[QUOTE="hakanakumono"][QUOTE="BoloTheGreat"]Man those are some god awful names. double_heist
They're better than Final Fantasy XIII's.
Jeanpole is kinda bad. :P But Hope for a boy is even worse. :|Jeanpole = french Johnpaul? Lol.
Final Fantasy names used to work. Whoever is naming them is awful. Final Fantasy names have been strange since VII, but they worked somehow. These just don't.

Snow, Lightning, Hope, Vanill(a), maybe there's Chocolate./p>
Midgar wasn't generic. In 1997 it was probably the only city like it in a JRPG. And there have been very few if any followers. Just because a game is popular doesn't mean it's mechanics were generic.
Plus, it doesn't look like Midgar.

it's not 1997 any more
the futuristic, steampunky, ruined city vibe seems played out to me
it really reminds me of midgar, but that's probably because i've been playing through crisis core lately
protip, crisis core is one of the worst rpgs ever made and no-one should play it
Looks good the scenery reminds me of LO alot even the music.bigboss5ak
That's probably why I dig it. It's got the same kinda mechanical steampunk look to it. That's a big positive. Love it. Now I hope it doesn't have the annoying and cliche grown ups that talk like children and look like 'em. That's one of the things I loved about LO. The main characters that were older resembled adults and sounded like 'em. Cooke and Mack were a little annoying, but hey, that's young kids for ya!

hy4k
it aint 1997 any more money
the futuristic, ruined city vibe seems played out now. and thats exactly what this is
And yet futuristic cities still aren't generic because hardly any games use them, and hardly any games have used cities like Midgar, if any at all. The closest to Final Fantasy VII is maybe WachenRoder for the SegaSaturn.
It's not "ruined." End of Eternity uses a futuristic look inspired by the 1920s maybe mixed in with some steam punk. It's very fresh and interesting as opposed to more classical fantasy settings that 9/10 RPGs use.
Edit: I've stayed away from the VII compilation and have been very happy with my decision. I like the original, but all the attempts to expand upon it have been like trying to repair a cracked vase with a hammer.

 caught me just as i edited. well done they're probably not played out, i've just been playing too much crisis core
it reminds me so much of midgar though. it just has this kind of slummy quality. add in the prerendered looking backgrounds and the lifeless npc's and it doesn't look too hot
+ like i said tri ace have been messing up this gen. not really that impressed
