[QUOTE="Dystopian-X"][QUOTE="3ggman"]Oh and to whoever said 12 is a good game. Shame on you... 3ggman

Yes it is and very addicting once you get into it. It's problem is that it failed to be all that memorable. Seriously most ppl who hate on later FF games are either FF VII or VI fanboys or one of those who seem to think only the ''classics'' were good, not sure which group is worse.

I beat 1,2,4,6,7,8,9,10. I mostly liked all of them and no I am not a fanboy towards any of them. I played 12 and it was crap. Just plain crap. I also have friends who beat most of the previous FFs and never got to finish 12 cause it was just plain aweful.

Good to see you are not one of those which seem to prowl the boards. Many are doing the same and just bash the post IX FFs as those who played the 2D ones and hate on VII. Again I say the game was not that memorable and I know why you might not like it but if you get past that it has good gameplay and many of it's changes felt nice and fresh to the series.

Actually, look at any gaming website and they will say "FFVI pwns VII! VII is overrated!" Heck just look at this thread.

And I thought I listed Barret, but apparently I did not. But that's how great VII is - Yuffie alone pwns all VI characters.

This is how the list goes: 1. Final Fantasy VII 2. Final Fantasy IX 3. Final Fantasy X 4. Final Fantasy VIII 5. Final Fantasy VI

AHUGECAT

Like what gaming sites? Definately not this one, 1UP, or IGN if I'm not mistaken.

VII owns every game in existance. No JRPG can match up to it even after over 10 years.AHUGECAT
to you maybe not, but I liked Legend of Legaia, Golden Sun, Persona (Shin Megami Tensei) and Xenogears better. I like FFVII but not nearly as much as those. I like Legend of Legaia the best because of the fighting engine, Story, characters and the absorbing enemies for their powers using the Ra-Seru's. That was awesome. Now I will say that FFVII did make the JRPG genre more accepted to the rest of the world.

Before I get into it. I would like to say that Final Fantasy has been around for a very long time, and is about to have it's 13th installment. The franchise has been around to see several changes in the industry, and it also represents a part of it. Not to mention several different generations have jumped on the bandwagon that is Final Fantasy from several different games. In general, your first Final Fantasy game is your favorite(especially if you were playing it during it's high moment).

Final Fantasy VII was just different enough to get the exposure that the others did not have. It's not all about the characters and the storyline; but the world. The presentation alone was the perfect example of where the industry was heading too. More so then Final Fantasy VI, and that games was a technical masterpiece for the SNES. I still have the EGM in my hand from the late 90s that had a main article called the RPG Revolution, which made note of Final Fantasy VII being a game that not only help Japanese RPGs, but other imports make it to the US(not single handedly though). It was that same magazine(or the next) that followed up with Square EA releasing Bushido Blade 2, Xenogears, Brave Fencer Musashi, and Parasite Eve. Not to mention, because of FFVII we were able to enjoy Final Fantasy Anthology which re-released Final Fantasy VI and for the first time bought FFV to North America. For a Japanese RPG to be a commercial success in 1997 was obscene; and there had to be something good about FFVII to sell so many.

Is it good a great game? Of course! The best? My favorite RPG of all time is Morrowind. But definitely a frontier game to sit along with Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk Pro Skater, etc, etc. I can understand why someone says it isn't the best Final Fantasy(or JRPG for that matter), but to say it wasn't a great game is wrong.

But I think right now, Square Enix has said that Final Fantasy X(especially in Japan) has been labeled best Final Fantasy of all time. :P

IMO FFVIII is the best in the series, then comes IX>VII>VI>X>XII>IV. I haven't played the first three or FFV though...

Ive played them all, FF7 was the most timeless to me, even though FF6 for example used abit of a mix betwene Futirsm and Fantasy ... nothing approached what Final Fantasy 7 was themed as at the time... a good mix of Japanese and Western Culture...

To the guy that said FF7 was just cloud loving Aeris and then ranting on about Squall and his memories... think you got your games mixed up mate O_o

A lot of people who "hate" FF7 either never played it, or decided to jump on the bandwagon that "9 and 6 were better!" Final Fantasy VII is, by far the best in the series and without a doubt the best JRPG ever made. Personally, I don't know where all the love for 6 comes from- I thought 4, 5, and 9 were all better than 6 (other than 7, of course).

3 Games I really never got into. This is all my opinion of course, but: Chrono Trigger had terribly designed, incredibly long dungeons, and annoying sound effects, Earthbound was way too text based and open-ended to a fault, and Final Fantasy VI is probably the worst of the SNES 3 with its lack of focus, no main character, and broken couple of espers. Again, this is all opinion- I also didn't like Final Fantasy Tactics or Xenogears (which I felt like I really should've liked).

Final Fantasy VII was my first JRPG, so ill always have a soft spot for it. It may not have been the best story in the world, but the mechanics and the gameplay were solid across the board. Plus it looked pretty good at the time. 8 was also very good, as was 9 (although moreso if you appreciated the original final fantasys). It took me a while to get used to 10, but i grew to like the system in the end.

