Final Fantasy XIII's hate on this board is ridiculously unjust.

I think the linearity is more or less similar to other FF titles, but it's just not disguised at all. Playing FFV shortly after FFXIII and hearing the criticisms of linearity I paid closer attention to how linear the game really was. They were virtually the same as far as dungeon design went; skinny narrow paths with short offshoots leading to treasures. It's just that other games separated maps into different, well, maps. They were also a lot more "zoomed in." FFXIII's maps are basically one giant map with the path laid out fairly obvious for you. It just makes the linearity that the series has always had a lot more obvious.

I also played FFX directly after FFXIII and found it to be even more restrictive. The paths were narrower and the offshoots were fewer. I definitely think that FFXIII could use to be a lot less linear. But I also think that people forgive a lot of other games for being practically if not equally as linear without realizing it.

Edit: Oh and FFXIII has better music than FFX, sunleth aside. That I'm sure of. :)

hakanakumono
I agree, but FF13 being linear isn't a problem to me. I just feel like the other areas in the game should be able to make up for it such as story and battle system, which neither did to me.I still think FFX-2 battle system is better and my reason on not liking the battle system I posted it earlier, but hopefully they can make it even better.

It takes control a way from the player thats a form of dumbing down. Spamming X with the occasional L1 in battles that take about 5 seconds to beat aint my idea of fun. In every other FF combat system I could plan a head. I could select each individual attack, magic spell, Item, summon for all characters. None of this auto battle crap. I was FREE to do whatever I want. This combat system is VERY restrictive.

Ofcourse it's not just combat. Towns have been dumbed down into save points. Really? Barely any NPC interaction and they call this an RPG let alone a JRPG. Vanille is probably the worst aspect of this game. For realz. She narates the frikkin storyline with her incredibly annoying poorly acted voice acting.

110million

That doesn't very well describe FFXIII. In fact, it doesn't sound like you've played the game considering you can select each individual attack as well as magic spells. Auto battle is an optional feature. Furthermore, the only way to use items is to select themselves and summons are one per character. You even have direct control on the attacks the summons perform themselves (when you go into "Gestalt" mode).

I'm starting to think people who say you can mash X through every battle have not played more than an hour or two. :| Not only do you not have to choose auto-battle and you are free to do whatever, but many fights require more than mashing auto-battle, it would get you killed in a ton of fights.

On top of that, the complaint about just pressing X in a battle to win isn't a big complaint. What if pushing that X button is fun? In shooters, you hold down the "shoot" button and aim. Simple, never changes, but fun. Just complaining about having to press a button is a bit farfetched IMO. And as you say, some of the harder battles would destroy you if you just mashed the button.

Because of the delay's the ever increasing hype, I can understand how much disappointment there is for FFXIII. It's not at the top of the heap when it comes to FF games and RPGs in general, and I believe that is what many fans were expecting after so long.

Despite all that, I had fun playing the game. The battle system, music, graphics and missions were very well done. I've already forgotten much of the story, which says a lot about how impacting it is. A few of the characters were interesting, but not outstanding.

Comparing RPGs with First Person Shooters isn't a very good comparison now is it. Two very different forms of gameplay and for the record their is far more in terms of gameplay in movement, aiming and shooting then their is to just pressing the x button and and allowing the game to play itself. Neither did I say you have to mash the x button in every battle in FFXIII but there is just far more emphasis in doing that than most other FFs. FFXIII isn't really a hard game. It's just the fact that when your party leader dies it's gameover. There isn't many situations where all 3 of your party members die at once.

I don't see why people use the same old excuses for it not being a good game in every thread with FF in it, like "it has melodramatic acting" or "it's so boring that I fall asleep playing it"

Well people complained about FF12 not connecting with the player enough in the main campaign, and I think FF13 totally fixed that giving FF fans one of the best FF experiences( storytelling wise) , also people who complain about it being boring must seriously just be trolling, as this game has the definitive, most flawless, rpg battle system, out of any game out there on the market.

