"Tim Sweeney, Founder of Epic Games and the creator of the Unreal Engine recently did an interview with Glixel where he talked about how he believes younger video gamers these days are moving away from consoles.

“Young people are growing up in mobile. They’re playing games in different ways, usually shorter play sessions spread throughout the day. It’s not the kind of experience where you sit down for four hours and play a game. And the gamers who are getting into that are moving more and more into PC, I think. PC is becoming a more convenient way of playing.”

He must not be the only dev that believes that. It's apparent when more and more games are going to PC.

That company... they say whatever suits their current product's direction.

More like Gears of Bore was a prime example of console gaming vanity... Unreal Tournement died because of that s*it ... UT was a much better franchise.

I've heard this conversation for at least two decades!

In 5th and 6th generation it was because, with the introduction of CDs and DVDs (respectively), the consoles were becoming PCs.

In the 7th generation because, looking at the success of the Wii and the potential success of Kinect and Move, the industry would become 100% casual.

Now in the 8th generation it is said that it is the mobile that will take the reins...however we see the Xbox One selling well and the PS4 to hit record sales never seen before.

Seriously...leave it alone lol The market is growing on all fronts. No trend will replace another.

He's right. The traditional AAA games and console industry is not offering them anything. Kids nowadays are playing Minecraft and, to a lesser extent, Pokemon, as well as mobile games. It's hard for that same industry and its zealots to understand this but, no matter how deep the 20 and 30 somethings' pockets are, this industry is in deep trouble for the long run if it doesn't cater to children too. Last gen, you would be sort of right to assume that those kids would naturally gravitate towards the Call of duties, the Halos and whathaveyou, but that does not seem to be the case anymore. The industry should be scared to death when they see children asking for tablets and phones instead of video game consoles for Christmas, but the money that grown ups keep throwing at them seems to blind them from what's happening.

Gee. I could've told em that two years ago. I could also say laptop gamers will be the ones holding back PC gaming. I know because I'm one of them. ;-)

I don't know honestly. Especially when Nintendo has a president that seems to be taking some BS extremes right now (Wii U and 3DS' aren't restocking, that should say something).

Switch to replace Wii U and 3DS all in one? I could see that.

But this early? Iwata never did anything like this. Yamauchi never did anything like this (bar VB because that was a whole different degree of fail). It just seems like a way to murder goodwill.

I disagree... kids will play whatever you put in front of them. My nephew will go in a trance for hours if I put poke-moon in front of him. The difference now a days is the sales come from the adults buying games. All the people who grew up on games, now have jobs and their own means of buying games... and that is where the money is, and that is who you should cater towards. IMO

NOPE, consoles moved away from kids. Seriously if you have an 8 year old and don't want them to play games with shooting people in the head, the f word, boobies, etc, what can they play? Sports and racing? And the Nintendo stuff.

It's called Paragon and it's still in open beta and it's far from a dud. You obviously haven't played it so we know you don't know what you are talking about LOL.

### He is correct when he say younger gamers are finding different ways of gaming but to say they are "moving" away from consoles is misleading cause I don't that's the case. Console sales were big this holiday for both consoles for the most part and I'm sure not all of those sales are for older gamers like myself. There's just different options to gaming but no one is moving away from consoles, just finding option number 2.

Based on my 9 year old twins choice in video games then Mobile (3DS and IPads) and PC is far more popular than console gaming with them. They play Minecraft, Pokémon and Sims 4.

Couldn't have said it better myself. There will always be demand for console gaming. The only reason Nintendo supports mobile gaming is because thei consale sales are stagnating.

PS4 will most likely pass PS3 (which was seen as a disappointment). I doubt it gets to anywhere near PS2 levels, but it's still a healthy market. I see no way that XB1 gets near the 360 levels despite however MS wants to spin that it is "exceeding" 360 in it's PR (there is no way that's true anymore, right?). Of course if you mean [PS4+XB1] will be greater than [PS3+360], that could be true. But only if we ignore the Wii. If we want to total all console sales including Nintendo, it is still way down from last gen.

He's implying that kids are playing on PCs. Lol. Mobile is not only killing console gaming, but also making PC gaming bleed slowly and painfully.

If anyone thinks PC gaming s 'safe' then they're wrong.

I don't know any kids that play on PC.

Steam is mostly adults and late teens.

My 9-yr old plays Minecraft almost exclusively on the PC although she has the pocket version for iPad and the basic Minecraft game for the PS3.

It's the mods that keep her glued to the PC version.

For years I've been saying that Nintendo is not the choice of casual gamers... Minecraft and call of duty are... Even to children... Almost all the kids I know, family and friends are heading towards pc.

Microsoft owns both Windows 10 PC platform and Xbox One family devices.

Anyway...

Until recent lifting on non-Chinese game console sales restriction, Chinese government has shewed it's gaming market towards PC and mobile phone gaming.

The Minecraft culture isn't limited to just the game. It also includes Minecraft videos at YT, in addition to the modding scene.

Even a modest PC can handle the above Minecraft stuff easily.

Normally, I wouldn't let my kid have her own PC. But, it's a school requirement to have one nowadays.

The switch basically consolidates their home and handheld market. When you look at the 3DS sales this makes a world of sense. Imagine being able to claim both markets at once, they'll always be in the lead sales wise.

Minecraft proves that the only people who care about graphics are graphic whores. Normal people just want to play a fun game.

For years I've been saying that Nintendo is not the choice of casual gamers... Minecraft and call of duty are... Even to children... Almost all the kids I know, family and friends are heading towards pc.

Casuals go where it's easy and simple. Mobile has this in spades. PC? Not a chance.

Epic just released some MoBA recently right? Think it was a dud. Guess they don't know the industry that well after all lol!

I think Sony recently released PSVR right? It's a pile of trash. Guess they still don't know the industry and have no fucking idea why 900pStation even sold so much lol!

@2Chalupas: "Of course if you mean [PS4+XB1] will be greater than [PS3+360], that could be true. "

Actually I think it in the that way.
