well that question would mean that we had atleast one RPG to chose from, no?
Well I suoopse the TES series can still be considered an rpg, so it would win by default, but barely.
No souls game have ever been an RPG, but rather a dungeon crawler, yeah they have been around for more then a few decades, both in PnP and pc/console games. So it is closer in relation to Diablo. Atleast if you are used to play PnP rpgs you would come to that conclusion (you know the experiences that RPGs on pc and consoles try to emulate?).
To be exact the Souls games woul be Little more then a small part of a larger RPG, taking part inside the dungeon part of an rpg while ignoring all the other parts that technically makes an rpg (meaning the focus of a dungeon in a larger RPG, or the sub genre where all notions of social interaction and none hostile envioments are present outside of save zones).
As a game though the souls games are way better, they capture the feel of a dungeon crawlers quite well, and I have often stated that the souls games are likely close to how diablo would look if made for the first time now (as they follow near exact same design philosophy).
I have my own issues with the TES games, mostly due to them ignoring one of the most important facets of RPGs namely choice and consequence (as in no consequences to your actions really, atleast it is VERY slim).
