I think you will find that these are the most hardcore games this gen. Graphics, Survival Horor, First Person Shooter, Strategy, RPG, Sandbox, Post Apocalypse.

Crysis - Most hardcore graphics (Germany)

Amnesia Dark Descent - Most hardcore survival horror (Sweden)

The Witcher - Most Hardcore RPG (Poland)

Battlefield Bad Company 2 - Most hardcore shooter (Sweden)

Grand Theft Auto 4 - Most hardcore Sandbox (United Kingdom)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Most hardcore Post Apocalyptic (Ukraine)

Medieval 2 Total War - Most hardcore strategy game (United Kingdom)

Europe owns your asses. This is what you get when you leave us out of discussion. Discuss.

Ok.... BC2 is not the most hardcore shooter. That's laughable. Total War is really dry for an RTS too. Medieval II was something, but they are getting more and more simplified as they go along. The Witcher is not a hardcore RPG. At all. It's an action RPG.

Let me guess. The most hardcore shooter is either Halo or Call of Duty? The most hardcore RPG is Bethesda (since that is all Americans have got to argue).

First of all, Bethesda is a developer, not a game.

2nd - So you're saying the only good shooters that came out this gen are BC2,Halo and CoD?

Bethesda is the only RPG studio worth mentioning in America. Battlefield Bad Company 2 is way more hardcore than your Halo's and your COD's.

Armed Assault II? Red Orchestra? As for RPG's, i have no clue. Drakensang, maybe.

Did you just replace best with most hardcore? Because otherwise that doesn't make sense at all.

How about TF2? I think it's better than BC2, same for HL2 Ep2.

Some of the biggest "hardcore" games have come out of europe.

And i lol at TW being a dry RTS...

Besides "hardcore" is a term the uber geeky lot made up to feel more good bout themselves since gaming became a more accesible market for everyone since the advent of modern home consoles after the 16bit gen me thinks.

America makes some quite good games, but they are not the superpower of the games industry that they think they are. Also it really annoys me when they compare themselves to one member of the European Union. That's like me comparing the whole UK games industry to North Dakota's.

i was born in 91 so i grew up with the megadrive, but this zomg harcore gaeming nonsense is laughable...thought it was supposed to be an enjoyable thing (sure some games are being toned down, but in some cases more streamlined means better overall gameplay from certain standpoints and makes the game more freeflowing).

I was born just over 5 years before you, the reason we had old computers in the house was because most of our money was spent on musical instruments and not videogame consoles. Hardcore gaming really refers to the indie scene that rose after the crash, but nowadays it is used to refer to a game which is as good as casual games but does not fit into that bracket.

There are great developers on all sides of the world. Given that you are part of an international medium your patriotism is misguided at best (as it is for all those folks claiming the opposite of your stance). Who is more "hardcore" then who as far the gaming world is concerned is a ridiculous pissing match...

You'd be right in that European developers tend to make deeper and more complex games than U.S. ones, although some of your game choices are off (Medieval II: Total War is FAR from the most hardcore game this generation). However, the U.S. has Obisidan, and no one around today makes better Western RPGs than they do. The Witcher's good, but it isn't "as" good in roleplaying terms as, say, New Vegas.

The console term "Hardcore" is used by teenagers and ignorant young adults to make themselves feel mature by playing games with "Curse Words" and "Blood"

By even using the term Hardcore, it makes them sound very immature...

All crap about hardcore aside, I do think Europe generally produces the most interesting games this year. Especially when it comes to first person shooters, Europe is the place to be this gen.

All weird and/or complex games are almost always Eastern Bloc. It's why Dragon Rising is so bad. It's British. You can't replicate true "Russian"-ness.
