Been console and pc gaming for over 3 decades and never had a console game fail to start (besides blowing in Nes carts)

Now I have had a handful of pc games do this over the years. Last night it happened with gal civ 3... and I meet all the requirements and have all drivers updated etc... gets to splash screen and is stuck in a ever loading loop. So I am out money on this one unless I can find a patch, hack or fix.

It got me thinking, I never dealt with this on console. People complain about halo mcc, driveclub and a unity and call them broken... well at least those games loaded and you could play single player.

So system wars have you ever bought a console game, only to get home and find out it won't load?

I occassionally get an error on the X1 saying that there was an error took to long to start so I have to hard reset the console to get it to start. When I called MS about it, they said the problem isn't widespread enough for a recall so I'd have to pay to send my console in, but they said it should be fixed with the Windows 10 update launching later this year.

Also, I had a 360 scratch a game to an unplayable state the first day I bought the game. (Mass Effect 1 actually)

My PS3 wouldn't run CoD: BO2 and I had to buy a slim to get it to work (wanted it anyways) but then that corrupted my hdd and it would constantly freeze the machine. It's a well known problem with BO2 on PS3 and it comes up if you google it. To this day, if I play BO2 on my PS3 it freezes the machine and makes it go through the checking your hdd screen, and on more than one occassion, it corrupted my data and I had to reformat the hdd and redownload all my game saves off the cloud. THIS GAME PISSED ME OFF LIKE NO OTHER GAME IN HISTORY, BUT IT'S WHAT MY FRIENDS WANT TO PLAY.

I know these are different than what you are talking about, but do any of these count?

The only time I´ve had the problem of the console freezing or not loading is with KZ3 in my PS3, I don´t know what the hell is wrong with that game because it´s the only game in my entire PS3 collection that gives me trouble ( about 40% of the times I try to play ), actually I´m afraid of the damn thing, it gives my PS3 indigestion, other than that I have never had any problems with consoles.

@iambatman7986: actually yeah some would if u couldn't play it when you got the game. It's really annoying, especially when you are looking forward to playing something new. I never had it happen on console which is why I am curiois.

PC is really different than consoles, with consoles there is only one machine everyone has to develop for, so if the game doesnt work on that machine everyone is screwed. With pc a game can work on one pc and not the other, since they are different specs.

@speedfreak48t5p: thing is all those "broken" games still load. And u can play single player. Having a few bugs or some multiplayer portion server pro lems doe not make a game broken, just buggy.. having a game that won't even boot, that is broken.

Hmm can't seem remember the last pc game that was not launching. Maybe I am just lucky.

Or maybe I am just a cheap hack who buys every game on sale with all the updates. :P

@lord_magikarp: I get that all pcs are different. I've run into this before, but usually I can find a fix.

For gal civ 3, I got the game to boot one time, it got to the intro video and then the menu. I had to alt tab to do something real quick and I come back to the game and all the ui fonts are missing. So I turn off the game thinking that alt tab screwed it. I try to boot and now it never gets past the splash screen.

It's not my machine when ui fonts go away from alt tabbing, or when it launches one time bit never again. The game is obviously horribly coded. And remembering their last game on release elemental, I'm not wrong.

an odd thing happaned with my wiiu.

MK8 disc in the drive. i launch MK8 from the quick launch menu and it just got stuck on the wiiu screen. i had to hold the power button down. it only happened once mind.

other than that no. it really would be a new low if a console game was released that wouldnt start at all....or even wouldnt start until you download a day one patch. its fixed hardware..there would be no excuse for it.

Had it happen on my 360 a ton for about 6 months before it finally crapped out. Did you try playing Skyrim on the PS3? :P

Whats your comps specs? Are you sure you're running 64 bit windows?

My desktop has had no problems playing but neither my work nor laptop can get it to run and they can run most strategy games at low levels.

Only PC problem I've had in the last two gens was getting Mass Effect 1 to start for the first time. Turns out running it as admin got it working.

