Final Fantasy 13 had the best combat and gfx, but the worst everything else.

Can we atleast all agree on this? IMO the combat was definitely leagues better than any other final fantasy before it, and the graphics are a no-brainer. Unfortunately, it was surrounded by poor design outside of battle.

I remember reading that the game wasn't as expansive as previous games because of the difficulty of the hardware. It really makes me wonder how even better the game could have been on the ps2.

I liked FFXII's combat a lot, I don't know if I'd say XIII's is better, I do believe XIII has a good amount of depth, but the gambit system in FFXII was pretty awesome, and even one big western RPG dev used the exact same system in one of their major releases, so I'd say that means pretty good things. I liked the characters and the plot, had some pretty awesome music tracks. I like everything except linearity, yeah there was a lot of it, but there was still plenty great about the game.

Meh, I thought the combat was oversimplified to a fault. I felt too much was out of my control. It was fun to watch though.

I haven't played it. Resonance of Fate is also supposed to have a good combat system.

The combat in 13 wasn't anything spectacular. Its basically ATB except your characters are moving around on the battlefield, but you only get to control one. The story isn't anywhere near as bad as people claim it is.

FFXIII's combat was great and there was alot of strategy behind it as well. Graphics and soundtyrack were great. The story was good; the plot could have been improved but the great concept and great characters kept me interested.

Some complaints of mine are the the weapon upgrade system is crap, the optional missions at the end of the game could get tedious, and the story loses focus at the end of the game (but the gameplay also picks up near the end so it baklances out a bit.)

Eh... I thought XII's Combat was far superior and better. I enjoyed it more and had hoped XIII would branch on it and evolve it more. Instead it felt over simplified and became the "Auto-battle" system. I like XIII, but the combat isn't the shining moment. You can't say it's even fast pace just cause the characters attack "quickly" because the high HP count on enemies made battles annoying. If anything I give XII props for letting me make a sammich during those ridiculous HP battles like Hell Wyrm nad Yiazmat.

I wouldn't even agree on the combat, since the other two characters were on auto-battle, and the death of the character on point resulted in a game over. There's no reason at this point in game design why you can't switch characters on the go, like you could in X, and if they had to have auto-battle, why not have the entire party there? Why limit things to 3 even now?

I find that the data logs offer lots of insight and help with the story. It's not bad I think, and kind of a nice break where you're considered the villains in the beginning of the game, but really... it's kind of off for me. I almost want a classic telling of FF storyline :P

Out of all the FF games I liked the combat system of FF8 the best.

The only downside is drawing magic and long GF scenes, but I love the junction system.

I wonder that too. Why only 3? My guess is because the framerate would take a hit? :P Still, I don't know why you couldn't switch out like X and XII did when someone died, but then it probably would make the game easy? I dunno... To me, Auto-battle did ruin it a lot. I just had to mash X over and over, switch paradigms, mash X. Very rarely was it any better to select commands because the computer could just put the same input, why would I have to scroll through the menus just to get the same effect?

Im gonna buy it now and find out, I have heard nothing but bad things from people I know but its cheap now so... just deciding whether the collectors edition is worth the extra tenner :?. The one thing that makes me want to try it is the combat system tc, so you have a point.

I always love the "just mash X button" complaints.

Any old FF is much more guilty of "button mashing" than FFXIII is. In FFIV, FFVI or FFVII, ect. you could probably just choose the "attack" command 80%-90% of the time and get by fine, while in FFXIII that is not the case.

The battle system was terrible. They made it so simple its stupid. It can basicly be broken down into 3 or 4 step flowchart

1. buff/debuff

2. build gauge

if health < 40% switch ot heal group then go back to #2

if gauge is full switch to attack group then return to #2

if buff/debuff weres off return to #1

I beat the whole game using this simple strategy and it was a cakewalk. All you have to do is follow the chart and mash autoselect and your good.

FFXIII is one of the worst games I own. It has a terrible story, the worst battle system in a RPG, its bascilyy one straight line dungeon, and of course you got bad characters like Sazh, Hope, and Vanille. If it wasnt for the crazy production values this game would have gotten terrible reviews.

I didn't notice a difference from the 360 to PS3 version.

They are both had graphics and would look many times better if it were on the PC.

Considering the game had an "Auto-battle" function that pretty much stacked your commands needed based on the situation, yeah... it was simply "mash X." When I play the game, I know I can talk on the phone, mash X with one hand and still hold the phone with the other. Past FF games could be accused of it, but then again many FF games didn't make it to where you just had to mash X to win. You say that you can get by in FF IV, VI, or VII fine with X mashing, but that's wrong. I remember a dungeon in IV that forced you to not wear any metals. I remember bosses and enemies having weaknesses and you can kill them much faster and easier. Sure if you grind your way, which most people did probably by repeatedly entering/exiting dungeons or stocking up on potions before going in, you could defintely mash the attack command. Then there's Vi, unique characters with different abilities. I don't know who would mash attack with Sazh when Blitz commands were better. I know Cyan had a charging gauge. Locke was a thief, I stole everything I could, especially rare weapons from bosses and enemies. Magic for Terra was far better than Attacking, and Celes's magic absorbing abilities were a lifesaver for many battles. In VII you could equip materia that would make needing one to select "Attack" useless when you can mimic/counter opponents all without lifting a finger. :P XIII on the other hand, you can select "Auto-battle" and the game runs for you. It's almost more insulting than the auto-pilot XII gives you since you can not only control all characters, but the reward of seeing your setup of gambits run and go smoothly is very satisfying IMO.

I can make it through pretty much any RPG as long as the combat system works.

the lack of control offered during battles in this game took me completely out ofit.i didn't care. when iwon, itwas unsatisfying and when i lost it felt like it was mostly out of my hands. all i can do is enter manual commandsfor my leaderand then give vague tactics to the rest

anybody who didn't like the FF12 combat system was doing it wrong. I had one character under my own complete control and then very specific gambits set for my team mates that would make them act the way that i would have played anyway. it wasn't unnatural, it was simplymore efficient.

ff13's system makesmy team mates act in ways that i would never command them to andi spend half my time trying to correct them, or cover forthem.it's infuriating.

ff13 had agood story, great graphics and no soul. thats why it is the worst final fantasy i have ever played and guarantees that for the first time ever, i will rent the next ff before i buy.

i'm far happier with DragonQuest 9 on the DS than iam with FF13 on the PS3. That's saying something, isn't it?

I preferred FFX-2's version of the ATB system and FFXII's ATD system. I did like FFXIII ATB system though. It was one of the few decent features in that game.

No, it just has the good graphics. The battle system was just gussied up ATB. The paradigm shift was just there to needlessly complicate things. Switch from attack formation then to defensive when health is low. Not much different from past Final Fantasies when you think of it that way. Then libra and auto battle take the thinking part out of the game. What you're left with is little more than a mindless button masher. All flash, no substance.

which is why it was bad.

A genre needs to die because one game has scores just below 9/10? Keep that mentality and we will have no genres left to play.

I have to disagree. The combat is tops and the graphics are amazing. When compared to the Final Fantasies released in the past 10 years though, this one is without a doubt the best, imho.

I find 1990's turn based gameplay redundant in 2010.

Really evolve SE like Sega did with VC and Resonance of Fate.
