Absolutely Everything We Know About Nintendo's Presence At E3 2009

A continuation of my Nintendo E3 Hype Thread

The Electronic Entertainment Expo is widely considered to be the industry's leading platform for all major game anouncements. E3 has, in the past, been a place to go big, or go home. Rumor has it that behind-closed-door deals have been made in order to ensure this same atmosphere prospers at this year's E3, and could this include Nintendo?

First, it is important to understand this:

(Referencing an E3 Question) ...We'll be showcasing the back half of the marketing calender and all of the content we will be launching at that point linkReggie

Nintendo is now, more than ever, tight lipped about everything they have in development. No longer will we have an anouncement of a Zelda game in 2004 only for it to wind up on store shelves late 2006. What Nintendo will show will only be for months June to December. If they do more than that, it will be one major bone to core fans.

Second, we need to know that that doesn't mean there will be nothing at E3, there might be a lot Nintendo has hidden that we won't know about until the conference. Here is what we do know:

1. Nintendo has something up their sleeves for this year, and E3. It's something big that we don't know about yet, and it will have to generate hardware sales.

Saturo Iwata wrote: Wii has been selling at industry's record pace so far, and with new customers acquired by the gaming population expansion efforts, it is not impossible for Wii's total sales to exceed the final install base of PS2. Wii still has much more room for expansion. We can expect more sales of software in the next fiscal year than in the current year. With what kind of software is Nintendo going to achieve this goal? Well, it will be shown at E3 to be held in the U.S. this June. - Satoru Iwata

link

2.We know that Nintendo has multiple new titles, whether that means 2, 3 or 10, we don't know.

Reuters wrote: NOA president, Reggie Fils-Aime cited 'a number of important new titles' coming for Wii and DS, and that Nintendo is "confident that we'll continue to see very strong hardware sales behind those launch titles."

link

3. We know Iwata wants to focus on Japan and getting their market going once again.

Satoru Iwata wrote: "The Japanese market is not very strong right now overall. So we need to do something to re-energize it."

link

4.We know that these titles will sell well in the West as well.

Gamestop wrote:"We think there will be a Nintendo key property coming out by the end of the year. They haven't given us any insight, but they have told us to reserve (shelf) space."

link

5.We know that Nintendo representatives are reccomending big Nintendo teams for E3.

Matt Casamassina wrote: Earlier from the GDC show floor, some Nintendo reps told me that I better get to E3 2009 early with a big team, comments that mesh well with Mr. Iwata's statements previously that Nintendo would demonstrate system-selling new software at the forthcoming exhibition.

link

6.We know that Nintendo did not meet their plans for releasing software and have several postponed titles for the latter half of this calendar year.

Satoru Iwata wrote: ...we at Nintendo have to reflect on domestic Wii software deployment in the former half of this year. Like what had been to be released in the former half of this year was postponed to the latter, we were not able to reach the original goal – to regularly make new proposals.

As for our deployment during the latter half of this year, I would like to announce on the other day as it is not today's main topic. I would like to address that Nintendo recognize that we have been short of new proposals during the former half of this year, so far."

link

Third, we should know that it's probably not zelda, mario or pikmin even though all three are in development today.

Zelda:

IGN wrote:

E3 2007:

Asked if Twilight Princess would be Wii's last Zelda, Aonuma said, "I can't say, but I guess for now, maybe, yeah (laughs). Not to say that it's going to be the final game. There's still a lot of potential with the Wii so there's still a possibility that there could be another Zelda for it. We do have some ideas in the works, but I can't say for sure because none of them have been approved and we're still very much in the planning process, so I hope you look forward to whatever comes out."

Mario:

The most unlikely out of the three because it is the one that released the most recent. Nintendo of Japan has also had a small team working on the Wii-make of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

Pikmin:

Gamepro wrote: Miyamoto noted that while Pikmin's Lead Designer worked on Wii Music much like Zelda's top talent took on Wii Fit, both developers are now back to working on their cl@ssic franchises.

link

That lack of a lead designer would make it seem like Pikmin 3 wouldn't be at a point of release, though this is the most likely of the three as it was announced to be in development 1 year ago (Miyamoto - 'we are making Pikmin').

