*update 2* check out this indepth analysis of the patent of ff15 battlesystem #hype reignited

*update* Tabata's also in pursuit of a Final Fantasy that's not as overwhelming as its predecessors, and one that can be enjoyed by a broader audience. "With Final Fantasy 15, I do want to make it more casual," he says. "Of course the depth of the game is going to be there, but I want to make it so players can easily experience the satisfaction of the depth of the game." There's an option to set that car to drive itself, allowing players to sit back and take in the sights - although there is also an option to drive it manually, should they want to engage more fully with the world.

"Another example is in the combat," explains Tabata. "With the hardware specifications of the newer consoles, it's possible to set it up so you have different enemies and different choices of attacks you can enter in, but I want to simplify that. It'll basically be a one-button action, and the AI intuitively outputs an action that kind of satisfies, gives you that instant gratification, and it connects with the simple touch of a button. I myself am not getting any younger. I don't want to be frantically pushing buttons. I also want to utilise the intelligence of the hardware spec, and not have to go through too much hassle or trouble in order to execute moves."

- The battle system will feature very flashy moves and abilities, and feel like an action packed flow of moves. There will be warping and magic attacks, and there will be combination attacks with party members which are generated automatically based on context.

- He also mentions that because this is a RPG, you can also play more strategically, and that during combat you can pause the game into a menu and adjust party behavior, change weapons, etc.

- The weapon system in the game is treated like a deck. You set weapons on the deck in the menu, and during combat the most appropriate weapon in the deck will be used based on the situation.

- The evasion in the game is executed by "defensive movement" which is a stance the player goes into when holding down the defense button. This allows the player to move around defensively avoiding attacks.

more info here about development + day/night cycle

ok this SUCKS! i wanted a more action game but this sounds very automated, i mean there is a button to evade all the moves no timing involved what so ever WTF. ive not played ff12 but apparently the system is similar to that. there are 0 female characters (personally dont give a shit but the white knights over at gaff are bitching about it) + u only 1 playable character

also the game is around 50-60% complete, they started the game again and changed the whole outlook around 2 years ago, there was a article years ago which detailed this but obviously we didnt have a confirmation of its authenticity until now

the thing is ff versus was advertised as an action game and it seems 2 years ago they scratched all that and made it more like a traditional ff. i was hoping for more action stuff but now that versus is a mainline ff game i guess it was too risky for them to make that big a change

@Heil68: I don't think it is turn based. I could be wrong, but from the clips I've seen, it didn't appear to be.

No... just no. This is not normal in RPG's... this is however normal in extremely modern RPG's (if you even want to call them that). I wasn't going to buy this anyways, because it already looked like a joke. 1 playable character, basically QTE, movie sequences... this isn't a game, it is a QTE Devil May Cry rip off movie with boy band emo Japanese characters. This is NOT FF. How can they manage to continually make FF worse? We need a FF that is like one of the first 10.. hell, I would even take a IX-2.

In an RPG very few battle mechanics are interesting in and of themselves. The thing you should be looking at is what else can the defensive mode do? What does it lock you out of doing? How does it riff off other mechanics? It's an action-RPG after all, not an action game.

Interesting so the character will dodge any attack by only holding the ( guessing ) circle button? i believe KH2 had that and it wasnt that easy to block or dodge all attacks heck some of the hard bosses would still attack you even if you dodge 80% of their attacks as that 20% that go through deal massive damage.

Yeah i sort of knew it has a deck of cards system for summoning swords as seeing in the trailers how a new sword shows up everytime Noctis attacks and thats very similar to Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories.

so this more and more like KH? sounds good to me!

You should play type-0 to see how they implemented auto attack because its really no big deal when you still have many options to fight how you want.

The character is using the normal attack in a loop there, but this would get you killed in a seconds with a strong enemy. You have to dodge the enemy attacks (dedicated evasive button there too) attack (options in term of holding the stick up, down or normal attack), cast spells (can be charged), use summons or ultimate magic (Need to make a decision before the mission starts). Then you can attack the enemy in a small time window to make critical damage (allows you to fight extremly hard enemies which should be impossible to beat at a certain level) and switch between characters on the fly.

You should really play FF-type-0 to get a sense of the combat style. This one looks more grounded and slowerpaced which im thankfull of because it can get really hectic in type-0.

The only thing I didnt like about this news is the deck system because I wanted to chose my weapons at any time myself.

But I like what im hearing about the pause function.

By the way, you are wrong about noctis being the only playable character.

