FF XIII i enjoyed the combat more and i liked the story more even if it wasn't told all that well.

You enjoyed combat in FFXIII? Maybe Im missing something...
I like XIII (platinumed it), it had a great battle system, and looked good. However, the characters, story, linearity spoiled it a bit.
XII was clearly a better game, there was so much to do in it. Two points of criticism at Xii though, zodiac spear (NOT opening 4 random chests in the game, with no indication you shouldn't... nuff said) and some of the long, tedious fights (Yiazmat anyone?). But these didn't spoil the game as a whole.
I like both but I have to give the edge to Final Fantasy XII. I love the gameplay, the Gambit system, world, etc. My only gripe would be that I wish the story centered more around the characters than the politics.
The game was awesome and I've been itching to go back to it sometime.
XII was the better Final Fantasy. Expansive world to explore, memorable locales, great soundtrack, amazing voice talent, superb script, flexible combat engine. It was (IMO) an offline MMO Final Fantasy and it rocked.
XIII was not a bad game (contrary to SW propaganda). It was no where near as expansive or memorable as XII, but it had plenty going for it. The combat engine was fast and enjoyable, locales a sheer feast for the eyes, some overall quality voice acting. I'd take XII 8/10 times over XIII, but I'd definitely play both several times through.
I liked XII a lot more. The story was simple and no where near as confusing as XIII's was, I enjoyed the combat a lot more and the characters were so much better than the crap in XIII.
XII had no character development and a truly awful plot where after I finished it I actually questioned if helping Ashe was even the right thing to do, at least XIII did have good character development and a fairly good story. Yeah I prefer XIII but lets face it we are comparing turds here, neither are any where near the heights FFVI, VII and VIII were when they came out (or even today if you can look past graphics).

Was their involvement in the plot and script SO bad that it detracted from the rest? I don't think so. Sorry they ruined it for you.
Wait, was there actually a DQIX vs JC2 thread? I posted that as a joke back in the RDR vs FFXIII thread, did someone do it?
Anyways, I haven't played FFXII and I'm about 35 hours into FFXIII. I'm really enjoying FFXIII alot, great story, good characters (except maybe Vanille and Snow) great setting, fun, rewarding combat... I mean, FFXIII really is a great game.
Vanille and Hope are the new Vaan and Penelo (as far as annoying characters).rawsavonI don't see how Hope is annoying...?

It seems many people are heartless in this regard. Hope loses his mother early on, is somewhat distanced from his father, and has no one to turn to in a difficult situation. His growth over the first half of the games is the highlight of the story, IMO. I once argued that FFXIII could be seen as a coming-of-age story centered around Hope, with the other characters acting as makeshift familial ties.
But coolness is the generally desired character trait in games.

Just so you know I haven't finished the game so if you have beaten it don't spoil it for me! (I'm at the second fight with Barthandalus in chapter 11.)
I agree with what you said. Hope has family issues, and for some reason that = annoying character? That actually makes for an interesting character to me.
Also, I think Sazh had my favorite backstory of any of the characters.

Don't worry, Hope's story arc ended with the scene & boss fight at Palumpolum. Story shifts after that and he becomes just another member of the cast.
As for Sazh... well, I liked that he was just trying to get back to his son, but he was kinda shrugged off in the story, I feel.

I don't know, I still like him.
Anwyays, I think people are just unecassarily hard on the game. taken on its own merits, it's very good.
I don't see how Hope is annoying...? I don't see how he is not :? ...I just wanted him to STFU the entire time he was on screen. I can't stand whiny male characters (the reason I hated Tales of the Abyss)[QUOTE="rawsavon"]Vanille and Hope are the new Vaan and Penelo (as far as annoying characters).turtlethetaffer

He wasn't very whiny. He lost his mother in the beggining of the game, in case you don't remember. And he's estranged from his father.
Final Fantasy 12 was better. Even though I found it's story dull, I liked the battle system and the expansive world the game was set in. I can't think of a single positive thing about Final Fantast 13 apart from graphics. It also had Hope, one of the most annoying characters ever.

