah.

Do you seriously think the Wii U won't be more powerful than consoles from 2005?

I think it won't be as much of a power leap as I'd have wanted.

my PC can do anything a PS3 and 360 can. what does that tell you about my PC? nothing. dont get me wrong im not bragging about my PC (its not much to brag about these days :P). my point is that this is another encrypted and useless comment regarding the wiiu specs. epic blurting out that its a powerful box (relative to what exactly? the wii? the PS2? the 360? my PC? my toaster?). then this. it basically tells us nothing. sure it can do anything a PS3 can do. is that all it can do? does it have a few more tricks up its sleeve? is it only matching 2005 hardware? then theres the darksiders 2 devs saying its really easy to develop for only to find there stuff has stopped working with updated dev kits (which is to be expected at this stage). its just another useless media grabbing statement. at the mo, going by all these conflicting rumours and comments i think only one thing can be concluded regarding the wiiu specs: there still a work in progress. i do agree with you though charizard.....those looking for a significant leap over the Ps3 and 360 i think will be dissapointed. those looking for 1080P and/or 60FPS as standard will also be dissapointed (when a dev hits the wall the res is the first thing to go. also stop using the PC as a measuring stick....it doesnt apply.). i do think ninty will require a minimum of 720P but not 1080. and those looking for samaritan as standard will also be dissapointed. but thats just my hunch. i have 0 facts to back that up as we have only 3 facts about the wiiu spec...4 maybe. the CPU is from IBM. it has 8GB of internal storage. the GPU is from AMD and the GPU is R770 based (which tells us very little). after that we know exactly nothing about the guts of the wiiu.

Ok....it would be pretty damn sad if it couldn't do everything they can. Hell, it should be able to do quite a bit more....

[QUOTE="DarkLink77"] True, but dev costs will skyrocket to the point of absurdity, and mainstream games will continue to stagnate as a result. organic_machine

That's very true, I still think they should wait a few more years until releasing new tech because of that.

Well, that seems to be what they're doing. I imagine Sony and Microsoft will probably compete with the Wii U through the 360/PS3 for a few years, then release systems that potentially destroy it in 2014 or so.

Over the next 3 years, I think a lot of work is going to be done in trying to get better performance-per-watt from today's graphics cards, shrinking them down to reduce cost, heat and power consumption. So that by 2014, there will be some relatively low-power solutions that can pack a lot of bang for the buck.

As much as it pained me to read that (With your no CaPitALs), that's really the right way to approach this.

I mostly agree with you on everything, but one thing: Nintendo made a point of stating that the Wii U will run every single game at 1080p, that it's powerful enough to do that. In fact, that's the only thing they'd say that was concrete. I think Nintendo might be quite stubborn and adamant that each game on the Wii U be 1080p.

sony said the same thing about the PS3. at 120FPS no less. like sony, nintendo are no angels and they lie from time to time. im a big fan of the company but im under no illusions about what they are about. only MS are saints :P j/k. if they actually hold true to that then great. but really dont expect it. as soon as devs hit the wall then the first thing there going to drop is the res. i just dont see ninty putting the foot down and telling 3rd parties that any game must be 1080P on the wiiu. making 1080P as standard is also going to up the cost of the hardware. they need hardware that makes it relatively easy for devs to do it. given the choice i think ninty are going to aim for good and consistent 720P instead. it will probably support 1080P in the same way the PS3 and 360 do. i.e. not well. maybe at launch we will see it as most games will be ports and making 360/PS3 games run at 1080P on the wiiu will be easy. but eventually devs will hit the wall and cuts will be required.