FF XII was an unmitigated disaster. Terrible story with no conclusion worth playing towards, mechanics that took away from the whole idea of Final Fantasy gameplay, horrendous enemy level-scaling, even the graphics werent all that impressive compared to 10 which came out a good few years beforehand.

Also im playing through the original 3 games right now (need to pick up 4,5 and 6 at some point).

1= pure win

2= ugh, how did they go from FF1 to this...?

3= pretty good

Not to mention Kefka isn't that great, anyways. He was a coward, weak and stupid. Sephiroth is more of a badass and Keftka is more evil but not a badass. More of a Sadam Hussein type evil.I never cared for him after he poisoned the water. He would of never of achieved any of those things like gaining the statues powers or getting past the heroes if it wasn't for the fact that he let everyone else do his work for him. Sephiroth tried to take on the world on his own. Kefka backstabbed the guy who was trying to achieve ultimate power and took it for himself at the last second.

If you dropped Kefka in a world where someone like The Emperor who had to be mentally ill to trust him wasn't there, Kefka would probably have gotten killed on the streets by some thug nobody.

I completely agree, I think the only reason people bash ff7 is because it's so big, and like every game people seem to gravitate to a side

Ehh, VII was pretty good. I won't lie, I did really like it, but I also don't think of it as the messiah of JRPGs its fans make it out to be. Quite honestly, I had more fun playing VIII, IX, X, DQVIII, and Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3.

FF7 is the mega overrated.

for god sakes, it has a good story, not great, its love story isnt that sad.

FF8 in the other hand.

talk abt the saddest ending sequence ever in an FF game.

cloud losing his loved is nothing like squalls battle trying to make sure his memories stay while trying to save his loved and all kind of stuff.

FF7 is like GTA:SA its fun and great and lots of mini games

FF8 is more like GTA4 serious but great story but without the lame gameplay.

FF8 IMO is probably the best with FFx-2 being the last.

yes, ive played nearly every single FF game out there except for FF11 and FF12 (i just couldn't bear the game)

and yes, u can see its been a while since ive played any FF game so my memories on the characters name may be pretty shallow.

muffintheduffin

I totally agree with you.

The thing is, ff8 had a tough act to follow ff7, but it wasnt ff7. Maybe thats why its not praised. But everyone who does know ff8, love it.
Just talking about it, is making me want to play it again and relive the memories.

FFVI seems to me like a bandwagon type game, as is the hate of FF7. I bet you hate Halo and GTA as well, right?

AHUGECAT

No that would be FFVII. You know the game that has all the Sephiroth fanboys, the people who loved it without even haved played any iterations before it. FFVII is the bandwagon type game. When you think of gaming bandwagon's you think of FFVII and Sephiroth in the same sentence.

Judging from this thread and many others (and websites), it's the exact opposite. It's cool to hate on FFVII, Halo, GTA and other games. FFVI is easily one of the worst in the series but for some reason it's liked, I guess because it's trendy. Kefka is such a horrible "character" my goodness. Sephiroth is popular because he is actually cool and badass. Kefka is a lame character, easily forgetable.

This post is a failure of epic proportions I love FFVII but VI is just as good in my mind . you said you played the game once, did you finish it did you get all the characters including mog, gogo and umaro. FFVI is the game that got me seriously into rpgs it is an excellent game even today I can play it and enjoy it I actually played through it again recently still so good. Kefka is a great villain I like sephiroth more but kefka is definatly not lame.

Judging by your opinion that FFVI is a bad game I am led to believe you don't play many rpgs. FFVII may take flak from some people just because of its immense popularitybut I don't think any rpg player actually thinks its a bad game just that they don't understand why its so praised all the time. To actually say final fantasy 6 is bad its just insane to me.

LOL yeah thats right KEFKA was actually evil, sephiroth was all whiney and insane he was never really evil not on Kefkas level as for that you obviously mistake inabbility to fight and unwillingness to fight kefka was more interested in commiting evil deeds then fighting, Sephiroth fought to much because of his fighting he was stopped, Kefka on the otherhand kept working for his evil and his power stabbing people in the back, stealing it...ect kefka was the better villian as for that he was the harder villian surfice to say if you didn't super power your characters then kefka tower was actually a challenge but Sephiroth was easy even with lvl 50 or so characters with hardly any mastered materia.

That game marked the beginning of a downhill trend of FF games for me that has persisted to this farking day. Not to mention the way SE is blatantly pandering off of the nostalgia of VII's fans. The game's legacy (cell-phone games, CG movies, spin-offs) is a perfect example of what happens when you take fan-service way too goddamn far. Also, I cannot, for the life of me, see how "Sephi" (*wretch*) is badass. Yes, he stabbed a girl in the back. If stuff like that was all that was needed to make you the epitome of evil badassery, we'd have oh-so-many more "mostest badass EVAR!" videogame characters. The man was a emo momma's boy for cripe's sakes.