I remember the game. I remember what happened. It does not change the fact that he whines like a little ***** for most of the game. I can't stand that s***. Act like man. For many games, it is just a side character that acts like that (not as big of a deal). But some games force that character on you (FF13, forced to play as certain parties for long periods of time...Tales of the Abyss, the lead). There is little that annoys me more IRL and in games than a whiny male.FFXIII for me
more enjoyable battle system
the sumons in XIII were actually useful
I liked the Crysterium more than the License Grid.
Better looking (and not just on a technical level)
a better and more memorable soundtrack
Neither game's story left me impressed by the end, but atleast XIII's was alright in the first half and had some promise, plus the fact I found the world and lore more interesting in XIII. XII's dialogue was much better written though.
I enjoyed both. Though the werid thing when it comes to negatives they kinda have the same problem to me. FF12 maps felt way to big just for the sake of being big and was a pain to explore and FF13 maps were way to linear. I want something in the middle. The one thing I felt confused about FF12 was that the main character Vaan didint feel like the main character at all. He felt like he was just there compared to some of the other cast. While I didint feel like that with any of the cast of FF13. If I had to pick one it would be 13 just cause I enjoyed the combat more. In the end they are both great games.

Was this because your final team was Lightning, Fang, and Hope? I believe they were the best team to use from the start, because of the selection of roles.
Before the game was released, I wanted an all girl party ( ;) ), but Hope was just a better character in combat overall.
The combat is better in FFXIII, but FFXII's maps are better designed. The story is sort of a mess in FFXIII and in FFXII it just doesn't go anywhere.
Idk, maybe a tie? Maybe FFXII is slightly better?
Final Fantasy XII's Gambit system was atrocious and the story is one of the weakest in the series. I see why Sakaguchi didn't even play the game after the first cutscene despite the director issues at Square. It did have a nice soundtrack though;)
Final Fantasy XIII wins this in terms of story, gameplay, presentation, etc, etc by miles.

Well just replace fang with sazh and that was my team. I know it wasint he best set up in the start but I eventually upgraded enough that I was able to expand sazhs roles to the other roles. I usally make rpg teams by characters I like rather then power or stats in geniral. I just end up having more fun when I do that and in the end thats what really matters to me. Thats not to say I hated the other 13 characters is just if I had to pick 3 for a team that would be it.
Why even bother voting/replying if you haven't played 12? This thread isn't asking "Vote for the game you played!"Never played 12 but 13 is pretty good so i'm going to go with that one.

Final Fantasy XII is arguably my favorite PS2 game. I greatly enjoyed everything about the game minus the fact that I had to use Vaan as the party leader in towns/settlements. I really wish I could have seen how the game turned out if Basch (the supposed traitor/my avatar) had been the main character througout, like originally intended to be. Not every FF game has to have a metrosexual teenage boy as the lead in order to have a good story. I enjoyed the political Star Warsish storyline of FFXII and I found the combat system to be one of the best battle systems in any JRPG ever, rivaling the Tales series.
Final Fantasy XIII while wasn't as bad as made out to be, wasn't the best either. An enjoyable game but stripped away many aspects of an RPG that makes an RPG. It was very streamlined and went from autobattle easy to a bit frustrating at the end, where one had to have a sentinel out moreso than not. Still, I enjoyed the story and battle system mostly, there were just all those little things I enjoy about RPGs that weren't there (NPC interactivity, real sidequests, etc.).
FF12 is the better game, the battle system, the open world, a more political centered story mixed up to make a great game. My only gripe is the main character Vaan... He served no purpose and makes you wonder why he even exists xD But I guess thats what happens when a character is added at the last minute to appeal to the younger crowd...
FF13 slap in your face linearity just killed it for me, the battle system wasnt bad I just thought it was a step back from 12.

Yup, Basch was the originally intended main character but once the game switched developers midway through the story kinda suffered a bit for it. One of those changes was to include Penelo and Vaan but god forbid a FF game have adults at its storyline
Easily FF12, 13 would have been actually good if it werent for annoying characters/va and the worst story in the history of gaming. The first hour of 13 SE just throws information at you like you already know wth the main characters are talking about when you really just say to yourself "why?".
12 probably has the best combat system out of all the Final Fantasy game. It's a shame the latest one doesn't improve from it.

I've heard this from fans, but I have never seen anything that suggests more than it being a change that occurred very early on in development. Vaan is a male lead along the lines of Denim and Ramza before him and I see no reason to believe he wasn't intended to be the main character, despite the fact that the story never brings the special relationship that starts to develop between him and Ashe to fruition.

Ballroompirate
FFXIII utilizes a plot device known as In Media Res. Despite the fact that you don't know exactly what they're saying, the dialogue is designed for you to be able to piece things together. It's actually one of the more clever aspects of FFXIII, although not traditional JRPG storytelling ...