So I propose this to you SW, are you actually 100% serious on your claims of Final Fantasy XIII being a totally lame game, or are you just trolling ? Because for me It's one of the best games I have played in a very long time, and I play alot of games :D

Megaman5364

The story for FF13 is by far the worst part of the game I didn't feel at all connected with any of the characters the dialogue was absolutly chessy and laughbale in some parts . The gameplay was good although it got pretty tiresome fighting enemy after enemy along the corridors of death.I was extremly disapointed.

I felt more connected with the characters in FFVI, thats right little pixel sprites are more interesting than any of these high-def dorky emo characters.. Sazh though, he was pretty good character.

true, FF13 isnt anywhere near my favourite in the series, but its an improvement over FF12 which I hated. the gameplay wasnt a "mash the attack button" type of thing, there was strategy, though sometimes it did become boring. I felt the story was good, but the storytelling , the way the story was told, wasn't very good, and was quite confusing at times, im all for mystery, but not when its confusing even after youve been told something/ regarding the linearity, it was linear , no doubt about it, alot of times it felt like you were walking down corridors, someone here mentioned that FF5 was also linear, it was just better disguised, the thing is, FF13 isn't on a cartridge with a few Megabytes of storage, its on a blu ray , and I would assume the budget for FF13 was much , much higher, so one would expect bigger worlds. if the story telling was better, I have a feeling alot of people would be willing to overlook the linearity. overall FF13 is a good game, I just think it disappointed a lot of people, given the time it took the develop.

It's just the fact that when your party leader dies it's gameover. There isn't many situations where all 3 of your party members die at once.

I wasn't comparing the genre, I was comparing the complaint itself. There is decision behind the X button, i.e. what that button will lead to, so it isn't just pressing X for the sake of pressing it. It could lead to magic, item use, tech use, summoning or attack; and mashing X, as I said, is not a valid strategy in the tougher battles. You will need to manually pick most of your moves, auto-attack isn't an option. Anyway, if one doesn't like auto-attack, then don't use it. It's like the gambit system in FFXII, I barely ever used it myself in the first playthrough.

Personally, of the FFs, I felt FFXIII had the least emphasis on pushing X. In the older ones (especially the turn-based ones) you had to press X for all of the characters for every single move.

I love FFXIII... it has been the first FF that i've actually been able to play without getting annoyed at the combat. It cut out a lot of what I didn't like about JRPGS... and the NPCS all had interesting things to say. The story-line was pretty good. The characters even developed as the game progressed. The combat was strategic which i loved.

I agree about FF13 and LO being better than each other in certain parts. Like FF13s combat sytem and graphics are better than LO's and LO's art direction, characters and story are better than FF13s but overall id go with LO. As for persona ive never played the series but heard great things but i do kno cows like to overrate rpg exclusives on playstation platforms i mean games like disgea, Valkyria Chronicles and demons soul get more attention than LO and TOV thats ludicrous imo

I've never seen Disgaea overrated, though. I'd say it's a thoroughly overlooked game, at least Disgaea 3. Demon's Souls is awesome, IMO, and I'm no cow.

Hated the story, characters, and battle system. The game is extremely linear for too long. I don't mind linear games, as FFX was linear for a time. But the game was just incredibly boring this way. I went in wanting to like this game but it was like the game itself didn't want me to like it. But hey, it looked nice, and the music was good too. I'll give it that much.

I don't think the critical acclaim can be attributed to it being exclusive to a Sony platform though.

Terrible game with terrible cliches. I wouldn't mind if it tried something actually unique, but most of it is executed so horribly. The characters are very run of the mill, the game is too linear for an RPG nowadays, the story is cliche to Hell and back, and the list goes on. There's nothing to praise about this game for me except maybe some of the art and music.

I traded the game in for credit towards a wii. The game just had some flaws that I didn't enjoy. I would have liked the combat to be a bit slower and more turn based so I could enjoy the fight and graphics. The characters were also unlikeable from lighting having a stuck up attitude to that crybaby boy who reminded me of tidus *shivers*

I think it's justified.

