Hope you have a lot of time on your hands.
Sounds like something I'll never be doing! But a two thumbs up for whoever is up for the challenge. It's good to hear that the four year wait will pay off in playtime.

It really bums me out how much hate this game gets. The series is pretty special to me so it's a real sucker punch when these kinds of comments get used. Anyway, it's already been discussed that the combat system isn't exactly grind friendly (not to say you can't grind) but the game will be more quickly paced experience (along the lines of FFX).Out of those 140+ hours, 120 hours are pure grinding. Talk about wasting time.

Surely you know better than to take anything seriously in SW. 90% is just bullsh*t posts anyway. I hope you'll enjoy FF XIII.
Doesn't you do so in most games?Out of those 140+ hours, 120 hours are pure grinding. Talk about wasting time.

I hated FFIV DS but somehow I can't bring myself to sell it. :(
Anyways, I doubt I'll be doing that. I still haven't beaten those silly weapons in FFVII. And I probably never will.
The first game i ever 100%'d was FFX. This will be the second.
Mainly because besides this and ME2, im not going to buy that many games untill the end of the year (for pricing reasons).

Things like this nearly make me resent posting here. Nearly.
Nowadays, people such as the above use the term "grind" to refer to any semi-repetitive component of a game which does not, on its own, progress the plot. However, if you aren't a mouth-breathing, brain-damaged monkey.. you'd see that nearly every game ever made has some sort of grind. In Super Mario, you grind by jumping on turtles until you reach the flag. In Halo, you grind by killing hordes of the flood until you reach the big battle at the end of the level. In Zelda you grind your way through long dungeouns until you can hit the boss behind the huge locked door. There is always a "grind" in the sense that there's always $@!%-to-kill and stuff-to-do that isn't a huge boss or epic battle. Some games disguise this grind better than others, but the ultimate result is the same - you will be killing non-essential stuff in any game that involves killing since it serves as a pacing mechanic. Do you want a game that's nothing but a collection of boss battles and plot? Might as well go watch a movie if you're looking for two hours of thrills.
Final Fantasy is an RPG, a genre which is based on the growth and development of a protagonist and it's group. In FF, you rarely have to go out of your way to kill the same monsters solely for the purpose of levelling up. Usually, the main plot of the story can be completed using the experience gained just playing the game straight through. You don't need to be level 100 to beat the final boss in the main plot - and this has been the case in every. single. FF. game. People who enjoy the franchise and the genre go out of their way to become stronger because it's REWARDING to see more damage, to get cooler weapons, to fight the true hardest bosses. We enjoy this "grind" because it gives us access to a far greater portion of the game then we'd otherwise see.
Your statement that so much optional content is a "waste of time" is just proof of your bias. It's okay to not be a fan of a genre, but to make a statement as you did shows a hell of a lot of that bias. Like it or not, FF13 will be packed with near twenty times more value than 99% of games this gen, and those of us eagerly awaiting it's release will be enjoying some of the best content this gen has to offer.
I remember trying to make it to 100% in FF7 and FF10, both saves were deleted, in FF7, it was just random memory card thingy, maybe it was a virus or something and for FF10 it was from my stupid friend who overwrotehis early save over mine.
There is a curse going on with me and FF 100% completion :P
that's cool, finally long good game, i always finish a final fantasy once, then on my second playthrought i try to get everything
Dude, Final Fantasy IV on DS was epic. The only think I though was lacking was more voiced over cutscenes.I hated FFIV DS but somehow I can't bring myself to sell it. :(

Only 140 hours? Pfft. Why would you spend $60 on a game you'll only spend 140 hours on? Such a waste of money. Pokémon is only $30 and it's over 200 hours long. God SE, stop being lazy.
Well that's is great news for any fans of the series considering we have waited a while for just a released date. I spent over one hundred hours for most role playing game to begin with so this shouldn't really be anything new to me. Considering that amount of time, hopefully there are a lot of sidequests for this game.

I have over 500 hours in pokemone pearl. regardless, 140 hours is a lot of time (yes I know you were being sarcastic)
Because of crap like the Sunflower sword which takes an unrealistic amount of time for a single item?Excellent this is one of the reasons im such a fan of FF games.
jwsoul
and like all past Final Fantasies it will still only take 15-20 hours to beat the main storyline maybe less if there is alot more CGI and ingame cinematics then usual.
I'm skeptical as well. 100% could mean how long it takes to grind for rare item drops to create ultra-powerful weapons that can only be used at the very end of the game.
It took me 170 hours to complete 95% of FFX, yet the main campaign was only a fraction of that time. I actually got the sunflower sword in FFXII, boy what a waste of time that was, by the time I got it, there was nothing left but the last dungeon.
Im not really a %100 completion guy.
Ill stick to the main story first and do the fun side missions later.
Sounds good to me. I put 117 hours into my first playthough of FFXII and I'm nearing 100% so I have no problems with that at all. I doubt I'll get 100% on my first playthrough though. Hell I put 119 hours in P3 and 108 hours into P4 on my first playthroughs and didn't come close to 100% so length is never an issue for me.
I remember in FFXII to get some of the ultimate weapons you had to NOT open specific treasure chests throughout the game. If you opened just one of them, you couldn't get some of the char. ultimate weapons on that play through. Even people who wrote the guides would say "We're not exactly sure which chests they are, so we recommend you avoid all in this area."mythrolThe reason they didn't know is because the chests were randomized in FFXII. I really hope they go back to set chests for FFXIII.