Due to not being able to read during the days of the snes, the first JRPG and Final Fantasy I ever played was X. Hopefully that helps to make me a little less biased than those who played VI or VII first.

Both Final Fantasy VI and VII were good. My personal favourite between the two would be VI because I actually become attached to the characters and found the game more entertaining(Sabin`s Blitzes were awesome despite being simple to do).

The thing that held VII back was the characters. Cloud and Sephiroth especially. No matter what anyone says, I found those characters to be two of the worst in video game history due to their ability to spend THE ENTIRE GAME COMPLAINING. Cid and Barret are two of my favourite characters in video game history but everyone elsein that game just got on my nerves. Plus the death of Aeris was not sad.

People complained about 7 when it came out. There just weren't web forums and blogs to let the whole world know how upset you were with 7 after the greatness that was 6.

I agree with you all the way FF IX was the PSX FF title. Heck I enjoyed FFXII more than FFVII. Its a great game I just hyped it like most.

People calling themselves fans, but hating on some games from the same franchise come on. The fact is FF franchise (the main one) is probably one of the best out there. I mean they are at their 13th game, and it's been a solid AAA franchise overall. It easily matches the kinds of long runing franchise like... Zelda and Mario.

I could just never get into VII. I tried on numerous occasions, but I just found it... boring? I don't know, perhaps it was because I came onto the FF scene a little later and didn't experience the game when it first came out, so I never got the "wow" factor from it. I never finished it either, but I imagine I'll get to that sometime in the future.

the thing about ff7 is that it really could have been a one disc game. all the good parts of the game are in midgar, after which youre just playing 'chase the dude with the big sword' while being introduced to and parting with a bunch of underdeveloped filler characters.

It still is a very good game and was one of the best when it was released too. I played it for the first time back then and I was like WOW.

I've never understood the way Final Fantasy VII is praised like some holy grail. I found other entries in the series much better, namely VI and IV, and I had more fun with X than VII. I suppose I'm in the minority of opinions.

I love the FF series. Personally I still find VII to be the best one. However, I really loved IX and X as well. I just hope that Square is going to make a great game with XIII.

I'm with Jeff Gerstmann on this one. The commericals for this game were the best part.

Let's get something straight: FF VII is not the best game ever, but it's by no means a bad or boring game. The story and characters are interesting, and the you can believe the world. The battle system was hardly the deepest, but it did its job and did it well. Sephiroth was a great villain, and the story was fascinating, unpredictable and engrossing. FF VI is, in many ways, equal to VII in terms of quality. The characters were great, the story was fantastic and the battle system was great too. In my opinion, the world seemed a little less believeable than VII's, but it was still fascinating. The 2 games are both great. However it's undeniable that its impact was nowhere near the same level as FF VII's. FF VII's greatness comes from the fact that it brought something new. I'll never forget the atmosphere created by the music and beautiful scenery. As a European, VII was the 1st Final Fantasy available to me, so perhaps the fact that it was my first FF game has something to do with it, but it brought something new, it tried to tell an interesting and engaging story, one that is still as engaging today as it was when it was first released (although it has been raped by follow ups like Crisis Core (Advent Children was good though)). RPG fans owe a lot to FF VII. I doubt we'd have seen half as many JRPGs in the West today if FF VII had flopped. So you may think its over-rated, but give credit where credit is due. It may not be your favourite Final Fantasy, but it helped bring them to others and helped shape the series into what it is today (although that's not such a good thing *COUGH*FF X, X-2, XI*COUGH*)

VII owns every game in existance. No JRPG can match up to it even after over 10 years.AHUGECAT
what he said. imo ff8 was cool, expecially the card game, but the game was nothing in comparision to ff7

FF7 was the beginning of me hating FF games. I think it's where Square lost what made the games great.. personally all FF before 7 are the best imo, hands down. now it's all graphics and missing the charm / spirit of the originals.

People who think Final Fantasy 7 is one of the greatest games of all time probably never played an RPG game before that one. It was like that with me, but the more JRPG games I've played made me realize how over appreciated FF7 was. There had been many games, whether JRPG or WRPG that have surpassed it in attributes that make the game so memorable. As of now, the only thing that you can give the game credit for was its musical score which was damn good. FF7 does not deserve the royal treatment that it gets.

I am just going to state that if you read every critic review of FF7 and then FF8, it was unverisally accepted that FF8 was a better game. I am not being biased, I am just stating what the critics said. The problem is there are way too many fanboys who are blind to this. Actually worse than blind because atleast blind people know they can't see.

FF7 is nothing but a diluted ff6. For the life of me i can not understand why people praise ff7 so much. If ff7 is excellent then ff6 is godly. I mean the storyline of ff7 is a copy and edit job of ff6's storyline.

I wouldnt say its the best rpg of all time. I loved Skies Of Arcadia almost just as much as FF7. FF8 deserves way more credit then it receives also i thought it was just as good as 7

Top spot in the Final Fantasy franchise should go to VI, IX or Tactics. None of the other FF games really even compare to those 3, imo.
