Well as you already know, ES just scored an 8.5 on GS.

And as you aldo probably already know, Blue Dragon scored a 6.0 here on GS.

Guys and gals: This is what I've been talking about.

Blue Dragon= Stale, generic, and predictable JRPG garbage.

Eternal Sonata= A fresh take on the genre with innovative gameplay and a unique premise.

I predicted that ES would beat BD, and it isn't because I have a crystal ball; it's because the days of the traditional JRPG are over.

Seriously Sakaguchi, and company: Pack it up.

Your gameplay is stale, and your characters are bland and predictable. Really, just go. No one wants you any more.

I am more than willing to hand the reins of the JRPG genre to innovators like Eternal Sonata.

Innovation finally scores a win. :D

i played the demo and it pushed me away from the gaming. sounded interesting until i played it. i find the mix bad or the demo was bad. but if it really is getting these scores ill have to rent it. cant buy it though cause its not my priority as of late or soon cause of all the other games coming out.

I disagree. I think it has a level of depth and flexibility that would make its combat consistently fun.

You got that right.

And to the tc. Just because this one insignificant site gave Blue Dragon a mediocre score it don't mean traditional jrpg's are done for. Geesh, the leaps people make here can really be ridiculous. Read Gamespot's review of Blue Dragon before sticking your foot in your mouth, oops, to late. :P

I will say it again: Traditional JRPG's are done for.

The gameplay is from an era far gone; it is practically the equivalent of the lack of free-aim in the original DOOM.

It needs to be destroyed.

Blue Dragon review doesn't mean that at all.

It just means Blue Dragon the game.

Sucks for a better lack of a word.

Wait, I've played eternal sonata gameplay in a game called ff12. That said, it is a generic 'has been game' but, it had a pretty design, great gameplay (the reason why ff12 is my favorite), and a good story. I stated that this will be the best JRPG on xbox 360, and will probably score AA, while the others score 6's, and yet I get called a fanboy :(.

Meh..I didn't enjoy Eternal Sonata demo (ES) as much as the Blue Dragon demo (BD). Eternal Sonata is better looking from an artistic perspective, but the battle system is simplified and will appeal to lesser hardcore JRPG fans. Blue Dragon isn't too complex either, but I enjoyed it a bit more. Maybe I just like the old school style more....I don't know.

Blue Dragon has gotten some mixed reviews. GameInformer gave it 9 and an 8. You either hate it or love it.

Actually your first post is full of misinformation. Eternal Sonata's battle system is very very old as in PSX era old. Games like "Tales of" and original Star Ocean used this battle system on the PSX. Theres nothing innovative with Eternal Sonata.

Actually BD is more innovative than Eternal Sonata because of its "monster fights" and ability to fight more than 1 group of enemies.

The flaw that BD had was a boring story, Slowdowns, repetetive music...

You are quite mistaken about the battle system in ES. It is very much original and not all that much like Tales or Star Ocean in any way. The only similar aspect is that you hit the button in real time with the attack..that's all.

cant we just like both and both can exist simultaneously? i mean i for one really really enjoy blue dragon and i like its old-school feel and when i get eternal sonata i am sure i will like how it has a different take. The term "in the right direction" seems a bit harsh to lost odyssey, dragon quest, and the many more turn based jrpgs coming out.

If you like turnbased thats great if you like eternal sonata more real time thats fine too no need to bash those games its not like those games arent good.

wow i found the demo very bad cause the gameplay is pretty much turnbased except you they let you move the character around and they time you to make moves so you have to do everything right. i just found the demo really bad. and the voice acting was bad (as usual. not too many games actually have good voicing though).

But from all these positive comments i keep on feeling like the odd guy out. ill have to redownload the demo. or rent it. hopefully i will like it and consider it for a budget games after it drops price or all the other games i want for the winter or fall come out and i have them

The truth is JRPG's have always been bringing up the rear in gameplay and storylines. The thing that kept them afloat for so long was that they were easy to pick up and play, and didnt require a serious investment to the game, (as far as learning rules, world lore, and time spent per gameplay session)

Plus they are all console games, so they gained a separate fanbase from the more sophisticated PC RPG's.

WRPG's have owned JRPG's in every area since the beginning, story, gameplay, graphics, character development.

Just look at the games from the oldest stuff, like Bard's Tale and Pool of Radiance, to Baldur's Gate, Planescape:Torment, The Elder Scrolls games, Might and Magic, Ultima, Neverwinter Nights.....

Its not a matter of preference, its a matter of a Role-Playing Game vs. a somewhat interactive leveling simulator, with a linear story thats told to you and you have no control over.

Heres I say: buy a Snes, PSX and PS2 then play all of the JRPGS in these systems then we'll talk.

Heres I say: buy a Snes, PSX and PS2 then play all of the JRPGS in these systems then we'll talk.

Have you played ES? I've played MANY JRPGs and know about basically every battle system done to date I'd say..no I won't name them for you.

Yet you say ES has an original system. When every reviewer and Jrpg fan have said that it borrows its battle system from other games. Your basically the minority including the OP.

If youve really played a many Jrpgs, can you tell me what game had a system where enemies got stronger or weaker depending on the terrain that you battled. Because I feel like you're thinking that Eternal Sonata's light and dark system is original.

You are quite mistaken about the battle system in ES. It is very much original and not all that much like Tales or Star Ocean in any way. The only similar aspect is that you hit the button in real time with the attack..that's all.

Mistaken? errr..... what?! Very much original?

ES feels more like a turnbased except you can move your characters around and you have to be quick about it.
