Mario BY FAR. Been consistently on 64 for a while. However, started playing World the other day. So musical. Mario is in another league.

Goemans Great Adventure for the N64 is an overlooked game. Maybe the best 2d sidescroller from that era.....also has great characters.

If it's not Mario, I'm sorry, you're wrong.

Well tropical freeze is my favorite 2D platformer, so i'll go with DK. I love the last 2 rayman games as well.

The new super mario bros. series is pretty vanilla.

Super Mario Bros.

Sonic is probably my least favourite. Crap series.

Sonic is technically superior to SMB in almost every way, from the gameplay mechanics, physics, level designs and pacing to the graphics, scrolling and music. There is almost nothing that SMB does technically better other than being more difficult, by often relying on cheap tricks. Mario fans should try take off those rose-tinted nostalgia goggles.

This is a pretty ridiculous post. I mean, you're free to think Sonic is better, but don't try to falsely give your post the veneer of objectivity by saying "technically superior" when you're just stating your opinion on things like level design, mechanics, music (the only thing even remotely objective about this is the sound quality and I say that as someone who greatly prefers Sonic's soundtracks). I for one think Sonic's levels are fairly uninspired and repetitive compared to Mario's.

Also, accusing Mario fans of nostalgia and rose-tinted goggles for thinking Mario is better is very cheap and is pretty much the tactic of people who can't handle opposing opinions. I expect better from you.

It's a series that encourage you to go fast, then punishes you for going fast. Worst fucking game design ever.

Then you clearly missed the point of the game design. It's like a racing game, where the more you master the tracks, the faster the lap times you get. Sonic has an arcade-style of game design, something many Mario fans fail to grasp when they bash it for not playing like their favourite slow Mario games.

Mario is not slow in general. It's just slow compared to Sonic, but everything is slow compared to Sonic.

Anyway, I vote for Mario even in spite of the generic NSMB games. I think it's incredible that he has dominated both 3D and 2D platformers.

Banjo, Spryo, and Crash are not sidescrollers dewd. Mario is the king. Sonic was never that great even Sonic CD was mediocre and that's widely considered to be the pinnacle of the series. Also have to mention Ristar. Sadly, it never became a series but that game was one of my favorites as a kid.

People actually think Sonic CD is the best Sonic game? I think it feels really sloppy compared to Sonic 1-3/Knuckles.

Does Ori and the Blind Forest count?

Otherwise I'd probably say Rayman.

I elaborated on those points in a later post:

I was talking about the original SMB trilogy and the original Sonic trilogy, not later Mario and Sonic games (the poll lists SMB, not Mario as a whole, and is about the side-scrollers). The Mario series improved after that, while the Sonic series went downhill after that. But if we're comparing the original SMB trilogy to the original Sonic trilogy, the original Sonic trilogy is technically superior in most categories: the gameplay mechanics are more sophisticated, the physics more realistic, the level designs are deeper, it has faster arcade-style pacing, it has better graphics and more advanced scrolling, and catchier and more varied music.
