(Ps4).At the end of last year, there was a feeling that Sony had basked in its good favour long enough, and that it was time to get to work on some of its promises. Turns out that the good favour has lasted another 12 months, and the promises are starting to pile up. 2016's party is going to have to be pretty special.

(Xbone)When all's said and done, Xbox has done its penance; Spencer and his team have earned our renewed trust. It's time for Microsoft's gaming initiative to innovate again, as it did so brilliantly with its first two consoles. And there are encouraging signs that, in 2016, it will do just that.

I think Microsoft has definitely put far more effort in than Sony this year, what with 360 emulation, and a steady stream of new updates, but I also think there is still do much ground to cover by Microsoft to catch up that it makes little difference:

The Xbox still feels slow and clunky when compared to the PS4, it still has installation and blu ray issues. The new ui has really not helped the clunkiness in my eyes, it has become really unintuitive if you want to find anything beyond your most recently used games/apps.

Moreover, Microsoft is still lacking in the upcoming games department, they had to gamble some of their only games to all release in the holiday season, leaving the rest of the year sparse and empty. It's looking like 2016 may be a repeat of this.

Don't get me wrong, like Sony has had their fair share of issues this year, and their lack of effort is becoming very apparent, but when their console is in that much of a better position in the first place, it makes minimal odds just now. We shall see if things change next year.

I think opinion pieces are just that and consumers will buy the product they deem has the most value to them. Period.

I think MS definitely turned things around in 2015, they delivered on what the told gamers for the year and hopefully they'll keep it up in 2016. Sony didn't really do anything to big in 2015 but they didn't have too. They are selling PS4's at a record pace and lived off of 3rd party titles in the holidays and Bloodborne. I expect 2016 to be a bigger year for Sony as far as exclusives and with them stepping into the VR gaming market also, it will be an interesting year for the Playstation that's for sure.

There's a lot more that goes into this then hype

  • PS4 sold very well in 2014. It created a large install base that was buying quite a few games.
  • Multiplayer and always online games are bigger than ever and people will buy the console their friends are playing. Games like Destiny, Rocket League, Call of Duty, Battlefront, Rainbow Six etc all drag whole groups of people into the game and console. There's been a huge boom in online gaming this generation which has oddly not been pointed out often enough, which I believe is because it's either been games with bad rep or indie games doing it. People love ripping on Destiny, Call of Duty, Battlefront etc. but guess what, we're still freaking buying and playing the heck out of these games ... with our friends.
  • Sony's done well with balancing exclusives, remasters, indies and 3rd party deals. We certainly all want to see more exclusives and we will next year. It'll be a big year for gaming across the board.

I remember last Gen when a lot of the Cows were saying that consumers were uninformed and that's why they were buying 360's up. Now the Cows are saying the opposite.

Consumers will largely buy what friends and relatives buy. Right now there are more people buying PS4's based on it's original hype. MS has produced better games than Sony early on but No Corp knows how to create and ride a Hype Train like Sony does.

Well PS4 is on a ROLL in my opinion because SONY, current gen 8 console leader knocked MS the **** out at E3 reveal and saved gaming from MS's attempt to change the gaming industry for their own corporate greed.

While I'm excited about Uncharted 4 as well, I must say I'd be quite sad if my GOTY for next year turns out to be a 10h movie :/

Its going to play the same as past games, if you didn't like those, you wont like this. Me? I loved them and had over 40 hours in SP in last one and got 100% collectables. I'll be doing that again.

I really enjoy my PS4, but Sony really hasn't put much effort into it this year.

Of course that won't stop the steady stampede of Cows into this thread to defend their plastic god.

The most interesting thing is this, Sony would seem poised to pick up steam even more so in 2016 and beyond. They've done exceptionally well with minimal 1st party showing. However, as per their MO, they're going to have a strong 2016 and this will likely carry on year over year the next 3 years or so. They'll most likely see even better sales due to increased support and probable price drops.

This year, MS have been on the ball. It's refreshing.

I'm hoping 2016 will have them both going full tilt, and we'll get some great games to play.

The difference is that Sony has both a history of slow starts in exclusive software each generation along with a history of delivering quality, varied exclusive software over the course every generation. They also support their consoles with exclusive titles until the bitter end (God of War II on PS2 and The Last of Us on PS3 being prime examples).

Sony has built a loyal fanbase and hype for this generation based on their reputation over the last 20 years in the industry. It isn't hype alone.

These MS shill opinion pieces are always entertaining to see.

