The first part of Crysis isn't generic... but as soon as you get to that underground anti-gravity alien level (which was horrible,) It becomes a linear shooter from there on.

i wish there was a console shooter with as much freedom as crysis :( if you mixed the freedom of far cry 2 and the destructibility of red faction guerilla you'd get pretty near crysis

That's not the problem with his logic. The problem with his logic is that he's trying to use Youtube videos as a basis for his argument about the graphics of a game which is meant to be experienced on Monitors about six times the resolution minimum, and oh yes, we all know about the quality issue.

So, yes, his argument failed before he even posted it.

Far Cry 2 didn't really have real freedom, it had closed in environments.

you think i haven't seen this video already? even when i used all the powers and guns available to me, the game still just wasn't very fun imo. in fact i found the original far cry to be a lot more fun(well the first half anyway, until all the mutant bullcrap which is when i just stopped playing it). call of duty 4, while its extremely linear and pretty much tells you what to do, its fun as hell, and its linearity compliments the narative and the overall gameplay of the game. sorry but i still find cod4 to have a much better campaign than crysis.

Fair play dude he plays like i want to play at that game! My 1st playthrough i was extreme stealth now im going for a mixture of Stealth and Tricks like jumping over a jeep and shooting the petrol can at the back. I wanna try using maximum strength on a jeep thats heading towards me, to see if i can knock the thing backwards with my fist :)

I swear some people are taking tips from the creationists at times, they watch the graphics and game play; yet they still insist it is as generic as COD games and that the graphics aren't anything special.

I suppose some people prefer to be spoon fed their experience rather than be given some tools and figure out how to apply them creatively, if those people make up the majority I mourn for the future of gaming.

Its funny how as soon as an open world game like FarCry 2 appears on consoles, its called repetitive and nobody is allowed to be creative in the way they approach missions. Yet Crysis is praised to no end for being an open world game with endless ways of completing every mission. Heaven-forbid a PC exclusive could be repetitive.

Unfortunatley Far Cry 2's design has fundemental flaws, and a 'sandbox design' that is far more garish and unrefined than Crysis's, despite it being so different in nature (yet comparable).

edit - I will elaborate on this.

To quote myself:

The problem is there arent many options of approach.

Level design is quite restrictive most of the time; there are usually 3 ways of approaching a location, which boils down to - sneak for a few kills - spotted - (or initially -) go rambo - persist; due to a lack of actual stealth mechanics and alert systems. Problem is that these scenarios repeat and repeat, and become more and more mundane.

Its not like Crysis where you have a large linear level - an objective and a huge scope of options to approach this one objective in a level.
Its the opposite.
You have a single massive open enviroment with a huge amount of small missions with more restrictive ways of approaching.

Its just not very good open world design....

Even things like the complete lack of a global a.i makes the world boring and mundane - a stark contrast to a game like STALKER.skrat_01

The problem is its design template is fundementally repedative.

Giving a player a set of objectives that play out in a similar fashion - for the entire course of the game, then have the player approach them with a variety of tools will get mundane quickly.

Why?

Because the objectives dont have the variables to make approaching things any more interesting than the last, and players tend to pick a play sty-le and work with it - repeating it again and again doesn't make it any better.

Another issue is certain playsty-le punish the player. Want to go in stealthy? Its a waste of time, a few kills in you have alerted the gaurds and are engaged in a fire fight until the area is cleared.

Things like the frequent checkpoints aggravated the design too. Frustration between moving between missions makes the player *not* think of prerperations or planning, they are too busy dealing with immediate threats. There is no build up or suspense.

sigh.

Its a pity as there is so much damn potential.skrat_01

Now of course certain fanboys would have such bias towards an exclusive like Crysis, but this is more of the case of Far Cry 2 being fundamentally flawed. This is why it has copped so much flack, next to titles like Crysis.

Hell saying that, I thought Far Cry 2 was set to completely push the genre in new directions as far as design is concerned - admittedly I was pretty crushed by the final result. I suppose ArmA 2's design might be rather striking in a similar regard that FC2 promised... however I'll have to play it before judging fully.

I haven't played it; but from what I've heard it is rather repetitive. What relevance does the platform the game is on have to whether or not a game is repetitive? Far Cry 2 has been criticised everywhere; whether that be on PC, 360 or PS3. It isn't being picked on just because it is on consoles.

what a strange point to make, people make judgements on the games' individual merits not based on which system theyre on. what has being a pc exclusive got to do with anything? are you implying that if far cry 2 was a pc exclusive people would overlook the repetitive nature of the game? if youd have played both games youd know they are very, very different

But really, Crysis looks like a good game but I'm done with people talking about it. Same with Halo, and Uncharted.

I could post a still image of Crysis and it would look better. At least then you could see WTF you are looking at. Besides, why would I post a video myself? Me posting a better video or not doesn't change the fact that that video sucks. You can't see anything. You want me to post better? ok, here.

That better. At least you can see it.

I don't need to post a better video for what I said to stand. Anybody that clicks on that link should be smart enough to know that's a crap video. My pic without motion is better because you can actually see it.

P.S. So that there is no :cry:ing, here is a better video (GT review) http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-hd-crysis/28457 (couldn't link it thanks to glitchspot).

The console-only detractors of Crysis are usually unaware that the game has aliens in it. As far as they know, Crysis is a screenshot of palm trees. So, I'd take the "generic" statements with a grain of salt.

I disagree, in motion it still blows everything out of the water, it handles well, it plays well, the graphics are the best of any game ever made to date, and will remain until the next top PC only game takes the crown once again... the onyl issue with crysis is the length of the game, which is too short.

I disagree, in motion it still blows everything out of the water, it handles well, it plays well, the graphics are the best of any game ever made to date, and will remain until the next top PC only game takes the crown once again... the onyl issue with crysis is the length of the game, which is too short.

And the fact you need to own optimus prime to play it :P i need a new processor, more ram, more cpu and a new video card to get the recommended settings grr, I'll have to wait a few years until i get a new pc :(

Crysis is generic and nothing special.

Nice arguement, i especially liked the part in paragraph 14.

Rofl, I'm more fond of how expertly referenced each point is with certifiable evidence.

But, as you know it has been discussed time and time again on these boards, building a pc to max crysis doesnt really cost that much now days. Sure a little more than a ps3 if you include an operating system but not much more. Heck, here in the UK, you can now get a GTX260 for £100.

Really? Time to upgrade! :D Yeah it's really not expensive to run Crysis anymore, or any PC game max for that matter. By fair means of foul you can get an OS, I feel a little robbed by paying £55 for Vista 64 OEM :(

No other fps lets me play like that.
