EA's PS4 games will be ($81)

European retailer GAME says that EA will be charging £54.99 for their PS4 games. This is news to a lot of folks as most games on current consoles in the region are £44.99. This appears to be limited to EA at the moment. GAME says:

At present, the only publisher to confirm costs of their next generation games are EA, attaching a price of £54.99

This £54.99 price converts to almost $81 US dollars. Hopefully this changes before the PS4 releases later this year. If EA is the only publisher doing this then perhaps it wont be so bad. Sadly, I think they can get away with this price hike.

Some publishers tried something like this back at the beginning of this past generation so hopefully this doesnt last long.

If games are going to cost that at retail just imagine how they will be on the PS Store for digital prices.  They'll probably be like £65 **** quid per game.   I was hoping PS4 games would be the same price as PS3 games eventually but this is getting beyond stupid.

$9.18 actually.  £6.19 per hour is pretty much chump change.  

Probably going to wait for most ggames to drop in price next gen because this is getting really ridiculous.   They're never satisfied with the prices, they'll just keep increasing it through the generations.  

Also I hope game sharing still exists on the PS4.  Because I will be exploiting that shit to the max. 

It'll be hillarious if EA tries to hike up the price of their games for the new gen.

No idea exactly how it works now. Is there something that makes standard edition games $59.99, or are all games $59.99 because that's what "everyone else" starts out at... and nobody wants to the bad guy going to first breach $69.99. Obviously there are plenty of games that start out at $49.99 or $39.99, so developers are free to go lower. 

Regardless of whatever the current arrangement is, I'd imagine if Sony/Microsoft wanted too, they could choose to only license games that are MSRP $59.99 and refuse to license any standard editions that are $69.99 MSRP (this of course only means standard editions, there is no way at all Sony could control anything to do with prices or content of limited editions). Or at the very least I'm sure they grant wide latitude to those limited editions. 

They already try to charge pc gamers this price with origin. Thankfully we have steam and nobody gives a shit.

Kinda sucks for you console users though, since you lack any free will whatever and will buy titles if it was double this price.

Prices don't convert like that. UK prices include VAT (which is about 20% someone will give the right figure) and are always more expensive.blue_hazy_basic

EA want to make sure there is no second hand market for their games. This way they achieve that by putting people off buying any copies in the first place!Avenger1324

What's funny, is EA game prices tend to drop like a rock. Possiblby more than any other publisher/developer. 

I guess I don't care if they charge $69.99, so long as they still print alot of copies. Which leads to prices dropping later on. It would be better if they charge the same as now, but at least most EA games are always in plentiful supply and they have a ton of older games at retailers for $10-20. You can't say that about all of the publishers where the supply stops sooner, or that keep the MSRP at $59.99 for way too long. For me I'd rather have lots of options for $10-20 games later on. So that's actually the more important thing. It's rare that a game is actually worth $59.99 to me, so it will just be a little bit harder to justify a game for $69.99. 

EA Sports are really bad though, sports games $69.99 and adding that lame-ass "Ultimate Team" revenue leeching mode to all of their game? Puuhhhhlease.
