I've been really looking forward towards Ubisoft's Far Cry 2. In fact next week is too far away for my increasing interest and in order to relieve my hype I'll be at this weekend's Gaming Invasion along with Jeff where we shall relieve all the Far Cry 2 craziness inside. The even is being held in Toronto, Canada, and for those wondering you'll be able to catch us at the event this Saturday around 3-6 PM EST. Some people on the other hand have found other ways of reliving the inner Far Cry crave. A picture (above) was released on the Internet yesterday of a retail copy of Far Cry 2. Many were skeptical on the legitimacy of the picture, but not too long afterwards more reports starting coming in that many Gamestop store managers have received copies of the game. Whether this is an actual broken release, date or just a manager being a bit cocky is still unclear. It wouldn't be a bad idea though to check your local retail stores tomorrow to see if you can sneak a copy out. If that's not enough now we have yet ANOTHER batch of reports indicating that Far Cry 2 has been leaked onto the Internet. Which console you may ask? Well the 360 of course! The Xbox360 has really been taking in a lot of early releases of games via torrents, and its quite ironic how these torrents are directed towards the 360 rather than the PC platform many developers consider to be a pirate jungle. At least this leak isn't as bad as Fallout 3 where the game is still a good two weeks away till release.

Anyway, I am quite tired of all this piracy. It is becoming ridiculous. I don't know if it is just getting more press coverage this generation or if it is actually a lot more prominent but this needs to stop.

Even though I know this is not good for Ubisoft and the other developers who it is happening to I hope it continues to show companies like EA, Crytek and Lucasarts that piracy isn't just affecting PC.

Im sure they cant. Just like Sony cant stop the PSP piracy, or Nintendo the DS piracy. Once the firmware is broken and available in developer code its over for a console. The PS3 has had the developer code leakded... just not the firmware broken in a effective manner. Yet.

even when it becomes possible to pirate games on the ps3, you aint gonna get a lot of people doing it, you need a blu-ray writer which isnt cheap then to buy the blu-ray disc which isnt cheap, then somehow download some illegal firmware update that could screw ur ps3 then after that you would need to download 20gb worth of data for one game, so it's just not worth it I think ps3 has pretty muched stopped priacy in it's tracks for another 4-5 years

It has to get worse before it gets better. We need full blown piracy for people to actually do something about it.

actually, you dont need a Blue-Ray writer......from what certain hakers have said...the software can be run directly off the internal hard drive.

Did you hear about that new Law Bush signed. I bet a lot of pirates are going to lose all their PCs in their homes if they get caught. I bet a lot of those pirates don't even have a modded 360!

PS3_3DO

That law he's proposing isn't going to get passed, it would theoretically mean everyone whose found with any piece of pirated software, music, video etc would be arrested.

Heh wonder what ubisoft has to say now. Weren't they holding back Endwar because of PC piracy? I hope the 360 version gets held back as well, I mean it would only be the logical thing to do if we use thier train of thought.

Im sure they cant. Just like Sony cant stop the PSP piracy, or Nintendo the DS piracy. Once the firmware is broken and available in developer code its over for a console. The PS3 has had the developer code leakded... just not the firmware broken in a effective manner. Yet.

There are a couple of ways they could do it that would absolutely put a complete and total stop to piracy of new games... unfortunately everyone would complain if they tried it.

The easiest way I can think of is simple: include a Marketplace token inside original game boxes. The token would let you download a key which would activate the game for play. No key, no game. Piracy = solved.

The fact of the matter is Xbox 360 is still a fundamentally secure system; the hypervisor that controls code execution is secure (though it was compromised-and quickly fixed-once). The pirates are relying on modding the relatively insecure DVD ROM firmware such that the DVD ROM always reports that you have inserted an original Xbox Game Disc. If Microsoft can find a way to securely authenticate that Booktype report, that will stop the pirates cold. Unfortunately for Microsoft, it doesn't control the DVD ROMs it uses, so it can't unilaterally implement that functionality.

But you can betcha that Microsoft will learn its lesson and will apply it to the next Xbox.

The point I'm trying to make is this: Microsoft is in a fundamentally better security position with Xbox 360 than Sony is with PSP.

Your right. The point IM trying to make is that there is no effective way for Microsoft to currently stop piracry, which from a consumer standpoint puts them right in line with the PSP, and they will not change that this generation.

The issue is that the DVD Drives used in the Xbox 360 are bought from a variety of manufacturers, and each of these drives are designed with minimal effort on Microsofts part. The Xbox 360 is designed to only allow certain types of code to execute, and a non genuine 360 game does not contain the needed security measures. However, the DVD drives within the system can be 'hacked' via a firmware update to always provide these needed security flags to the 360, thus negating this layer of security.

Oh I see. Seems like MS thought of most security measures except this one.

[QUOTE="xgraderx"]This is either a hermit, cow or some kind of crazy hybrid trying to make the 360 look bad for piracy, which is really funny.Espada12

So it's ok when lems try to do it to the PC right? :S

I didnt say its OK.Its funny when anybody uses things like this as a way to put down a system.Fanboys somehow get a kick out of such things as piracy problems on another system.Thats funny to me and here in SW you can usually take a wild guess at whos posting what.On another topic,a 360 has to be modded to play pirated games.Modded 360s get detected on Xbox Live and get banned. So is the Piracy problem on the 360 only limited to 360s not hooked to LIVE?

Pirates aren't even gamers. They are generally people with low self esteem who think that by stealing, they are somehow special. What they don't realize is that they ARE special, only their flavor of special is spelled speshul.

Heh wonder what ubisoft has to say now. Weren't they holding back Endwar because of PC piracy? I hope the 360 version gets held back as well, I mean it would only be the logical thing to do if we use thier train of thought.Espada12

those guys at ubi need to be taught a lesson.

1 they refuese to digitaly sell their games if you aren't in north america and then complain about piracy, thats just asking for piracy

2 they say pc has huge priacy problems yet they don't seem to see that consoles also have big piracy problems.

the more 360 games leaked the beat then these compaines might stop complaing about priacy and relise its just going to happen no matter what.

[QUOTE="Cali3350"]

[QUOTE="UnnDunn"]Microsoft really needs to plug the piracy hole and fast.UnnDunn

The point I'm trying to make is this: Microsoft is in a fundamentally better security position with Xbox 360 than Sony is with PSP.

that sure works well, just look at steam. no valve game since the original hl2 has a working crack

Except that, at least in the case of Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3, they can still play those games in single player (which is arguably the most awaited portion of Far Cry 2) just by not connecting to the internet at all. And you act as if that's a small amount of people. It's more than a few million people just looking at the total sales of the 360 (when compared to Live accounts and not all Live accounts are even active) that could possibly have modded 360's not hooked to the internet.

exaclty, I'd like to see someone try and play tf2 without buying it. even if you got the game working (which would take forever) you'd still have the problem of not being able to connect to servers

Plus the fact that millions of modded 360's play on live all the time. M$ banned people around a year a go. Around 11 months ago a new firmware was released that circumvented the way Microsoft detected modded consoles. Someone could go burn Halo 3 and play it on live all day long. Microsoft wont do anything to them, because they cannot detect it.

This is great news. Not that I think piracy is ok, but maybe it will send a message to the devs who whine about PC piracy.
