I'd say MGS3. Mainly because of the storyline, and also because it has better graphics than any other Metal Gear Solid (once again, excluding MGS4) Since 90% of the people would choose Guns of the Patriots, I decided to exclude it.

Metal gear solid.
It didn't have inane story elements and unimportant plot lines like the others did or atleast as much as they did.

Snake Eater is the only MGS game that I loved enough to give a 9+. The greater focus on survival made the entire game much more intense and fun. The story doesn't go overboard like the other MGS games do, because it actually remains relevant throughout the entire game. Awesome boss fights too, awesome characters, and an overall awesome game. It basically made me forget the tragedy that was called Sons of Liberty.

But the gameplay sucked. Even Metal Gear 1 plays better than that archaic piece of garbage. Anyway, easily MGS3. The plot was by far the strongest in the series, the graphics were excellent, and the gameplay took the biggest leap in the series with the free roaming camera and the CQC was a great addition.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. The pinnacle of the series. Focused story and focused gameplay as well.

The boss fights were great with the exception of a certain robotic one and a certain unliving one. The last boss battle was so awful it should be purged from every existing copy of the game and replaced with a cinematic sequence. But what the hell was wrong with Sons of Liberty? I didn't even mind playing as Raiden. Now that game had some awesome boss fights. Tight gameplay, too, the only thing killing it was the stupid jolting sniper rifle "sway" they carried over from MGS1.

insecure much about metal gear games other then 1? if a game is so great then it can stand on its own with out any ones defending. I said what i prefered didn't know the thread was fav metal gear or tell people why their choice wrong.

I guess MGS3, no...MGS2. What a giant leap that game was.

Scratch that, MGS1, fantastic game, got it started.

You thought the last boss battle in MGS3 was awful? *Loads shotgun* Just in case ;) I loved all of 3's boss fights aside from Shadow (which wasn't much of a boss fight). The boss fight against The Fury is one of my favorite experiences in any game, ever. As for SoL, playing as Raiden was the least of my problems with the game. I didn't find any of the boss fights in 2 to be memorable, the story wasn't that good, and it was all over the place when it didn't need to be, and the game was too damn short and I honestly think that I spent more time watching cutscenes than actually playing. Just what I think anyway.

MGS3 : Subsistence, w/out the movable camera it was awful. Perfect balance between cinematics and gameplay, very tight game.

MGS1 brought me into the franchise. The stealth gameplay was new and exciting to me. Plus I really liked the characters: Meryl, Otacon, Snake, etc. Also loved the bosses Psycho Mantis, Vulcan Raven, Liquid, and the rest we extremely memorable.

I'd say Metal Gear Solid. It kicked the series off perfectly. It had a great story, great characters and I just had so much fun playing it through 4 or 5 times. The nostalgia is still bubbling within me :D

MGS1 and 2 had variety but on June 18 MGS1 will prove my point why it's indeed the best in the series.

Sigh. I hate Meryl. She said she was using a fifty caliber handgun since she was 8 years old. And she one hands a Desert Eagle and headshots one after the other, barely flinching.

They're all great games, and excluding PO its pretty close overall, but I gotta give it to MGS3 subsistence, even if MGS4 was in the competition. It just had a certain something that pushes it above and beyond the rest of them, and the new camera and online modes introduced in Subsistence perfected it. I wasn't crazy about MGSPO though, since the psp has only 1 analog I thought it would have been much better if the camera was over the top instead of behind the back. Still a good game though

MGS2. It had a fantastic storyline and the graphics at the time were really outstanding.
MGS3 was my least favourite because the controls were rather horrible, as was the storyline (way too simplified).

Completely agree with you. I felt that maybe Kojima intentionally simplified 3 because of the backlash MGS2's story created. In my eyes though the story felt very lazy. I mean, you have a guy who fired bee's at you for no reason. MGS2 had stupid bosses as well (like Fatman) but Kojima took the time to give you an emotional connection to the situation (Stillman's death motivated you to get revenge). In MGS3 it was just y'know.. Some guy shooting bee's!

The controls in MGS3 feels so blocky and un-fluid.

I always have a problem choosing between MGS1 and MGS2 in these polls. I think I'll choose MGS2 for today. The gameplay is the best of the three. My only issue with it is the lengthy CODEC dialogue.