They say it's hype yet PS4 has more games and higher rated games too than Xbone. Not to mention it runs all the multiplats better. Why wouldn't consumers pick it over a water cooler designed with TV and DRM in mind?

I don't know why anyone is still dumb enough to cry about 'hype' - it does nothing make it painfully obvious that you are nothing more than a butthurt fanboy who can't handle the reality that the gaming world doesn't share your crappy preferences in gaming.

This is the utterly mind-boggling fact that the Xbox fans who are honestly 'shocked' by how Sony is crushing Microsoft in sales refuse to admit to.

Right from the release of the PS1 Sony was the worldwide sales leader month after month right up to the Wii fad hit. For about 3 years or so Nintendo took over but as soon as the Wii fad died off Sony went right back to being the worldwide sales leader right up to the present day.

At the two year mark with the Xbox 360 Microsoft had just be forced to finally admit to the rrod disaster. In the gaming forums it was normal for Xbox 360 owners to already have two or three dead consoles sitting in the junk closet. Even with Microsoft being forced to start paying for replacement Xbox 360 after two years on the market the ridiculous number of other hardware failings of the junk console had Xbox fans buying every new model with promises of the model finally fixing the rrod, the absurdly loud noise from outdated dvd drive, the cheap drive mechanism that was scratching and destroying game discs, and the other motherboard failures that weren't as well know as the rrod.

Any Xbox fan who is honestly shocked by how bad the Xbone is doing has no one to blame but themselves for clinging to the delusion that those massively inflated installed base numbers were going to carry over into this gen. Combine that with the PS4 actually launching 100 dollars cheaper and at the same time instead of 1 year after the Xbox 360 and 200 more expensive.

How can there be Xbox fans who are THAT delusional about how this gen turned out?

I agree. PS4 is just a bad console with alot of shovel ware. Walking simulators are laughable & not games. Movies like Until Boredom/ The Oder are just Movies & lack gameplay & both suck as games lol. No online coop or Mp games unless u want to torture yourself to play Borezone Shadowballs.

Crap games thru out the last 2yrs besides ONE game. Lazy ass ports of ps3 games with missing content & way overpriced. Bad online service which lacks. Driveclub is ugly for example with bad reviews & not worth a ps4 or the hype at all even after the long delay lol.

Delays out the ass. I got a ps4 at black friday at $299 with free shit. Got it for Uncharted 4 but its delayed for 5 weeks longer lol. Ugh i should of known and just not bought a ps4. Well i hope SF5 has something long lasting and hope it has a story mode cuz if not the game will die out fast with only 16 characters. Horizon will most likely get delayed . Thats a given lol.

I think I detected a few bitter tears in that post...

In other words, the Sky is blue, the Xbox One has better games and better games to look forward to in 2016. Sony fans know deep down that Horizon will flop, SFV will eventually go multiplat and Uncharted is going to flop since it's pretty much Uncharted 3.5 and the multiplayer will be a disaster

Quantum Break, Scalebound, ReCore and Crackdown pretty much obliterate the entire Playstation 4 lineup. Scalebound and QB will score 9's and possible a 10 while Uncharted and Horizon will score 7-8. Anyone with an ounce of objectivity would say the same thing, but Playstation can't see the truth because Sony's stomach is always in the way

Uncharted 4 alone will outscore and outsell all of those combined. Recore and Scalebound will be 2 of the worst selling games of 2016 period.

Yeah uncharted 4 will definitely outsell those three games combined, but I wouldn't say it's impossible for one of the games listed by that user to outscore Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4 does have the disadvantage of being the 4th game in a series that has had games developed since 2007 unlike those three games which are all new IP's. Uncharted 4 has to impress reviewers a lot to score high which I think is definitely possibly because of Naughty Dog pedigree.

'for Xbox 360 owners to already have two or three dead consoles sitting in the junk closet.'

after 2 years?

what a crock of shit quite frankly why don't you turn on your common sense chip for a moment.

the xbox 360 came with a 1 year warranty if it broke in it's first year you got it replaced for free if it broke after that you bought new one, and heres the kicker, that comes with another years warranty so after 2 years the most you would have is 2 dead consoles you fool.

did you attend maths lessons at school?

the first one you bought had a one year warranty so you are already at the end of the first year when it expires if you have to buy a new one that will come with another years warranty so when the warranty expires from that it's the two year mark.

theres no need to say anymore you have shot your own credibility to hell with a dumb statement like that.

Yeah Eurogamer, try to remember that next time you make a mountain out of every Digital Foundry analysis skewed to suck Sony's dick, funny enough when Xbox had a clear edge over PS4 on the DMC: DE, Digital Foundry's damage control was that the differences were - largely academic and only noticeable when zooming in on still shots - that's like every analysis they do!