Fourth, 3rd Parties will most likely play a larger roll in Nintendo's success.Satoru Iwata wrote:

n 3rdpartysales

When we look at the situation of Wii in Japan, we cannot say that the mechanism which worked on DS is working on Wii. Two years after its launch in Japan, in the latter half of the previous fiscal year, we were not able to largely increase the ratio of third party publishers sales in Japan.

However in Japan, the much-anticipated Monster Hunter Tri will be launched in the coming summer. Several new strong Wii titles are expected to follow. We recognize that this is an important, challenging time for us. We will challenge to increase the presence of third party titles on Wii.

link

Reggie Fils-Aime wrote:

I will be able to say our licensees 'get it' when their very best content is on our platform, and with very few exceptions today, that's not the case.

- November 18, 2008

link

Reggie Fils-Aime wrote: From a larger publisher standpoint, we're asking the same questions. What will it take for you to figure out what are the key insights to make a great piece of content for the Wii System. It's coming, I've seen it, there's a lot of great content coming. It's taking a bit longer, I think, than even many 3rd parties would say it needed to.

- March 27, 2009

link

Finally, If this E3 sucks, the next year will be full of news.

1.

Satoru Iwata wrote: "Wii-no-Ma service is available only in Japan at the start, but the overseas deployment is under planning in the future."

link

2.EDGE wrote:

EDGE: Is it true that Wii Music is the last of the games from your original list of ideas for Wii software?

MiyamotoLaughs) Yes, it is true that the existing Wii games, including Wii Music, were on the top priority list, but there is some other software, of course (laughs), but I cannot talk about it!

EDGE: You've covered sports, fitness and now music, all universally appealing subjects. Is it becoming more of a challenge to find new universal themes?

(Considers for a long time) Well, yes, it is challenging to find something universal but, after all, that's my job as I see it. Until the time that I am in a position to tell you the next subject, we can only confirm that we are working on the next Mario and the next Zelda, etc.

link

3.

Miyamoto wrote: My attitude is that obviously for 30 years now I've been making games and for the vast majority of time I've been making the type of games that the loyal Nintendo fans enjoy. Those are the types of games that my career is based on and we're going to continue to make those types of games. In fact, we have many of those types of games in development right now.

- October 27, 2008

link

4.

Miyamoto wrote:

What I've been saying to our development teams recently is that "Twilight Princess" was not a bad game, by any means. But, still, it felt like there was something missing. And while, personally, I feel like "Super Mario Galaxy" was able to do some things that were very new and were very unique, at the same time, from another perspective, certain elements of it do feel somewhat conservative in terms of how far we branched out with design. And so this is something I've been talking to both of those teams about.

Of course, as is customary with Nintendo, it's very rare that we are able to announce any games until they're ready for release, but I can say that these are themes that both of those teams are taking into account and the hope is that for both of those franchises, when we do release the next installments of the "Zelda" (franchise) or maybe the next "Galaxy," hopefully they will feel newer and fresher than their most recent versions.

link

5.GoNintendo wrote: Nintendo has announced that Masahiro Sakurai has started a new project. Yeah, you know the guy…he's the one that started that little series called Smash Bros.. What's the new title that Sakurai is working on? You know Nintendo isn't going to tell us that one. We'll have to hang tight and speculate endlessly until Nintendo decides to trickle-feed us info.

UPDATE - Looks like this is all part of a new company that works under Nintendo, Project Sora You can check out the official page here. Project Sora is a first-party company for Nintendo, and they're working on a new title at this time.

UPDATE 2 - Iwata has confirmed that the current project that that Project Sora is working on is not a new Smash Bros.. "It's not Smash Bros. I asked for. …I can promise an experience that's different from anything [you've played] up until now."

Based on all of this, what do you think Nintendo will show at E3 2009?

