For nextgen should I go pc? Wouldnt a good gaming pc now do better than what a next gen console from sony or microsoft would do?

I think im just gonna borrow money from a student loan or something to build me a gaming computer. Probably $1000 budget. Would a $1000 budget gaming pc hold up to what the nextgen consoles will do?

What pc exclusives do I have to look forward to that blows console games away in the graphics department?

In all honesty, I have considered the same thing. Because if you look at what a new gaming PC would run if you put it together yourself, Im betting you could get a major rig for 1K tops. Versus the PS4 or XBOX 720 or whatever they will be called which I bet will both push the boundries of $500 at launch. Then consider all of the functionality that a PC brings to you. Gaming, social networking, music downloads, STEAM, research, bill paying, online shopping, etc. The only thing that holds me back is the whole M/KB set up, but I bet I'd get used to it after a month or so. Also figure that yeah sure maybe every 2-4 years you may need to upgrade your graphics card or add some RAM, that is still cheaper in the long run than a new console.

No sign of the next gen consoles coming any time soon, and no way of knowing if the next gen will be another GPU arms race or if the precedent Nintendo set this gen will be followed. Judge the PC on it's own merits, are the games there that interest you? If so, go for it, if you prefer what's coming up on your current platform then stick with that.

there's no sign of there being a next gen console so PC is the only option really.

The only thing that holds me back is the whole M/KB set up, but I bet I'd get used to it after a month or so.

kungfuchaos
Why does the M/KB setup still hold people back when they can just as easily get a gamepad running on the PC now for the majority of todays PC games? (excluding RTS games obviously...) And it really wouldn't take you a month to get used to... It took me less than an hour to see marked improvement in my FPS skills when i went from just keyboard only controls to mouse and keyboard controls in Quake 2. I can't see it being much different going from controller to mouse and keyboard... at least with the dual analog controller you are already experienced with 3D Look easily accessible. Something which was practically impossible with arrow keys and page up/page down keys!

Actually next gen consoles will be far better in hardware than the very best you can get on PC today, since technology will be 3-4 years ahead and more advanced than what it is today That is a simple fact and no, a 1000$ PC will be ancient when next gen systems arrive, same for any PC today

We won't see another console from Sony and Microsoft for another few years, with Nintendo probably coming out with a new system by 2012. If you were to get a decent gaming PC right now, you'll still be enjoying it once the next generation starts.

The funny thing, is that there's actually more game variety on the PC. :P

And to TC, we have no idea how consoles will be next gen, for all we know they'll just go extremely casual/mainstream, so if you feel comfortable with the PC, I say go for it.

FPS, TPS, FPS, JRPG, no idea... Fable 1 and 3, adventure (?), no idea, adventure (?) Ya, I think PCs have all those genres covered.

Are those genres?

Don't listen to the silly fanboy, TC.

PC will get you better graphics, better performance, a larger number of AA and AAA exclusives, as well as the best version of most multi-plats, AND it will do everything a PC normally does, except better.

Umm... if you're talking about graphics, consoles are top of the line when the release, except for a few exceptions like the wii.

EDIT: in short if you can't wait for the next generation of consoles and want the best graphics right now, get a pc.

A $1000 computer with solid cooling can keep you running games for a solid 5 years, because you can always overclock, or just replace the videocard at the 3 year mark. Trust me, I used the same piece of junk for 5 years and I was able to run most games on at least medium at around 30 FPS (until I built my new one). That's basically what most consoles can do.

Wrong, Even when the 360 was first released in 2005 it's gpu was only thing ahead of the curve(usingunified architecture). But months later ATI released their next line gpu's that had the same performance level and features which what the Xenos was based off of. By 2006 days after the PS3 was released with a gimped Geforce 7800 chipset. The Geforce 8800GTX came out creaming both consoles gpu's combined. MS and Sony are not going to create another money pit of a console spending hundreds more per unit and taking a major lost until years later. MS is looking at AMD fusion APU tech for their next console which is made to use less power, take up less space, produce less heat and cheaper to produce. Which means your not going to produce a powerhouse with that setup that compares to even today medium-high ranged Pc's.

It takes years to design and produce a working model of a console and when ever they start that is where the console hardware will be based from making them not better then Pc's from the same time they started.

Simple steps to see if YOU should get a PC!!!!

Step 1: See what games you usually play.

Step 2: Determine if those games are only on consoles.

Step 3: ........

Step 4: PROFIT!!!!!!!

^^ Follow these steps, and the choice should be simple :D

You can play Halo 1, Halo 2, Gears of War 1, Fable 1 (the superior game), Fable 3, and Remedy still wants to port Alan Wake but MS has to give them the green light (also Project Dark may come to the pc if Namco decides to in the future). Killzone 2 was the worst fps I played this gen so I couldn't care less about Killzone 3. It is not clear if Ni no Juni will be good, but I hope it will.