The levels are to linear and WAY to drawn out to be any sort of fun. I'm at about 21 hours in and the levels just seem to drag on forever in a grind of useless battles. Each battle bearly effects the next as character stats aren't persistant. The combat system itself ended up being way to shallow just to look flashy. A lot of that game is just long, boring bloat that really ruins the experiance.

Hell the game is bearly an 8.0 in my book.

Great graphics, music and combat system.

What annoys me the most is... (NOT the linearity, though that still is bad) the lack of character development and... well below average story and the final boss fight was flat out bad. And the ending... Ugh!

Am sure that the next Final Fantasy will take on board the issues with this one..
Like the grinding and linear play and lack of exploration.

Even still, people are nit picking on small details.
The game looks GORGEOUS and is still worth playing for OLD and NEW Final Fantasy fans.

The art and designs really are brilliant.

This is a good point actually. the devs admitted to making it more linear than the map design originally was so players wouldn't get "lost" (or something like this). What a load of crap.

Really? They did? Really? I don't remember that at all.

I don't know about you but doing nothing but walking in a line, fighting and watching cut scenes starts to really get dull. The combat is okay, but it mostly boils down to just constantly selecting auto battle until you need to heal. It's boring. It wasn't a completely bad game, but the only impressive part was the graphics. Half the cast is unlikable and have no discernible motivation for most of the game, the script is cheesy and they really dropped the ball with exposition. And like I said earlier the game boils down to following an extremely linear path while fighting needlessly long and drawn out battle that involve doing little else other than scannign the enemy, select auto-battle and healing as needed. I can't imagine anyone really liking it that much unless they like really like Superficialness and pretentiousness.

I agree. In no way does it look bad enough to deserve all the hate it recieves. But hey, popular games are always targets.

Good game, just not as good as other FF's. Story was interesting, but not the best. Lore was great, but the characters (for the most part) were a little dissapointing.

I liked FFXIII very much i think it's most beautiful game this gen. For those who complain, there Versus coming that gameplay already looks much more open

All you do is fight, walk and watch a cutscene. It gets so repetitive. I haven't completed it yet, but as soon as got to that bit where the world opens up, I got bored.

Well, I didn't necessarily get bored. What actually happened was I continued to follow the story marker and got to a boss that killed me in 5 seconds. So I went online only to find out the boss is nigh on impossible to beat unless you grind levels to max your characters at that point.

And to be honest, I can't be ****ed.

Man i really don't think its because of how popular it is. Most of the people absolutely love Final Fantasy, and they have played through each game. Every person who complains (me inclusive) have had their reasons justified. NO-ONE complained about the graphics, when you say "it doesn't look bad enough" thats the first thing i believe you are referring to. The complaints are coming from very limited battle system, Character development, Linearity and a sub par story.

Major issue with FF13 is that it seems it was written with a 13 year old girl in mind. And the first 20 hours are a complete boring grind fest.

No it is not unjust. Square is asking a lot out of players to invest 20-25 hours of their time before they can do an actual side quest or explore a world. It's a great game after that threshold, but before it is only at decent-good status.

As usual the poll is disingenuously worded. Where is the option for "Absolutely hate it".

It's got a stupid story, it's more linear than any game of its type before, the characters are terrible and the levelling up system is a one way road and totally and utterly useless. It may as well do it for you. Boring, long winded, pretentious and dull. Apart from that, great.

Indeed, even the 1.0 reviews I've read say that the game at least looks amazing. I think most people have justified reasons for not liking it if that's their fancy, it's just that not everyone decides to explain it in a way that isn't in someway "inflammatory". Same can be said about people on the other side.

So again only the graphics is impressive.... Far out it has the best graphics for a console game.. no other game matches it, but the rest was unimpressive. :( Its so unfortunate I was really hyping this game from 5 years ago.

This I don't quite get. FFX is far more linear than FFXIII (though I liked FFX far more as well). At least in FFXIII, you have Gran Pulse.
