I on the contrary think the controls are what made it what it was.

RE2 is still the best game in the series. Back then it wasn't a shooter, it was a survival horror.

Now it's a shooter, like nearly every other game nowadays...

Who cares if it wasnt the same as the others? The game ended up becoming one of the best games of all time, and I disagree, RE4 was easily the best in the RE series.

Bah, Code Veronica and REmake were better. But I agree. The old one's had the atmosphere, puzzles, and story. Granted the controls and inventory needed fixing, they ruined everythikng else besides it.

I honestly wish they had continued on with what they were doing in that video--and simply gave us the new aiming system and whatever other new gameplay mechanics. The atmosphere in that video felt really nostalgic--I loved it. Atleast they could have just put that in the current RE4 game as Leon's "dream sequence" or something while he was riding in the car at the begining--it would have been a good and realistic way to close out the old, knowing that memories of everything he had or might of experienced haunted him abit. It's human nature that it would anyway.

That looks like crap.

Seriously, the best part of RE4 was the gameplay, that gameplay is similar to that of the old RE games, which are crappy.

those bad controls may have been a problem

But way better puzzles
More challanging boss fights
Better monsters
Actual horror atmosphere

THe only thing the new Resident Evil did better was gunplay and overall gameplay, and visuals/audio and such.

The older games were still better in atmosphere, puzzles, and challange.

How can anyone possibly say that the old RE games were bad? Sure, the controls took some getting used to, but seriously, they were some of the best games on the PS1.

Either that, or they are the lot of people who jumped into video games because of the FPS invasion, and like to call themselves "hardcore gamers", despite everreally playing video games prior to the release of the PS2/Xbox...

In your opinion? No, that's not even necessary to say. It's a fact!(well ok not really)--but "Resident Evil: Code Veronica" was and still is the true masterpiece among "Resident Evil" games in my eyes. At one point, I thought it was Resident Evil 4 without the actual "4" in the title before I learned what a side game truely was.

CV was great, but I never got to play it thoroughly so I don't really have a solid opinion on it...

The reason I like RE2 is because it was the game that got me into survival horrors, and led me to other great games in the genre like Silent Hill and Clock Tower.

My my, we sure do love making wild assumptions don't we?

Have you ever thought that maybe there is a certain group of gamers out there who played and enjoyed the older titles, and played and enjoyed Resident Evil 4, and simply like 4 more than the others because of its own merits?

I mean, I'll be the first to admit that RE4 really was not all that scary, but it was a step in the direction of emergent horror gameplay, and it was a fantastic, well paced action-horror game.

Sure, it may not be as good of a pure horror game as the previous REs, but when looked at on its own merits, I'd say that it's easily the best game game in the series, regardless of its lack of scary moments.

Yeah, but that version is too supernatural.lancea34

I believe that's why they changed it. It had too much in common with Silent Hill. They should've just changed the enemies, and the environments to reflect a more "RE"-esque atmosphere and kept the survival-horror elements. RE4 was more of a spinoff than an actual entry in the series. RE5 looks to be continuing down that path as well, seeing as RE4 despite not being a survival-horror (and effectively killing off the genre according to some critics, see IGN) received tons of praise and casual success.

Maybe RE5 will at least give us the survival elements that other great titles like STALKER integrate so well into the core gameplay. I highly doubt it'll give us the horror part of the genre though.

I was never a fan of RE before 4 because it was such a pain to play. The controls were terrible (or at least felt terrible next to 4), the voice acting was lauphable, and sure, the game lost a lot of the survival horror aspect, but in exchange, you still got a way better and pretty awesome game.

Meh, RE4 was a decent game on it's own, but it suffered from laughable voice acting, a more laughable script, and an even worse story that pretty much trashed all previous canonical content that the other games had built up. It basically streamlined everything for the less patient, dealt away with the survival and the horror elements of previous entries, and offered a then-stunning presentation as well as top-notch graphics.

The controls were not terrible, that's opinion based. The cheesy voice acting is part of RE, and personally, I don't think I got something better, I got an awesome game, that's for sure, but I got the worst RE game which was bastardized completely of it's roots.

The controls were basically the same in four the only thing they changed were the annoying camera angles and the prerendered backgrounds

and the aiming of-course

I personally think that the scares in a RE game should come from the story, the atmosphere and the creatures. NOT in the sense of powerlessness your given by having awful controls. Lets apply YOUR philosophy to RE5 reverting to the "remote control car" scheme and make it even "better" by having the controler automatically eject from the port during key momments while you frantically jump from your chair spilling cheetohs everywhere trying to plug the cord back in while zombies eat your character's face. What an "improvement" that would be:P

The industry and fans clamored for better controls ever since 2 and when they made this HUGE improvement in 4 it was met with comercial and critical success. Naturally there are those fueled more by nostalgia then common sense who think the awful old controls were better. Go figure.

4 was the best and I think 5 might top it.

Finally I find more people that realize that RE:CV>>>>>>>Every other RE.

cv was fantastic, however, i actually like re3 the best. 3 has pretty much always been seen as a fans delight, and i'd have to agree with that. but i loved everything about it

though, cv featured Wesker's glorious return. Though I'm still sore that during my first play through I accidentally left the friggin fire extinguisher in one of those metal detector boxes, so later on in the game in artic when you needed it to put out that fire to reach the magnum, I couldnt. :(

Looks awful so I'm glad they changed it. Those old controls are scary only because of how annoying they are, they don't do anything good for the atmosphere.

no, he hasnt. he lost the internet. lost big time

how can a story scare you? Answer: It can't

you need to feel immersed. Trick yourself into thinking you're right there with the character, walking through the horror. Thats something RE4 failed to do. Failed big.