I would look at how bad the console companies are going to try to get away with in ripping people off next gen. The trend is to try to milk people for more and more money for absurd stuff. For example if both PSN and XBL are pay for online, I would say definitely go with the PC.

As far as the controller thing goes, get a 360 controller with a PC dongle. Many games support it. Some games don't support controllers which can get pretty annoying because its not like its a lot of work to put controller support in. Then there is xpadder: a free program that allows you to configure your gamepad as if it were a mouse. For online FPS, a mouse is pretty much necessary if you don't want to get owned.

One thing to consider too is that for many PC games you can't really buy them used (or sell them). No rentals. However, on steam you can get some pretty awesome deals. I think I bought about 10 games for about $40 during the xmas sales.

Some PC games can be pretty rough around the edges in terms of polish, gameplay, and just simply getting them to work properly, but once you play games at 1080p and 60fps you will feel disgusted playing the same games on consoles.

PC gamers are also a more mature crowd. You don't have to deal with the annoying screaming little kids. The biggest bonus of PC gaming imo.

And as far as that guy who said PC has less variety...lol.

DD is pretty much the standard for PC now, by the next gen, boxed sales will be all but gone.

And sure, all systems get deals, but the consoles will never EVER have deals like Christmas/Summer Steam deals. :P

YES! You can get a PC now and put in a new graphics card in like 3-4 years time that will crap on next gen consoles. My ati 4870 i think is nearly 3 years old and can put out 1080p photo realistic mirrors edge at 60fps.

There's no way of knowing that until next gen starts.

For right now though, go ahaid and build a computer. It'll be at least 2 years if not more until next gen starts, and that's a long time to wait.

Next gen starts in February for Japan and March for the Rest of the World. That is when the first Next Gen system releases and that is when we will consider PC games Next Gen.

Hardly anyone uses handhelds to measure generations. In fact I think that's a recent trend started by a minority of people, seeing as the 90's saw a plethora of handhelds released throughout the decade, and nobody was announcing the start of next gen gaming with each one.

Sounds like a great idea. Always nice to have a powerful computer that can be used for nearly unlimited number of fun and practical things. Being able to play some great games on it is a nice bonus.

hehe...ofc its not photo realistic but still its close in parts. I dont know with the aliasing this is with 8xAA @1920x1080 but still shows the jaggies in pics. I read you can actualy use 32Xaa in mirrors edge which is insane.

That's what I have been doing, and for the most part, I'm satisfied. Now, the PC isn't without its genre weaknesses, I'll admit. You probably won't get most of the newer fighting games, shmups, JRPGs, or platformers without going into methods that are legally grey at best. On the other hand, the PC is the only platform with hardcore flight simulators (seriously, just try and show me Falcon 4.0 or DCS: Black Shark on a console, because IT DOESN'T EXIST!), and it can hold its own on the racing simulator side of things, too. RTSs and MMOGs are usually only found on the PC. FPSs and a lot of other games generally aren't PC-exclusive these days, but that doesn't stop the PC version from reaping the benefits of the best graphics potential, mods (which apply to other genres too), online play (PC games generally tend to have more people playing at once in dedicated servers), controls, that sort of thing. Oh, and don't forget the indie hits that tend to not make their way on consoles. If you're feeling masochistic, you could try to take on VVVVVV and I Wanna Be The Guy-but not on a console (even if their inspirations tend to be retro console games). Feeling creative/destructive enough for Minecraft? Again, not on consoles. Another thing to consider with PC gaming is that while the hardware is expensive, the software is generally much more affordable. Did you see the last Christmas Steam sales, by any chance, let alone all the other sales going on at places like GoGamer, GamersGate, and pretty much any other place that sells PC games? You can rack up tons of games for pretty cheap. I guess it helps when PC game developers don't have to pay royalties just to develop for the things. Now, comparing to next-gen consoles...we probably still won't see those for another few years, in which case technology will advance to the point where they're more powerful than any current PC. But so will PC tech, to the point where their top-of-the-line will still have an edge over the consoles when they release-if you can pay the price. Besides, it's the PC enthusiasts who basically feed the R&D departments of the corporations making the CPUs and especially GPUs found in consoles these days. Oh, and remember this if you can afford it: There's no rule stating that you have to own only a gaming PC or a console. I actually own several consoles, albeit most of them being retro ones. (Maybe I'll add a PS3 to my fleet, but the incentive minimizes if I'm mostly going to be playing PS2 games on it and the occasional exclusive that hasn't made its way over to the PC.)
