Xbox wins again with ESPN. You can watch pretty much any sport you can think of.

Heirren

How much does it cost? If ESPN was included in the cost of Xbox Live, I'd agree with you. Otherwise, it's a complete fail.

It is included in the cost of Gold, as long as your ISP provides ESPN3. Or you can NOT pay the cost of gold, and get the exact same content by going to www.espn3.com. MS wins again, by lumping a service you already pay for into their paid online service.

seriously i always love the 60 bucks a year argument that is the equalivant of one crappy game u dont buy. seriously it could be worse ms could be doing monthly fees of something like 10 bucks a month. everytime u say well its free on this or that who cares. video games are expensive. quit trying to post same stupid arguments as he said in waterboy "we know, we know"xbox360isgr8t
They DO charge $10 a month.... Well, I don't know what the official MSRP of one month is now with the hike, but 1 month cards on Amazon are between $8 and $15. So they do in fact charge $10 a month, they just give you a discount for prepaying a year at a time.

wow its like 5 bucks a month but guess what they do not charge per month. It is up to you how you pay. It is amazing how ignorant system wars is about the stupidest oldest arguments. $60 bucks? fail online is always cheaper than in store and even sometimes in store they discount live 12 month cards. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Month-Live-Gold-Card/dp/B0029LJIFG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288883010&sr=8-1 there is no point to continue on arguing. xbox live has always had a fee guess what its a smart business move. Everyone can hate on ms for doing business how they do but guess what the majority of us on here do not own a business nor know how to run one. Why would you let something be completely free when you can charge for it and people will pay for it?

So your defense is, people will pay for it, thus its okay. No wonder so many people are okay with it.

It's cool, for sports fans. The point a lot of people are trying to make, is that the service is included with your internets, if your isp supports it. You've already paid for it, and you can access it through any number of web-enabled devices. But MS makes you pay an additional fee to use it on 360 (just like Netflix, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).

musicalmac

I don't pay for Live in order to watch ESPN, to browse Facebook, to tweet, or to watch things on Netflix. I pay for Live mainly so I can play with my friends. It just so happens that there are a lot of perks associated with it. ESPN is just another one of those perks now, so, it's neat. Not a game-changer, but it's certainly nothing one could be critical of.

Even though MS cited ESPN as one of the reason that they HAD to increase their rates by 20%? Despite the fact that many Gold users can't access it, many others don' care about it, and any of them that do use it, could have used the service anyway, without Live, on a different device? Seems there's plenty in that to be critical of.

[QUOTE="Fuhgeddabouditt"] I never stated I had Cable channels :| OTA includes CBS, NBC,FOX, ABC, etc. Pretty much all the major networks and I get to catch my Sunday football games. YOU keep saying nobody has the right to tell X this and Y that. If you choose to pay for whatever, so be it. No one was attacking, instead was trying to have a discussion seeing that this is an internet forum. If you choose to pay, Yay, if one doesnt, Yay. It doesnt mean they have no job its just that they simply dont see the need in paying extra. Thats it, this was the whole point. Bring up that I have to pay for my electric bill and my PS3. No **** sherlock :|. Once I have these things already paid for, I dont feel the need to pay extra for something I can already gain access to with no additional cost.

Skittles_McGee

what you get your internet service for free? who's your internet provider...i want free internet to. thats pretty cool.

my point IS, since some you grown people can't seem to comprehend....to some affect, one way or another, YOU'RE PAYING. be Internet or or cable services...whatever. YOU ARE PAYING or paid....so its an hypocrisy to try and belittle someone else because they choose to pay for something whether you'd pay for it or not. since you're already paying for a service to even get onpsn or you're gaming rig, or systems wars to discuss it SHERLOCK. you're argument doesn't match. it's too the point now where you're trying to make sense, but you're not because you keep changing gears in your argument. i mean it's funny as hell watching you guys trying to flip and spin **** to win this argument. it's not possible to win. every luxury service on this planet has a cost. every single one. it's the person choice to whether they choose to flip the bill or not. who are you or anyone to say that one group of people are dumb to put their own money to something they enjoy like Xbox Live. it's their money and choice whether you would or not. that's some petty immature stuff right there to do. no rational mind with agree with it. like i said earlier TWICE.i'm sure there's something you do and pay for that some people don't feel the need to do. now if those people came up to you talking down to you and trying to say or convince you that what you're getting/doing is ethically wrong and you're foolish to put money towards it, you'd be highly offended by that. especially if it was something minor and for your own enjoyment like video games. so why would it be alright in this situation? because you can hide behind your computer and say it? no, it's notok. it's some petty, young minded, insecure stuff to do....and i'm just stating it.

besides, what the hell are you even in here for if you don't have cable with espn channels or Xbox Live with the espn app anyway?? if you don't have either then you should have no input in this conversation at all...unless the internet you use to watch espn3 on is free to use and you never paid for. or you're just in here to troll Live members for enjoying their purchase. if so, then u proved my initial judgement correct again...you're petty in demeanor. so why try to dispute it?unless you get either internet or cable television, or both, free of charge their is no argument for you. all you can do is tread water until you sink.

You sure write a lot for someone who is completely ignoring the point.

what is your point...that, "haha, well at least i don't have to pay for Live to" when no one said you had to lol? is that the point that you feel i'm not getting?

I dont care to pay 60 bucks in reality i will end up only paying maybe 40 bucks for live every year cause i am smart and know where to buy it cheaper. I also am supporting something that I like and want to continue see stick around. i pay to play online. anything else that i have access to is just a nice perk if i want to use it. im done arguing with fanboys.

It's one more feature that's pretty well implemented. There are a number of Gold users who do not have access, and some who may not care. But what does it matter? Look at the feature objectively, not subjectively. Nothing about ESPN on the 360 is a bad thing.