Edit: Now that I think about it. Maybe you could just chose a single weapon in the deck and main that one then bringing up the menu and allocate another weapon.

@ghostwarrior786: So... your hype is deflated because.... its not a "Oh look guys, lets all stand in a line and take turns to attack?" this looks pretty much like Kingdom Hearts to me with maybe more depth.... what the hell is wrong with that?

We already saw from gameplay that the main character is able to use multiple weapons at once, again what is wrong with that?

FF hasn't been good for 2 generations.

Not sure why I should think this one will be any different.

The Paradigm Shift system was very similar to setting up a deck... I was worried about it until I got my hands on it and realized it was a blast, and very strategic...

Like all Final Fantasy games you really have to get comfortable with the combat system before you can judge its depth... I will reserve my judgement.

Im not really sure how crisis core played anymore because its so long ago.

But I remember that I liked Type-0 more and hopefully FFXV will step it up even more.

Im not really worried about the shown gameplay because they are taking from the looks of it Type-0 as the basis and are adding more gameplay features like teamattacks, teleportation and a pause menu.

It seems different, and that's good. I liked Final Fantasy 13's combat, it was refreshing and different. This sounds the same, different.

Sounds like you'll still be in control of the party to a larger extent by switching up tactics mid-fight. Stuff is "automated" more, but you're controlling at a slightly higher level than just mashing the attack button. Instead of trying to be a very simple action game, they are trying to keep it about higher level strategy and party management. That's not a bad thing.

Final Fantasy isn't an action game and it shouldn't play out like one.

How could you find FF13 combat system good? Its just bash the A button till the enemy drops dead.

@clyde46: You obviously either never played FF13 or only made it about an hour into the game. The FF13 battle system is very deep, requires fast thinking and proper preparation. You cannot simply hit "x" to win. Particularly once you get to chapter 5 or 6 the depth really starts to show.

It sounds better than I expected, but I would much prefer they use something where you have more control. Stop the game between attacks and ask me what I want everyone to do.

I still don't like the idea of direct control over your characters in a FF game. They should have kept it turn based or at the very least pause and ask you what action you want performed when an action is completed.

I wont be touching this game with a barge pole.

Sounds very similar the Dragon Age: Origins on PC with the pausable (not sure if that's really a word) combat. You control one character, which you can switch at any time, and pause to give your party commands.

It can actually work well when attached to some gratifying moves. As long as you keep full control of one character so as you remain attached to the fight. If you press 'go' and then sit back to watch the whole fight, it stops being a game.

Which does give me hope since the battle system for that game was fun. Welp guess gatta wait for that demo that comes with type-0 so I can a better understanding of what they are going for.

it doesnt sound like crisis core to me because in cc u had to get ur timing right to evade/block but in ff15 u just hold a button and it does the work for u. it is the same director though so maybe he will make changes to ff15 going forward

Sounds like a cross between KH: Chain of Memories (eww) and FFXII (yay).

Game should have stuck to its premise as an ARPG.

This sounds like a mix between a more action oriented real time battle system with a more strategic one, characteristic of old CRPGs. We'll see how it goes, but for now, I'm cautiously hyped.

I'm not the biggest FF player here but I don't think that FF 15 looks that great. And if I was a fan I wouldn't like seeing a numbered sequel of the series to be more of an action rpg then a turn based rpg. Maybe this is what the fans want of FF15 so hopefully it turns out well for them. But still it looks more like a spinoff title which originally it was then a numbered sequel (not counting the mmo titles). So why bother making it part of the main series? I still don't get it.

To me it looks like it's somewhere between KH and FFXII. If we don't get a PC version, this game might be the PS4 killer app for me.

Thank GOD! I cant stand turn based combat anymore. Even if its minimal like the one in Ni No Kuni or FF XII. Its boring

Isn't that normal for turned based RPG's? I've at least dont it in a few I've played.

the thing is ff versus was advertised as an action game and it seems 2 years ago they scratched all that and made it more like a traditional ff. i was hoping for more action stuff but now that versus is a mainline ff game i guess it was too risky for them to make that big a change

everything you have in the op is everything that Nomura has been repeating since 2006, so I don't know from where you get the idea that it was going to be like DMC or something. Nothing has changed. It's just a slightly modified battle system from the one in Kingdom Hearts. A mindless button masher.

Now what has me a bit preoccupied is that they made the game smaller in scope after they restarted it. I hope they deliver what they promised: world-map, side-quests, airships, chocobos and many other traditional elements.

So sad that the classic FF is gone though, I really hope someone else fills the gap.
