I too think that it is overrated, but definitely not the most overrated of all-time. There are plenty of other games that I can think of that are more overrated than FF VII (i.e. Madden 05-07).

Totally was overrated, people freaked because it was ZOMG FINAL FANTASY IN 3D, but the graphics weren't worth the useless, endless fetch quest known as the first disc (you see a guy in black? yea but he went to next town sry. repeat 5x.)

I believe in that. Too bad people didn't play the games prior to Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy VII became the first final fantasy for most people. Your favorite Final Fantasy tends to be the first one you played.

Wow. If this was 6-8 years ago, people would've looked at you and say that was a crazy statement. You people don't understand the significance FFVII brought to home entertainment. FFVII was one of the major pioneered games that killed arcade gaming.

I thought it was a great game when I played it. Remember, don't judge that game by today's standards, judge it for the time it was in.

So the game completely revolutionizes the genre, presenting a never before seen quality of presentation, graphics (which were incredible at the time), music and computer generated 3D backgrounds to go along with the greatest RPG story or all time and the game is considered overrated? It was long, the side-quests were numerous and very fun and honestly, up to Final Fantasy VII what RPG had cooler characters or setting?

The game was spectacular and may be looked down upon by first time players who have played it lately because of how far along the genre has come. But RPGs would not be what they are today without FFVII, which even now is playable and a lot of fun!

Maybe you guys saying it's overrated didn't play it when it first came out, maybe you were to young. FFVII cahnged the game of RPGs. Back than if you had an RPG is was over-head camera 2-d pixels.

Nah, I bashed it when it first came out (on pc). The characters looked like lego.

(I had a saturn at that era, and never played any "3D" games on it. Bought one FFVII copy for pc and was disappointed.)

And, it was (one of) the game that promte the whole graphics > gameplay trend for RPG games.

You gotta love all the 'FF7 is overrated' threads

Why do they say it is overrated? They played it and didn't like it because of random battles or to long of a story.

Well guess what, I played probably the most highly acclaimed game of all time, Zelda Ocarina of Time, and I didn't like it that much, but does that mean its overrated? No

Even I realize the original Halo was a great game for people despite me having 0 interest in it

Please, take that box off your head and realize that since FF7 makes pretty much every top 10 games of all time list ever devised it is NOT overrated

FF7 fans are very attached to the game because unlike 99.99% of the games out there it was a very emotional game, and that's why so many are still attached to it to this very day

and the game did deserve more than 9.5

I don't think so. FFVII, Street Fighter 2, GTAIIIand Super Mario Bros.3 are the only games that actually exceeded expectations.

James_Lipton

FF7 didn't exceed expectations because there WERE no expectations for the game. Before FF7 came out, FF titles were still playe donly by RPG fans and fans of the series from the NES and SNES. Somehow the combination of the PS1 and casual gamers (and complete lack of any decent RPG on the console at the time) created a massive boom for FF7 among casual gamers and people who had never played an RPG before.

The game was great at the time, and good overall, but certainly not worth the legendary praise people have given it. The graphics were mostly bad, even for the time, because the game started development for the N64 (hence the blocky Nintendo-esque characters). Then they used the power of CD to make cutscenes...some good, some matching the graphics of the game.

If the PS1 didn't end up the casual, money-making machine we now know, FF7 would have been forgotten long ago. Instead it is kept alive as a legendary RPG MOSTLY because it was the first accessible and mainstrea RPG many casual gamers played. And we always remember out first, so to speak.

I've played countless RPGs and every FF title so far (except 11) and I can think of 5 I would rather go back and play before part 7. As somebody said, part 7 had numerous problems and an extremely boring story which amounted to little more than a 70 hour game of tag...or a fetch quest as somebody perfectly put it.

FFVII is not overrated.

It's what brought RPG's to the masses. It was the first truly cinematic RPG experience, with memorable locations, characters and music. It completely reinvigorated the genre, and spawned many, many clones.

Love it or hate it, what it did to the RPG genre cannot be denied.

Well, calling someting overrated or not is really subjective. A game is either popular or it isn't. If people are part of the popular side, they will say the game deserves the praise. The people who are the minority are going to say the game is over rated.