Don't be butthurt that no one will care about Quantum Break now that Uncharted 4 is slated to release in the same month. It will score higher and probably 4 or 5 times as much. The bullet time gimmick has gotten stale.

I'm not butthurt. dumbass, I have Uncharted 4 preordered. lol!! Everything you say is a JOKE though. Uncharted 4 won't do anything to the XB1 and neither will SFV. Quantum Break is still one of the most anticipated XB1 exclusive for 2016. Nothing Sony does will change that or how it will sell. You're just a biased fool.

It is true. Wait wait wait wait until e3, wait until tgs, wait until the end of the year, wait until the next e3, wait wait wait is all we get. Waiting from season to conference to year(s) is all we do. While they delay and show us the same games for years... This gen is garbage.

Xbox One is about to take some serious body blows with SFV and Uncharted 4 releasing in the first half on 2016. The domination will be even worse this year. And no Quantum Break will not be a sufficient counter to Uncharted 4.

You're officially the joke of the day.

Don't be butthurt that no one will care about Quantum Break now that Uncharted 4 is slated to release in the same month. It will score higher and probably 4 or 5 times as much.

I'm going to laugh hard when Uncharted 4 flops for being essentially Uncharted 3.5 and gets an 8 here like Last of Fail did

2016 is going to be another dark year for the Sony Ponies, let the damage controlling commence

The Xbox One is dead everywhere except the US and UK.

Developers and publishers are as expected increasingly dropping support for the dying console.

Sony's dominant first party combined with massive third party support from all three major console regions: Japan, the US, and Europe will continue to crush the Xbox One's pathetic first party and dwindling third party support.

Microsoft and Xbox fan attempts at damage control over the crap Xbox One graphics hardware: secret unrevealved graphics chips, 'the Cloud!!!', magic SDK updates are nothing but a joke and most Xbox One owners have switched to the 'we never cared about shallow things like graphics' rationalization.

The Xbox One has only sold 15 million consoles after two years which puts it almost exactly at the same sales rate the first Xbox marketplace failure had with 24.5 million consoles over 3.5 years.

Desperation price cuts, double game bundling, and massive amounts of money thrown at retailers to try to move the unwanted Xbox One units have done nothing to help sales.

The Shiny Green Power Ranger can't even get large numbers of Xbox fans to buy Microsoft's kiddie fps anymore.

Xbox fans looking for their Retarded Messiah 'Phil' to save the Xbox One are setting themselves up for nothing but bitter disappointment. Phil is the clown who just blew two billion dollars on the Fing Minecrafter developer. Boggle.

The only question left for the Xbox One disaster is how long before Microsoft dumps the system.

Everyday i find full lobbies when i go online and people are chatting having fun,. Your post is what i experience everyday haha.

I guess MS should pull the plug your insider knowledge is amazing. MS is ahead of Sony with gaming revenues in 2015 -.. Sony may catch up next year?

Of course MS is ahead in gaming revenue, they know how to turn a profit, Sony is ran by morons. It's ironic because 99% of Sony fans are also morons.

I am honestly sick of people praising MS for making the changes they did, sure give them a nod but the way people idolize them is pathetic. They didn't do it for your benefit the X1 would have bombed hard otherwise. Everything that went wrong with X1 was MS's own doing but some Xfans blame sony fans for bashing the console as is their right as Xfans dished it out last gen. X1 and MS are not victims.

Sony have been coasting by but have they had to take extreme measures to make their console desirable? No they came out strong with a message that appealed to gamers. All I want from PS4 is good games, few apps here and there seems everyone else wants it to be a media machine rather than a gaming machine.

The PS4 is not selling on hype alone there are many factors of why things sell, if I was as stupid as people are being here I would say X1 is selling on brand loyalty and corporate shills.

Yeah people praise M$ for changing everything but that's because they fucked everything up to begin with and spent 2 years fixing everything they botched at launch. Sony actually released a good system from the start and it will always be more powerful.

The only thing M$ has actually done better than Sony this gen is offer true BC instead reselling old games. I'll give them props for that. Other than that PS4 is better in every conceivable way.

Why are people so obsessed with how a mere piece of hardware sells or not? It's not like most of us get any share of the money either of the hardware manufacturers.

Uncharted is a bit stale as well tho. The game looks good but the same thing a forth time around is just not that exciting.

@GreySeal9: When it wins GOTY you will see how stale it is.