Go to www.espn3.com. If your ISP is on the list, congrats, you get ESPN3. You can use any web enabled device to use it, or a 360 if you are a Gold member.

ESPN on the 360 is a nice perk, I hope they add UFC fight events on there and I'll be happier.

Which is silly to me. Online gaming won't disappear if I don't pay for XBL. There's alternatives that offer the same thing or better (in the case of PC) that don't charge me. Why I should pay for something anyone else offers for free? Because its business? Because its not a lot of money? Terrible reasoning.

you can have your view thats fine than dont buy it. any reason that someone gives for xbox live costing money will be considered terrible by fanboys. eventually sony will charge the way ms charges and not just the psn+ thing before ms makes live 100% free. ms aint changing so get over it. move on.

you play on the pc its a great platform got a lot of great things. I play on the 360 because i can play games like halo reach, mass effect, mass effect 2, gears of war, gears of war 2 etc etc and I dont have to worry about buying my pc and making sure it has the standards that i need to run all those games smoothly and i also have a nice perk of being able to communicate and talk to all my friends that also have a 360 and dont pc game. that is pretty simple why i own a 360 and pay for live.

Agreed. Any game with Ovechkin in it will do for me.

I don't watch hockey, so I could care less if they ever add that dying sport. ESPN3 has been available for while, but for people who don't or can't get it, this is still a nice option to have. Especially if you missed a game or forgot to DVR or TIVO it. I'll have to check it out this weekend.

Sony will charge eventually once Playstion + and Playstation Reward fail miserably like HOME did. How those things were to get lots of money to counter their losses for having PSN free. Sony definitely wants to make the same kind of money M$ is making with XBL, but they want to do it while leaving PSN online free and I don't think that will happen.

When MS tells Johnny Joe (who doesn't have espn3) that his Gold fee is being raised 20% a year because of they are now allowing other gold members to access ESPN3 over Live, that is not bad? Or maybe he has espn3, but doesn't care about sports, or doesn't care about using it on Live, because he already uses it on his Mac, but his rate is still going up 20%, that isn't bad?

ianuilliam
20% of 50USD is an extra few nickles a month. The increase in the price of XBL was greatly exaggerated on these forums. It's not even news-worthy, the increase is negligible. That being said, the increased price has nothing to do objectively with the option of watching ESPN3 on your TV through your 360 console. If you can't watch it, bummer, you have to worry about a negligible price increase, but don't get ESPN3. I for one would rather watch my big sporting events (usually Soccer) on my TV than my external monitor at home. I'll say it again--there is nothing to criticize about ESPN on Live.

I watched both NBA games last night, it was great. I watched the Bucks/Celtics and it went into OT. When that game ended I switched over to the Lakers game and rewinded it all the way to the beginning of the game. I used to use ESPN3.com on my pc, but 52" HDTV> my 20" PC monitor

you should, the Lakers game they showed on there lastnight was amazing:D. Kobe even almost got into a fight with some bench player...it was chippy all game. very entertaining, lol. seeing as though i don't have cable, having this espn app is a dream come true.

Erm, what loyalty? I'm more of a PC gamer than anything else and I don't do the whole brand loyalty thing. :?

oh ok, you just do the whole brand bashing thing...gotcha. if you're so, "not in the fight" then why are u getting in it as if you are.

I'm not bashing either (is anything I'm saying going through at all?) and I have an opinion on this, so I'm expressing it. Just like anyone else. Though if I were praising XBL, your tune would be much different. But since I'm not, I'm not allowed my opinion

Well, I just tried this out for the first time, and I must say, it is pretty nice. For someone that doesn't watch television, or subscribe to cable, espn--along with netflix--really does make xbox live worthwhile. Before I'd always say I was on Live for Reach alone, but now its a bit different. $60 is a bit much, and I disagree with it on principle alone, but in the real world, you could probably pay maybe $40/year.

Even still, MS business model doesn't sit peacefully with me.

20% of 50USD is an extra few nickles a month. The increase in the price of XBL was greatly exaggerated on these forums. It's not even news-worthy, the increase is negligible. That being said, the increased price has nothing to do objectively with the option of watching ESPN3 on your TV through your 360 console. If you can't watch it, bummer, you have to worry about a negligible price increase, but don't get ESPN3. I for one would rather watch my big sporting events (usually Soccer) on my TV than my external monitor at home. I'll say it again--there is nothing to criticize about ESPN on Live.

You can hook your computer up to your TV, just saying :D.

I don't really use ESPN3 on my PC though because as a big sports fan I just pay for most of the sports packages from comcast.

I don't have the best computer speakers and I don't really like watching movies and shows on my computer when I have a much better TV in the other room. For me this is great because now I can watch the MLS tournament and don't have to worry about missing any games. I also get to enjoy it from my couch. Some people who use their computers a lot more might think differently about ESPN3 on xbox, but for me I think it is great.

How do espn and Netflix (both services that you can use on other devices WITHOUT paying the extra $60) make that $60 (or even $40) worthwhile?

lol, same with the comcast sports packages--and I DID used to connect my computer to my TV for major sporting events only ESPN3 covered. Now I don't have to. :)

For me, convenience. I sure as heck am not going to move a pc back and fourth to watch espn3, comfortably, on a 50 plasma. I do not watch television, other than the occasional sports event. I do not like watching anything on a computer monitor. I still disagree with the principle behind it, but at the same time I'm not going to lie and say that having espn3 on 360 sucks. THIS is the sort of advancement I like seeing for Live. Facebook, Twitter, etc--I've never even bothered to see what it looks like on Live. Personally, I don't even know what twitter is, outside of the name. But having X and Y streaming services is a step in the right direction, imo. Who knows, perhaps tivo-like services will be next.
