depends on the size of the tv... I have a 62" hdtv... thats not gonna fit on my computer desk... and i dont want to plop my computer desk in the middle of my living room.

but i dont think monitors or hdtvs should be considered a part of system costs in general.

markinthedark

I always plug my PC into my home theater. Also you don't have to use KB/M for PC gaming.

would kinda ruin PC gaming online if i had to play a bunch of KB/M users on a controller...

Then just use the KB/M with your TV and deal with it :P I do it a lot, mostly because my TV is better than any monitor (aside from the monitor version of itself), and I enjoy blasting some 7.1 audio.

Oh, and paying $50 a year for Live is nothing like spending a couple of hundred on a new... GPU or CPU.R3FURBISHED
It's worse. When I had put down money for Live I know very well that my money is going nowhere, only towards being allowed to access game content I already paid for. At least when I put that same amount of money down on a new release title, or towards a video card, then I actually am getting something tangible from it. So yes, it is much worse.

I can agree with this... once fees for online play become mandatory in all consoles, that's definitely when I make my exit from the console gaming realm and become PC exclusive. Luckily Sony still has a good online model. Nintendo is just bad from top to bottom in all their downloadable and online efforts, but at least it's free.

yea i would be lying if i said i wasnt upset by the trend. I was expecting MS to eventually begin lowering online costs to compete with sony as PSN began gaining steam.... apparently they accidentally went the wrong way on their pricing scheme. Hopefully they will still allow gamers in the know to get heavy discounts on XBL like they have done in the past.

Next gen playstation might be my primary gaming console if PSN stays free... it might have been this gen if PSN wasnt such hot garbage at launch. Im probably gonna finish this gen out mostly gaming on the 360 though simply because thats the system all my multiplats are for. It would be alot more expensive to sell and rebuy them on the ps3 than just pay the online fees.

If PSN starts charging, i may just full time switch back to PC like i did in all the gens before this one. I do tend to prefer the ease of use and online features of xbox live though... and i hate DRM. So I will be a little sad if that is the case.

Pc pricing is dependant on the person's knowledge and ability. People that buy laptops and expect to be able to play modern games, need to realize laptops arent made for "high end" gaming
Then you have the Kids that dont have jobs and or limited funds that dont know what options they have to choose from. Such as upgrading the family computer which can be a easy $60 gpu upgrade cost if the Pc was build and bought within the last 4 years to spending only a couple hundred to overhaul the current machine.
Being able to choose the right parts and smart choices can come along way in longevity. Also being able to to reuse items can also save money. You can pick up a great deals if you know where to look. A month ago you could have picked up a 9800GT for like $65 after rebate or even now a Gt 240(9600 performance) for $48 after rebate. Both gpu's are multiple times faster then ethier console. It is possible to build a simple budget gaming Pc that out does the console abilites for around $500 the same price area as the PS3 was back in 2007
Most of the work is already done all you need to do is add the gpu, and there you go a budget pc that can run games at better graphical settings then the consoles.

Well, you're comparing a $500 2010 PC to the cost of a PS3 system in 2007. To be fair, you'd have to compare the cost of building a PC in 2007 to the cost of a PS3 in 2007. And to be really fair, you should compare the cost of a PS3 during some sort of deal(like the $100 off deal Sony Style ran on PS3s for the longest time during that time period, which is when I picked up a PS3) because you're using PC parts that are under MSRP/deals.

Here's my take on the PC/console price issue.

Back in 2005, the 360 was released with one of the most powerful GPUs ever seen up to that point in time. The only PC graphics card that could match up against Xenos was the $600 7800 GTX. If you wanted to get the best graphics at a reasonable price back in 2005 your best bet was to buy a $300/$400 360.

IMO the best time to 'jump' into PC gaming is mid-console lifecycle. By this point, hardware prices drop dramatically, a GTX 460 768mb for $200 puts Xenos to absolute shame, and really powerful CPUs are also available for low prices. At this point, it becomes possible to buy a budget PC for $600 that completely outpaces the consoles and affordably gives you the advantages of PC gaming.

Maybe not top of the line but I'm pretty sure some laptops can hold there own.

