I just think to myself how they're actually bashing themselves because lets be honest, non-gamers like easy to pickup games that lack depth and challenge.  Then they sit here and defend their current game library......whatttt?

No those were casuals, almost the same thing, casuals are non-gamers that have started to game. Basically all they played was Madden and GTA

The thing is, once youve got non-gamers hooked, many may become hardcore gamers, we just dont know. there has never been such a big number of non-gamers take up gaming before.

non-gamers made the ps1/2 #1. that lead to more games being on the ps1/2. not just small games.

I think we need to draw the line between non-gamers (housewives, grandparents, and other people who might occasionally play snake on their cell-phone) and casuals (people who bought a PS2 to play Madden and GTA3).

No offense, but I don't really buy that.  I have plenty of friends who happen to female at the college I go to who just love The Sims.  They can't get enough.  However they're not usually knocking on my door to play some co-op Halo or whatever.

Do you know what a non-gamer is?  Non-gamers are people that dont have time for games that are large on depth and time consumption.  They want quick easy things.....examples: WarioWare Smooth Moves,  Super Monkey Ball, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Cooking Mama, Mario Party, Elebits, Wii Sports, Trauma Center.....

All quick simple quirky games that lack real depth.......

I don't play the Halo either, but you can't say that even one of them might not get interested in something beyond the Sims. I never liked the Sims, either, on that note. So, because they play a game, there is a chance they will experiment and try another, basically. (Unless you're my roommate, in which case you just play WoW every moment you aren't asleep or at work  )

Even if one of them did...it doesnt mean the developers are going to assume one of them did and make a Halo type game for the Wii.....Theyre going to go with what Nintendo markets the Wii as...and thats a simple, fun, easy to get into system.....none of which describes games like Mass Effect, Halo, Metal Gear Solid or Oblivion

I own them both.  You dont even fully control Sonic in that game...he runs on his own you just steer left and right, jump and do a thrusting attack really......it has a slight attempt at depth with its experience points but still nothing major.  And yes Trauma Center lacks depth...its a what, 7 hour singleplayer game where you can perform any operation or two of your choice before you leave for work in the morning or school.

I wasn't trying to say it wasn't, I was just trying to make the point that even if a non-gamer really gets into one particular game, its no guarantee that they're going to branch out into more traditional-type games.

who said that? I merely said since Nintendo is marketing this console MAINLY as a non-gamer magnet...developers are going to mainly stay on that path with their software.

So because the Wii sells 5 million more than the PS3 in its life (hypothetically)....that means its more fun?  Thats rubbish.  The only people that should be saying sales = victory are the companies themselves...not the consumers.

Why not? You're assuming that party games will always sell the best, which is already debunked by Zelda's sales.

Well isn't it Nintendo's goal to expand their market to non-gamers, and use that to fill the gap caused by losing "hardcore" gamers to Sony's and MS's consoles?  If that happened, I don't know if the next Zelda will outsell "Nintendogs Wii" or whatever.

So would you consider a game like Panzer Dragoon, Radiant Silvergun or any other Railshooter/SHMUPS casual nongames because you don't have full control of your character? Your logic = failed.

The PS1 beat the N64 because it sold better, the PS2 beat the other consoles because it sold better. Maybe the N64 was more fun, maybe the GC was more fun; that's a matter of opinion. However, in terms of winning the war; sales are all that matters.

Nintendo barely has the hardcore demographic as it is.  What they have is the huge Nintendo fans, who buy up every first-party game and generally ignore third-party games.

1. nintendo markets to everyone. 2. other developers will cash in on any demographics that aren't being served well by their competitors. (violent games would be one area that they don't have to compete with nintendo for example.)

Zelda, Metroid, and Mario barely cater to the typical "hardcore" gamer anymore, they mainly cater to the huge Nintendo fans.  Nintendo needs good, in-depth third-party games to really attract hard-core gamers.

[QUOTE="Uptown"][QUOTE="Metrovania"][QUOTE="Uptown"][QUOTE="Pangster007"]This stupid misconception is getting really annoying now. No, non-gamers and casual gamers aren't going to bring doom to gaming as we know it. /threadMetrovania

who said that? I merely said since Nintendo is marketing this console MAINLY as a non-gamer magnet...developers are going to mainly stay on that path with their software.

We got Mario and Zelda and Metroid - gamers are being catered for.

its the same franchises that nintendo always flings around...whats new?

Don't start this, there are loads of new IPs comming out; don't let your ignorance of the facts cloud your judgement - check out a launch list some time.

There is no hope for him in his current mindset. WE NEED TO OPERATE. QUICK FIND A CASUAL WHO HAS PLAYED TRAUMA CENTER!!!!!!!

The Sims is a pretty indepth game to be quite honest...

I wasn't trying to say it wasn't, I was just trying to make the point that even if a non-gamer really gets into one particular game, its no guarantee that they're going to branch out into more traditional-type games.

To be quite honest, Sim type games are considered traditional gaming. Hell, it's probably more traditional than FPS games due to it's long history. From what I see, your female friends are gamers with a completely different taste in gaming than yourself. Just because they don't play Halo or any other FPS doesn't mean they're less of a gamer.

Anyways, your point would have been better illustrated if you used a "grandma playing Bejeweled" example.

[QUOTE="Uptown"][QUOTE="Ontain"][QUOTE="Uptown"][QUOTE="UssjTrunks"]Wasn't the cows' main argument last gen sales?Ontain

PS2 had the games to back it.

sales lead to better games.

not when your company is marketing Wifes to play your games. then it will always be simple Cooking Mama's and DS-esque games

1. nintendo markets to everyone. 2. other developers will cash in on any demographics that aren't being served well by their competitors. (violent games would be one area that they don't have to compete with nintendo for example.)

Developers are going to go where their games sell.  I'm making "Sci-Fi Online FPS", and I have to decide which console to put it on, do you think I'm going to choose the platform with a large percentage of people who play "Brain Age" or the platform where Tom Clancy games sell like crazy?
