no joke. (okay so its not really a game, but a technological experiment)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.kkrieger

the game is entirelly procedurally generated, so it only takes up 96k....if It were done in normal form...the game would take up 300MB.

Kinda kills the whole Idea of "Blue Ray is needed"...Hell, you dont even need DVD storage with games like this...you could run all these games off of Floppies.

Im gonna go download this....I really want to see what its like.

my understanding...is that its essencially a tech demo, for this technology they have...and not designed to really be a game it self.

apparently the game itself is an extreamly basic shooter....

Still, its in Beta, and Im gonna try it out when I have time.

its on the list of games using that same procedure, apparently it has been around for a long time, cause it was used in star control.

great achievement, but i still prefer it when artists create each individual detail in a game

good examples are GTA, Metroid Prime, Zelda TP .. the detail is amazing and really adds to the atmosphere

all of those have pretty sad graphics compared to all the other games coming out, and to that game he showed.

This "game" incredibly old. About two years... Also, it doesn't look vetter than GeoW. Not Crysis. It looks great, yeah, but it doesn't surpass the U3 engine or the CryEngine 2.

Like others said, great achievement, but it still doesn't look better than Gears, or even Resistance. And just because the textures look amazing, doesn't mean everything else doesn't suck big time.

But still to get that all into 96kb? Very impressive though, that can't be denied.

This doesnt have anything to do with Compression...Everything in this game, is generated by the CPU, rather then pre-made by artists....including audio.

Like I said, the gameplay is horrible. However, the gameplay isn't the issue here. Its the graphical achievement. This game is a clear indicator that Blu-ray is not needed.

Kkrieger doesn't use any compression, cept the one that packed the code into .exe eg. a compiler. Why this game demonstration uses so little space is simple (to explain). Everything in that game is procedurally generated, from textures, models, levels - this means that the levels, weapons, textures, lighting don't exsist until you tun the .exe file, then everything is generated.

It's an awesome method, but it's way to hard to programm something like this decently - or better yet, the time to money investment is not yet there. It will be fun in the future tho :).

Yeah it sure is impressive, I've been using procedural synthesis in arguements about BR vs. DVD9 for a while. And considering sooner or later MS is going to put it into XNA to the point where all 360 games would be compressed like .kkrieger I think the 360 might be able to go back to using CD-ROMs for the 360 in a year or two.

In order to fill up a standard DVD-9 disk...you would have to use 65,000 Copies of this game....thats how impresive this technology is.

I remember hearing about this game a year or so ago so it's not exactly new. This and Spore are two of the main games pushing precedural generation, I've yet to check it out, so i can't attest to it looking better than Gears or not but it seems interesting, perhaps I'll give it a look.

Okay, just finished playing the game (yeah, it's over quickly) and I can safely say that this isn't anywhere near as good looking as Gears. There are some decent textures here and there but the visuals are as a whole unimpressive compared to Gears and the games I'm accustomed to playing.

The gameplay is archaic, reminicent of FPS games circa 1995. With the proper polish, this could be impressive, but as a whole, it looks and plays like a glorified tech demo. But then again, that's all it's meant to be so I can't really fault it there.

Painkiller is almost devoud of graphical effects, the strength lies in its EXCELLENT texture work, either way, HL2 on an FX looks very similar

Why do people even make threads like this? It's obvious, QUITE obvious that Gears of War is possibly the best-looking released game to date. That .kkrieger game is, well...NOT!