Between the Wii U, PS3, 360 and the short time I had a PS4 I never any problems outside of network issues (looking at you PS3). Xbox One arrives from Amazon later on this week, so we'll see

I have had a few errors like that on Xbone. The machine freezes or just exits out. I just turn the machine off and try again and that usually works. Not exactly like a PC game not working, but that's a more recent experience.

Same.

I also had a few issues long ago with the NES and Genesis.

Yup, during the ps1 era. Even my cousins thought that mashing the Triangle button would start every game flawlessly. We were wrong.

yeah, on old Nintendo (NES), take game cartridge out, blow on the metal contacts, reinsert, more times than I can count

for some reason my Xbox 360's couldn't read RE5 for some weird reason, then I had to do a cache clear and they worked fine

I only had one defective production game that couldn't play, for Forced Unleash, which was a bad game by itself, I paid a few bucks to get it replaced and the game sucked anyways.

Had all the cartridge systems. But you blew on the cartridge and then it worked. Try that on a PC game, see if it works.

To be honest, consoles really don't have an excuse. The hardware is all the same so there really shouldn't be issues of incompatibility or other issues that causes games to crash. On the PC the source of your hardware can come from any of dozens of different manufacturers and multitudes of combinations of configurations can be a real challenge to overcome.

One of my favorite things about PC gaming is that it isn't a static experience, you can drastically change the way a game looks and plays over the course of time, consoles can't do that.

To answer the question though, not really.

on consoles never. Of the 5 or 6 PC games I have played 2 crashed on startup. One of them was MGSV GZ and this was a very widespread issue, so you can't blame me for doing anything wrong.

I also had some PS1 and PS2 games quit working because of so many scratches. A handful were too far gone even when I used a scratch removal kit. Of course, that also applies to my old PC games.

I've played an NES and Atari 2600 before.

I can't think of a modern console game that straight up wouldn't start on me. There is a reason why the big 3 have really long QA periods required for launches.

When a PC game doesn't start for me it's 99% my own fault. The only exception so far has been Games for Windows Live. Luckily that is dead and the nightmare is behind us.

Yes Our Spectrum was a nightmare! Took ages to load a game in the first place and 20% of the time you would have to start over. Few cartridge games of course but cleaning them fixed them. The only PC games I've had not work are old ones that aren't compatible with newer versions of Windows. A bit of knife and forking gets them working though.

Only because of the cartridge needing to be 'cleaned', and another time because the GCN disc was scratched too badly (never loan out your games, btw).

Plenty. Back in cartridge days, had to turn off Consoles and let it cool down for it to work again. Otherwise it used to show strange blocks/artifacts/colors on screen. Newer games require to you update to work properly. PC gaming on other hand is different than Console gaming. PCs are backward compatible. You can play Civ 3 on your latest PC but you can't play PS2 games on PS4. Yes, some games cause problems when you try to run them on current PCs but there are always quick fixes for that. It takes 5 minutes to fix those problems.

Recently I was playing Warcraft 3 and its cutscenes weren't working correctly. It felt like Gamma is on maximum or something. Typed in google "Warcraft 3's color problem in cutscene on Windows 7" and after few milliseconds there was a fix to open properties of the icon and check "Disable desktop composition" option. Tried it and it worked. Had a lot of fun with both Reign of Chaos and The Frozen Throne. On Consoles I wouldn't have been able to play that old game on my current Console or had to wait for official fix.

Assassin's Creed IV did this to me. Turned out PhysX was the culprit and kept crashing my game, I turned it down to normal and everything was dandy.

For Consoles I don't remember the last time I bought a game and it turned out to be a dud and I had to go get a new one. I wanna say ODST but that didn't work because the Xbox 360 was a dud.

Also OP are you using Windows 7 32bit or 64bit?

@Midnightshade29:

You must have not played a lot of games in the 8/16bit era. NES was notorious for have connection issues, and renting often showed wear on carts. I've probably had more startup issues on the NES alone than that of pc in my lifetime.

Not on the ps4. Other than hardware failures preventing loading (blue ray drive) the only other game on the ps3 that wouldn't load was mass effect. (funny that ain't it, from a Dev with what used to be a very close affiliation with Ms)
