We all know the PS3 is selling well below expectations right now. That got me thinking: Every companies 3rd console I can think of has always been the one that winds up being the black sheep.
Nintendo with their 64. By far the worst console they've ever released, and fittingly the worst selling console they've ever produced. Nintendo was NOTHING for awhile because of it.
Sega with their Saturn. I think something like 12 people bought this system. It was really bad, it sort of killed their cred (what little they had).
And now Sony with their PS3. Where's the games? Is this thing going down for real? I hope not, the Wii doesn't have the graphics, and the 360 is also technically inferior to the PS3 and dosen't have the uniqueness of the Wii. Good lord, this is starting to look real bad.
But anyway, this seems to be following a trend. Ever notice it's the 3rd system that winds up testing a companies willingness to stay in the game?
Mainstream video games pretty much started with the NES. The NES won, then the SNES, then the PS1, then the PS2 and then the ??? And it also seems like Microsoft is filling in Segas shoes, ie always finishing #2 or 3 and finally bowing out.

You might actually be right. I'm going to do some research to try prove myself wrong. But I'll throw in soem random speculation here: If the N64 did outsell the GC, it was because of alot of people buying it based on the excellence of the NES and SNES. The N64 didn't entice too many repeat customers when the GC hit.

N64 had things GC didn't. MArio 64 - Multimillion selling game , first ever 3D platform. OoT- Higest rated game eveer, Goldeneye, revolutionary console FPS. Don't credit N64's sales due to SNES/NES. It had the defining 3D games in which made the way for games today. It still sold 32 million units with only a 1/6 of PS1'slibrary of games, it sold 1/2 of PS1 in U.S and was very succesful here.
I think of it like this: if you keep climbing the mountain of success, eventually the clouds are going to distort your view of the rocks that allowed you to make the climb.
In other words, the ones on top lost sight of what got them on top, and then they paid for it.

Be realistic. The PS3 will begin to show it's age by 2009 at the latest, and by 2011 the PS4 will be either out or already announced and preparing for launch.
Ya you guy were right, the N64 out sold the GC by about 10 million units. Ok, I was wrong. I should've done the research on that one before just going on what me & my friends have always thought. But that's not really the main point. The main point is that the 64 hurt Nintendo's market share. And hurt it BADLY. In other words: The 3rd time wasn't a charm.

The 64 wasn't the worst selling home console from Nintendo, the GC was. And it being "the worst" is entirely your own opinion. In mine it was their best.
The N64 was horrible, it was the reason why I got a PS1. I just hated that controller and the cartridges. In my opinion the GC was far better than the N64, the GC had a really nice controller. THE CUBE IS THE REASON WHY I CAME BACK TO NINTENDO!

Yes that was my opinion. Thanks for noticing, and pointing that out. :p But i do apoligise for my mistake on the sales figures, and this will be my last post regarding my mistake in that department. And just so you know, I only threw that in (abou the N64 sucking) because I love to watch the people on this board squirm when someone says the N64 sucked. But it's my real opinion, and I just can't see how someone could call it one of the best systems ever. There's no way anyone could ever convince me that by mentioning the same 4 or 5 games over and over. lol And the controller...I'll pass. Sorry guys.

12 years? Are you kidding me? Even PS2, which has been out on the market for a long time, has only been around for 7 years, and I am sorry, but it is nearing the end of its life and it won't last another year at most. 8 years is a lot less then 12. You are talking about two console generations buddy. :lol:

No, N64 is a god among systems and after reading that statement I can no longer respect you.

N64 was Nintendo's best! and it sold atleast 30 million, while GC only sold like 22 million..chicken008
But the NES sold 60 Million, and the SNES sold 45 or 54 Million, so in terms of Sales the N64 was when Nintendo dropped the ball and they didn't get back from that until now.
Technically the Saturn was Sega's 4th (or 5th*) system. It goes like this:
SG-1000
SG-1000 Mark III* (Depends on if you call it a new system, an upgrade to the SG-1000 or the Japanese incarnation of the Master System)
Sega Master System
Sega Genesis / Sega Mega Drive
Sega Saturn
Dreamcast
Sega never had a 3rd console curse since they're 3rd console is either the Master System or Genesis and neither did badly.

And I thought that only I and Panzer_Zwei would have known about the SG-1000. Also, to address the OP's comment on the Saturn sucking, that only applies to the half-assed marketing job here in America and possibly Europe. The Saturn actually did pretty well in Japan, and some of its better titles were Japanese exclusives.

Good call there-before that title, hardly anyone even knew of the GTA franchise. It did a nice job transitioning from overhead perspective to third-person, though I still do miss GTA2's feature of letting you get guns, mines, etc. strapped on to your car if you had the cash. Unfortunately, for every GTA III, we tend to get disasters like SC3, MoO3, etc.
There was nothing wrong with the Saturn, it had a nice userbase; as did the N64.
Not all consoles have the same situations for their success/failure; there is no trend, just coincidence imo.
