WHAT?!?!?

WHY is Ensemble studios closing down? WTH!?

WHY?

Ive been the fan of them ever since Age of empires 1, since i was a 7 year old (born in 1990).

and Age of Mythology is one of the best RTS games I ever played.

What the hell is going on?

No seriously i need an explanation on why thier closing down. If its ****ing MS doing thier stingy **** again like they did with FASA, creators of Mechwarrior and others then o man, my anger is going to make me spontaneosly combust.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....****!.

That sucks. What was MS's official reason for shutting them down?

Today we can safely say that MS has surpassed EA in becoming the "evil big corporation" for PCgamers. For a decade EA was synonymous with a big company that buys out indpendent devs, strips them off their IPs and finally closes them down. But today we see what while EA might be the one who started the trend, but in this case the student has surpassed their teacher and MS is now worse than EA ever was.

The two new studios, one will be handling Halo Wars support, the other one is enigma, but the second one is where the leads of Ensemble seem to be going and irt looks like they will stay the hell away from MS. I hope the first studio will do the same, for their own sake

I want to know as well. It seems just another money thing. Not games.
Companies who only look at the numbers (ie companies that become too big, automated, impersonal) miss out on long term insight. They become like Monsanto or that chinese candy brand who commit mass murder like it makes sense, circumventing their mission/the law using all sins God could think of because it is more profitable in the short term.

I hope the workers there all find new jobs, its a sad time in the real world because despite record breaking gaming sales there are still massive closures and layoffs to make ends meet.

Read thison why thier ****ing Microsoft game studios decided to kill off Ensemble

MS doesnt give a crap about the PC platform no more. Piracy is..i mean HAS killed that platform, no ones want to make games exclusively for it anymore.

Even Crytek has now decided to make console games instead, they say that the regret making crysis for PC only as so much of it was pirated and in the future they wont be making any PC only games.

The biggest name in RTS just died.

Piracy didn't have anything to do with it. Ensemble was selling better than 99% of console studios that stay in the business. MS doesn't give a crap about PCgaming, but not because of piracy, but because of 360

Hmm why couldn't ensemble make games for a different platform then? They're not tied up to the pc right?

Because while they were very profitable they specialized in a genre that is profitable only on PC, not on consoles. So MS got rid of them. It's a common pattern: Zoo Tycoon, Flight Simulator and Age of Empires, three huge franchises, each new game in them selling at least 2mln copies, but all three extremely PC-centric and with no real chance of making big buck on consoles.

What MS wants aren't profitable developers, they want developers that are profitable on consoles.

It's a very sad time in my books. Ensemble Studios was one of my favourite developers, with Age of Empires being one of my most played games on the PC. They showed quality in game making ... I hope Halo Wars is good, as a testament to their quality as a game developer.

I just don't get why they had to chose such an extreme method for Ensemble Studios. The last games they released were all million sellers and some were amongst the most played RTS games online.

Didn't Esemble start developing an RTS for the 360 a year before they even got the rights to use the Halo franchise? A year before they even knew they were developing a Halo game at all.

Argh. ok ONE of the biggest names in RTS just died. But IMO i liked the AOE games and AOM better than war3, SC, DOW etc.

Ensemble Studios closing its doors is one of the saddest things to happen to video games in a long time. Just think about how many hours I've sunk into Age of Empires II...

Ensemble Studios will be missed, I hope they all do well in whatever they're planning. :(

limpbizkit818

Forget AOE, AOM was the best. I can't believe Ensemble is gone

QFT. I still play AOM now. A very very sad day to see such a great studio go. Great years of gaming thanks to those guys.

Except that I'm not a console gamer, so I haven't seen much of Factor 5's work.

Also, Ensemble's screwup with AoE3 didn't seal the deal. Halo Wars doesn't interest me at all, gameplay wise, and the only thing that stands out about the game for me is the fact that it's Halo.

I dont understand Microsoft for letting developers go and shutting down studios. If they think they can just survive on the majority of their titles being third party that's a bad idea. I love how Sony and Nintendo have great first party studios. They should take a lesson from those two companies when it comes to developing good first party studios.

Uh huh, Halo Wars' gameplay is turning out to be a little too simplified to my taste.

Still that game sold more than most RTS games around. I just find it very strange to see Ensemble get the boot by microsoft especially now that the game sector of microsoft is doing pretty well. It all looks to me like microsoft are just abandoning anything pc gaming related.

I appreciate what they had done in the past but this gen they didn't have much going for them. AoE3 wasn't that good and they just couldn't catch up to the other top RTS developers of this gen. It still sucks to see them go.

why?, its a real time strategy ...and its not on the pc......and it since it brands the name halo I doubt it will be that great just because they know that enough people will buy it for that reason alone

Ensemble Studios knows (knew :( ) what they are doing, and with the Halo name attatched, you can bet that MS would not allow a trash game to come out, since that would negatively affect a billion dollar trade name.

Add to that the added Halo lore and the many hands on previews that were surprisingly positive, and I think it will be a great game.

Better question, why are you hating on people who are looking forward to it? If you don't care about it, thats fine.

sorry mate, but you questioning him based on your assumptions is pretty silly. it being designed first for the 360 actually gives it more promise when compared to a port, and you reasoning that they'll make it poor quality because of the brand is equally ridiculous.

Actualy two studios and fortunately it looks like the leads of Ensemble will be in the one that's not going to be working with MS.

Heck, let's be honest...even the studio that is will just handle HW support, for their own game I'm afraid they will have to go elsewhere.

And third, games those studios are expected to deliver in the next few years are expected to be more strategic and profitable to the company than anything we would be finishing after Halo Wars.

Yea right MS. People RARE spend more on thier games I'm sure and haven't even turned in a profit. What a joke, you honestly want them to believe it was a money thing? I'm pretty sure they were pissed off to no extent.

Age of Empires (3 million)

Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome [expansion pack] (1 million)

Age of Empires III (2.5 million)

Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings (2 million shipped)

Age of Mythology (1 million)

yea ms I'm sure you can't afford to keep these guys around with every game being a million seller but you can keep rare around with thier lackluster games and lackluster sales. SIGH.

i think it's good they shuttered. they hadn't made a great rts since AoEII. it's like they gave up and just thought it would be good to make mediocre slop instead of pushing the genre forward.
