FEAR is the best game ever created. Better than Half-Life. Here's why.

[QUOTE="organic_machine"]

[QUOTE="Cherokee_Jack"]I don't think FEAR's gunplay is particularly outstanding. I'd even say it's in the same league as HL2 in that respect. The brilliance of its combat is in the AI, not the guns.Cherokee_Jack

The recoil, the sound, and the effect on the envoirnment all contribute to the gunplay, at least in my definition. That places it above HL2 in my opinion.

It's above HL2, and it fits the rhythm of the game well, but it's still not as satisfying as something like COD or Killzone.

...I'm going to get ripped to shreds for saying that, aren't I. >__>

You can't compare the gunplay in FEAR to the gunplay in Call of Duty. The guns have little recoil in Call of Duty. They also don't sound like guns either. Additionally, at least in multiplayer, there are no ragdoll animations when people die.

Most of the guns are still much better than FEAR's. Obviously FEAR wouldn't benefit from having the exact same sort of guns, but when I replayed it the last time I found the weapons were not as good as I remembered. The penetrator and the repeating cannon were the only standouts.

Amazing game. Once you have played through it multiple times, on extreme difficulty and collected all of the intel to truly unravel the amazing story...then you will truly see that F.E.A.R. is one of the best games of all time and definetly in the top 5 FPS's.

The game has better gunplay and better AI. However like a lot of people have already pointed out, the environments get really old really fast. I also think they should have had more enemies to fight, it gets a bit stale towards the end...and lets not forget how horrible those ghost enemies were. They were pointless. Then Fear 2 came along and took everything the first did and **** it all up.

Lol, no. Bad gunplay, bad pacing, bad vehicle sections, bad enemy AI, bad story, bad level design... the only good thing about HL2 was the atmosphere and pacing in Ravenholm, and the NPC interaction with the mute protagonist avatar.

foxhound_fox

Uhh, no. If you're going to actually call out HL2 "weak" points you'd have the gunplay and enemy AI. Then you'd also realize that the game is 7 years old and hardly any FPS' at the time played similarily to current COD clones.

The game has always been praised for it's level design and more specifically it's pacing. To say both of those aspects were bad is just plain moronic.

FEAR is a good game but I never really considered it to be one of the best shooting games. I found the campaign to be a little dull to be honest but I love the kung-fu.

My top 5 shooters this gen in no order are: Vanquish, Halo: Reach, Half-Life2: Episode 2, Crysis and F.E.A.R.

They all do things different from one another, but where F.E.A.R. succeeds is in how visceral the combat is within an oppressive atmosphere. Absolutely kinetic game. I love it and I'm glad to hear others praising it!

F.E.A.R. STILL is the one shooter where the simple act of firing a weapon is the best. It is unmatched by anything else. Not even the mighty Crysis has weapon handling like F.E.A.R., not even Halo or Half-Life. Not Call of Duty, not Gears of War, not Rainbow Six Vegas and certainly not drivel like BioShock. Aiming with the wii-remote doesn't help with gun-handling. Boosting across battlefields in Vanquish still doesn't elevate the simple act of firing a weapon in F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R. stands as the most kinetic shooter available on the market. It got some serious attention in 2005, and it's a shame that the series has spiraled into mediocrity since then. But memories of that first showdown in F.E.A.R., that made the combat better than anything else. Absolutely stunning game!

While fear is awesome it has a problem with the level design all feeling the same, while the second game improved it it still has some issues. I just like crysis so much better with much better level design and nano suit is much more useful and changes how the game can be played much more than bullet time.

No. Its combat and feedback is absolutely outstanding, yes even with a lacking enemy variety and combat scenarios. Its plot was good, the narrative of the game was *woeful* (whoever thought phone messages was a good idea, good grief). Environments were predictably bland. The scares were cheap and for most of the part, pretty mediocre - any tension was lost after the realisation that you weren't under threat, it was merely a 'ghost train'. So no, you're wrong, even if FEAR is a damn good shooter in its own right.

Great weapons wasted on a horribly fragmented story, numbingly dull level design and constricted AI. All those tricks the soldiers can do and you approach them the same way every time. It wasn't even particularly scary because its so repetitive. I was also very surprised by how easy the game was. Playing on the second highest difficulty and you can carry like 10 medkits at once...

I really wish more games incorporated Fear's "bullets destroying wall" aspect of the gunplay into their games... every gunfight was like a firework show, and that was years ago. I can't imagine how good that would look these days.

The gunplay and AI are great even by todays standards, but the repetitive environments and weak(non-existing) storytelling made it so boring I couldn't even finish it. There's just not enough variety, and if you aren't afraid of little girls much of the atmosphere is lost as well.

Nah. Repetetive, boring level design, partially saved by good gunplay.

i know really, fear was a game that had it all, and I don't get why everyone thinks the levels were repetitive, yah maybe office complexes have similar looking areas I never once felt like i was running thought he same area over and over again. the story was great, the atmoshpere was great, the gunplay was great, the spooky moments were great, and the level design was good enough

I personally didn't like it much. Good graphics and solid atmosphere for the time but nothing really special, let alone groundbreaking.