But I still think that there can be logical and supported arguements made. I personally feel FF7 is over rated and it's status is kept going more by nostalgia than actual quality. It's like arguing with a 13-year old white boy from the suburbs that maybe Eminem or 50 cent aren't the legends he believes they are. While I could make a million arguements to support my position (or opinion), they will always fall back on the success and popularity.

Nobdoy is absolutely right or wrong when it comes to taste. But speaking for myself, I would easily take FF 6, FF8, FF9, FF 10, FF12 AND FF tactics over FF7. IN fact, when all myhouse was broken into years ago, and all my PS1/PS2 games stolen, FF7 was the only FF title that Ididn't bother buying backwith the insurance money. It was also the only FF game that i have beaten and felt done with and no point going back.

Any game can be labeled overrated a decade later.

12 year olds believe that Goldeneye on the N64 is overrated..sure it is NOW because of how far we've come.

You obviously just cant appreciate games..and thats alright. Not many people do here on System Wars.

I completely agree. It really confuses me when people praise this game. It's one of the only RPG's in 20 years of gaming that I simply could not finish. And I've played some bad ones iin that time.

judging from your low GS level, I'm unsure if this is an attempt at a conversation, or nothing more than flamebait. Either way, I'll respond.

I've been gaming since the Atari 2600 days, and owned the NES, SNES, and N64. I wouldn't define myself as a fanboy, but I loved Nintendo. I was a little disappointed in the n64, but I loved it none the less. I actually made fun of my dorm mate because he had a ps1, with what I considered crappy graphics. He got the game FFVII.....I was amazed, i was dumbstruck. As I was a poor college student and could only afford one console I sold my n64 and games and was able to get a used ps1 and a copy of FFVII. IMO, no game before or since has challenged my beliefs of what entertainment a videogame could provide. For god's sake, I failed that semester that i was playing that game. So, IMO, FFVII was not only not OVERhyped, it was UNDERhyped. Every gamer should have the chance to play that game.

I've been around since the twilight of the 2600 and the golden years of the NES myself. Final Fantasy VII is a very good game, but I agree it's overrated. Overall the game felt like it was trying to do way too many cool things at once. As a result, many of these things felt half-finished and really didn't mesh togetherly properly as a whole. The supposedly epic storyline was really quite shmultzy, incoherent, vague, and sometimes just silly. For me, Final Fantasy Tactics will always be the best in it's series. Everything about Tactics is the essence of what Final Fantasy should be.

I agree with the TC. FFVII is the most overrated game, ever. In the entire history of gaming.

Don't say it's because I didn't play the game when it first came out, because I did. I did not like it. The problem is that Sony hyped the hell out of the game, and thus a bunch of people who had never even looked at an RPG before bought it and they had no clue what an actual GOOD RPG was. Then it became their default favorite and even now over a decade later people still fawn all over it like it's the best RPG since Gary Gygax was stillwriting guides for tabletop military games.

Even when the game came out, it was UGLY. Look at the in game character models, and the enemy models. I sat there with controller in hand thinking "They traded clean looking, colorful sprites for this visual dog****?" And yet everyone was spooging all over the game because "ZOMG! IT'S 3D!" More like sort of 3D, considering that the backgrounds were flat, pre-rendered images. I thought the SGI demo animationthat Square released of Terra, Locke, and Shadow back when "FFVII"was supposed to be for the N64 looked a hell of a lot better.

The random battles didn't bother me, considering that they'd been a staple of RPGs for decades by then. What did bother me was the looooooooong unskippable summoning movies. Yeah, they look wonderful the first few times, but after the 520,596,872nd time it's like "Ho hum, think I'll go make a sandwich." Summoning movies probably account for a good 30% or so of the game's average length.

I also didn't care for the Sci-fi feel of the game. It's barely fantasy, and don't give me that "Sci-fi is a type of fantasy." crap. I have nothing against Sci-fi, but I think that a game with the name Fantasy in the title should at least have something to do with fantasy other than the odd sword stuck in there.
