@mmmwksil: Thanks for the in depth response. Gameplay is the primary reason why I named the jrpgs that I like over FF, so I'll give the ones that you mentioned a shot (maybe I'll even try X again, though I can't stand any of the characters or how dumb blitz ball is).

Zelda.

Final Fantasy has slowly descended into emo androgynous dude hell.

I think FF is at its best when they focus on the gameplay over the horrendous stories. That's not to say all the stories are bad, but they do tend to place an emphasis on them and spectacle in recent years.

This needs to be emphasized more.

Though...

Unfortunately, Final Fantasy has had pretty terrible gameplay too starting with FF4. A game I found so bad it turned me away from jRPGs for over 5 years. The ATB, especially the NES version was an absolute mess, the character system was nigh non-existant and allowed for no customization and the fact that you so frequently swapped your cast resulted in very little attachment to your characters, the encounter design was overall lousy and I can only think of one memorable boss fight, and the combat mechanics were seriously lacking compared what the Wizardry franchise offered, especially Wizardry 6, which was released one year prior.

Both have fallen from grace.

I've only really liked 2 Final Fantasy games, 7 and 9.

On the other hand I've liked or loved all the Zelda games I've played, so the clear winner for me is Zelda.

@aigis: I dont think theyre bad, but i agree Skyward Sword is much better.

From a design standpoint I really like TP, but I hate wolf link. It kinda ruined it for me. ALBW was just boring imo, way too easy for a Zelda game, it has to be one of the easiest.

@aigis: Sound like a sadistic to me. A clear sign of a Zelda fan.

While I don't agree about VI and VII (former is just plain bad, I could write whole articles on the why; the latter is overhyped to high heaven despite being mediocre), if you found them to be okay that's cool.

I think FF is at its best when they focus on the gameplay over the horrendous stories. That's not to say all the stories are bad, but they do tend to place an emphasis on them and spectacle in recent years.

After playing all of them (several times a piece I might add, save for the MMOs):

  • IV (melodramatic though it may be, the game is structured very similarly to IX)
  • X (I know you said not to mention it, but even with its weak plot and bad voice acting the gameplay is one of the better takes on turn based combat)
  • X-2 (yes the plot is ridiculous, but this is the best take on their Job System, far better than their last attempt with V)
  • XII (the International release, which will soon be available on PS4, is a far cry from the vanilla version we got back in 2006)

IX is my personal favorite game of all time, but I am the first to admit its not a great game. It's slow, too easy, and despite a fun cast is not a great plot. If you ever want to try other FF games, try those I mentioned. If they don't do it for you, then the series is not for you. Which is fine, too.

That last part is an interesting point. Classic FF gets a bad rap for weak writing and storytelling, but what they often got right were the world and characters. They crafted an interesting world that fans wanted to explore, and an interesting cast of characters that got fans invested. It didn't bother fans that the plots were often just the usual save-the-world cliches. What mattered were the interesting worlds and memorable casts.

@Jag85:

I can agree with this. Even newer games (such as XIII) could make interesting worlds. Say what one will about the plot, the world they built with Cocoon and how it was this automated "utopia" run by mechanical "gods" was an interesting idea. A different approach to this world might have made the whole game a much better experience. Sadly...

The Legend of Zelda. It's not even close.
