Most of you here are too young to remember these classics and grew up in the psx era. If it weren't for this, the game industry would probably be non-existent or at the least, no where near the level it is now.

it did... in the USA and in consoles only, to the rest of the world and to PC gaming things were fine and dandy, also the NEs was the first to save simply bacause it got there first, the master system could´v done the same, i´m not going to mention the Atari 7800 because i still dont know how powerfull that thing is, i´v heard that it was weaker than the nes, i´v also heard that was stronger than the nes but games were always rushed so i´m not going to comment on that one

Nearly flawless systems like the NES and SNES, and their wonderfully memorable games, are the reasons that people are upset with Nintendo these days.

Coulda swore the NES saved the videogame industry from the slump that video games fell into when people started to get bored of the Atari 2600.KeeperofDingo

Bingo. Although "people started to get bored" is a bit of an understatement.

This thread is not merely about who came first. Nintendo entered the scene at a time when evaporated public interest and mass corporate bankruptcy had turned video games into a liability, and they started a renaissance for the industry that has not ended since.

Whether you personally think their products are sub-par today is not the point. Detractors in this thread seem to want to have it both ways: Nintendo weren't important then because games already existed, and they're not important now because games have improved since then.

To use an extreme example, I can point out that Magna Carta was instituted hundreds of years before the American Revolution, and use that to dismiss the Constitution as "unoriginal", completely ignoring the fact that the document's principles had long since been eroded and that a revolution was needed to to reinstate, elaborate, improve and secure them.

Or, I could undermine the revolution the opposite way by pointing out that the original incarnation of the Constitution failed to abolish slavery and grant women's suffrage, ignoring the fact that such Amendments could not be made if the Constitution never existed to begin with.

Both points are nonsensical, contradictory to each other, and fail at their goal of negating the Constitution's importance. Ditto goes for these arguments against Nintendo. If you want to trash Nintendo based on their current-gen console, you have the rest of the SW forum in which to do so.

Atari helped popularize gaming in the 80s, but they also helped KILL gaming more completely than any other company before or since. Nintendo may not have been the first overall, but they ARE the first to have both success AND longevity.

Bread_or_Decide

Despite that, the N64 still sold, what, 35 million systems? The SNES before it sold 49 million, so it wasn't a huge drop like with Atari.

Dropping 25% in sales, I don't call that "killing" gaming. Selling 500,000 systems a month one generation then selling only 100,000 systems a month the next, THAT is "killing gaming."

Are you kidding, the N64 was a great machine. It had by far the largest AAA and AA game releases ratio by any system, and many of the greatest games of that generation.

They started it, but Atari just about killed it, too. I think that balances out any "thanks" I should give them.

As for PCs, PCs just rawk. Plain and simple. But no single company can be credited for PC gaming the way Nintendo can be credited for console gaming.

#1 Atari started the industry but they also almost killed it. The Atari 7800 was a major flop and console sales went into rapid decline.

#2 What I stated about pcs is totally true. Go read some wikipedia or some other encylopedia.

1. They "killed" gaming as you said because there was no official seal of aproval so anything made for the atari 2600 goes kinda like what nintendo does now (see what i did there) also it wasnt for atari you wouldn have your precious nintendo the problem with atari is that it was too stuck on old technologies. its like saying 1920´s movies sucked because they didnt had any voices and so they killed the movie industry, they led the way to what games are now you ingrate. Also People wanted the next generation and the atari 7800 was always being put off so my question is, why didnt its competition step up to dethrone atari? the only reason people blame atari for the video game crash is because atari was the only company that really gave a damn about videogames where was your nintendo during the 2600 and the 5200 era?

2.ANYONE could program of PC´s back then which was a major plus, and they were more cerebral with their text adventures, AKA interactive fiction, but hey if thats not your thing then you would´v been the perfect HALO fan if it existed back in the day

NOne of that matters. The fact remains Atari killed the industry and pc was very rare in those days. Does not change those facts.

I think you're missing the point. We DO thank Atari for bringing us gaming. But we also CONDEMN Atari for nearly killing it. The two balance each other out. But we don't have anything to hold against Nintendo, other than a few numbskull choices in the mid-90s (cartridges only, Virtual Boy, etc.) which, in the end, were insignificant little asides in the console race. The fact that they REstarted the gaming dynasty, the same dynasty which continues today in a straight and unbroken line for twenty years from NES -> SNES -> PS1 -> PS2 -> PS3/360/Wii, should be enough to warrant our thanks. Every console today can be traced directly to the NES as the common convergence point.

yes it is, and its just wrong, Atari didnt kill gaming, the lack of competition did, where was your nintendo during the 2600 or the 5200 era? Atari started the gaming genre but it didnt had any real competition and when the company started doing mistakes (like all company´s including nintendo and sony) the gaming market failed simply because atari was really the only gaming company in the world

also as for PC games, did you not read my post ANYONE could make pc games back then, the diference is they weren´s advertised and for the most part they werent sold in stores, they were sold in parallel markets

also you dont need to be a genius to know that nintendo saved the industry simply because they were the first to arrive had the sega master system arrived before then the master system would´v been the NES, why? because it was decent competition