Mod edit - Made some fixes >_>

Do you know what i would really love from Nintendo. If they just came out now and said this E3 will focus on casuals (well i would have hoped they would do it earlier). That way it saves alot of heartache and their conference would be more appreciated. If not then fine dont say anything but i just dont like them hyping us for it and then not delivering.

Instead it seems that they are dangling us on a string with comments such as "both hardcore and casual will have something at E3" (reggie 08 pre-e3) or "The mario and zelda teams are hard at work" (e3 08).

Im hoping for some amazing first party N games. Not just good but amazing like the old Nintendo. We also seriously need to see what the mario and zelda teams are doing this year, it would be kinda funny if we got the same pic with iwata saying "they are STILL working very hard". I think mega64 summed up this scenario in their spoof "Why ******* bother".

My guess about who'll have the best E3 this year: 1. Microsoft (It's going to be epic megaton(s)! ) 2. Sony (More details on all the hot new 09 exclusives) 3. Nintendo (They've lost the hardcore, sorry)

I can't see them announcing Zelda Wii at this E3 because they already have Spirit Tracks and are gunna use that as an excuse to not announce a Wii one. However, I'm really hyped about this one, I hope Nintendo's E3 this year is huge.

I guess I consider myself a core gamer, and to be perfectly honest Nintendo's offerings just haven't satisfied my appetite for awhile now. Sure we will be getting a new Mario,Zelda, and Metroid announced and released and if you think about it that isn't really super hype-worthy news because those 3 franchises will be getting new releases like the sun comes up after night time.

Nintendo hasn't really done anything to get my attention since the N64 days, and I don't hold that against them I just know i've grown past the point where those things keep me deeply interested or satisified. And yet, Nintendo is needed by the gaming industry the same way Disney/Pixar and Dreamworks are necessary to film; they both offer family entertainment and a high value for a low cost.

Honestly, my biggest bone to pick with Nintendo is their complete disinterest in embracing a really competitive and user-friendly online presence, both for their own games and for their 3rd-party stuff. Their games rarely embrace online components, and when they do it feels as if your purposefully playing against an A.I. I can kinda see why they would do it, protecting the kids and what not, but why not build a space that allows 3rd party devs to really show off their multiplayer capabilities. Btw, i'm not saying they don't have an online system (obviously they do, I just know some of you are gonna list games that go online) but what i'm saying is their games and their online experiences pale in comparison to what is offered on other consoles and the PC, in a broad range of genre's.

Actually Nintendo has already said that from now on they see e3 as just business. They always save the hardcore games for their little nintendo events after. E3 07 was about wii fit, the event after revealed Mario Kart Wii. E3 08 was wii music, the event after = Punchout, Sin & Punishment, Mario & Luigi 3. So I'd suggest hyping those events instead of e3.

Well, it's just nice to see Nintendo show off its goods when it's the correct time to show them off... and not durring a "me too" event. It generates more hype at least.

Im pretty sure in an interview with geogg keighly (gametrailers) reggie said that E3 08 would have great things for the hardcore and he also made a similar statement in 09 with him. They want to keep us there but they dont want to feed us. Well except for a few scraps that they dont care for.

E3 was all about us (the hardcore) for Nintendo, in 06 it was about 90% hardcore(Z:TP, galaxy, brawl, prime3, red steel, secret rings, disaster, excite, FE) and 10% casual with Wii sports (awesome game still). This was amazing. 07 was about 50-50. Mario kart was announced at E3 07 and they showed brawl/galaxy. This was probabaly the most fairest and was fine by me. 08 was 10% us and 90% casual.

Were becoming more redundant each year. Nintendo was not sure they could capture casuals at the beginning but enticed us with all there franchises and as more rolled in thats just how its been. I wouldnt be suprised if E3 09 was 100% casual. Dont get me wrong im not a blind Nintendo hater and i would love for Nintendo to have the best E3. I just think its sad how each year were not as important although they said we were the most before.

It WILL be better than last years, I really can't think of a scenario that could be worse.

But last years flop of an E3 has taught me not to hype conferences.