Take this $1000 ASUS for example:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220696

  • i7 720QM1.6ghzCPU (2.8ghz with turbo boost)
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • ATI Mobility HD5730 w/ 1GB DDR3 VRAM
  • 320GB 7,200RPM HDD
  • 16inch 1377x768 LED backlit screen

"Compared to desktop graphics cards, the HD 5730 should be similar to a Radeon 5570 (except the desktop version uses faster GDDR5)." http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5730.23825.0.html

or this $1300 MSI:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152192

  • i7 720QM1.6ghzCPU (2.8ghz with turbo boost)
  • 4GB DDR3 RAM
  • ATI Mobility HD5870 w/ 1GB DDR5 VRAM
  • 500GB 7,200RPM HDD
  • 17inch 1680x1050 LED backlit screen

"Compared to desktop graphics cards, the Mobility Radeon HD 5870 should perform somewhere between a Radeon HD 5750 and 5770 according to the specs (shader count of 5770, clock rate of 5750)." http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.23073.0.html

Though your obviously going to be paying more as it is a laptop.

Even back in 2007 I spent only $650 to build my gaming pc. reusing some parts from the older Pc(at best saved me $70). And it had a dual core cpu, 2gb of memory, and a 8800GT. The 8800GT in 2007 was $250 which is at least 3x faster with 2x the memory then any of the console gpu's. Its shows how really far and old the consoles really are when a $50 gpu is 2x faster with 2x the memory then the current consoles.

Just to play devil's advocate though, if you owned a launch console and held out to 2010 for the PC exclusives, you could've worked in a GTX 460, 4gb of memory and a (cheap) quad core CPU for that price point by the time that build was made.

In 2005, a 360 will be far more affordable than a comparative PC rig.

In 2007, a 360 will be somewhat more affordable than a comparative PC rig.

In 2010, it'd be possible to build a PC rig that is more powerful than a comparative console at a low price point.

But the thing is, who really waits that long without either a PC rig or a console? And there is still the issue of missing out on exclusive games, of course.

yea thats where most people go wrong... with laptops the first $400 is pretty much just the cost of all the hardware and parts not related to performance (screen, dvd drive, OS, case etc.). So its real important to invest that little bit extra and try to hit the $1000-1200 if you wanna hit the price/performance sweet spot.

My gf needed a laptop for school and a pc for gaming back in january. I was originally going to find her a separate laptop then build her a budget rig. But after pricing it out i just decided she should spend the $1000 and had her get thishttp://www.overclock.net/laptops-notebook-computers/660530-asus-g72gx-rbbx-05-gaming-performance.html

For a grand it can max just about every PC game out there except crysis... not bad for a 8 month old $1000 laptop imo. I originally had no plans on buying her a gaming laptop, because gaming laptops of old used to cost multiple thousands and have crappy performance. Im surprised how good gaming laptops are these days.

My PC is still the most expensive gaming piece I have ever bought.

R3FURBISHED

If you factor in the free online, the cheap peripherals and the cheaper games over a modest period of two years, you'll find out that the PC actually saved you money over the consoles. I can't believe that in the year 2010, people still fall for the old "cheap printer, expensive ink cartridges" trick over and over again.

Considering you actually use your CPU or GPU for something important makes it a much more worthwhile investment, considering you can play online with it still.

ATTENTION!

Everyone forgets the most important part about gaming. THE GAMES!

Console games cost on average $60 while PC games are $10 to $30 less.

Take F1 2010 for example which hasn't even launched yet:

Xbox 360 - $59.99

PS3 - $59.99

PC - $35.99

That's $24 less to get the best version of the game on PC.

NVIDIATI

Um, the big PC releases cost $45-50 on PC and $60 on consoles.

That is unless you count smaller games which I can buy on my PS3 as well for $10.

This is all I have to say to anyone thinking its "expensive:"

The PC you are posting on right now is capable of playing games... and in most cases, should run some of the best games the PC has to offer. Hell, a PC I got for free came with a Celeron rated at 2.5 GHz, 1GB DDR-333 RAM and an integrated GPU... and it can run games like System Shock 2, Age of Empires II, StarCraft, Deus Ex, Fallout, Planescape: Torment and Half Life perfectly. And I'd play those games any day of anything offered from modern PC gaming.

foxhound_fox

And the PC I'm posting on cost 900 euros... What's your point?

There was a similar thread about this recently and a console gamer stated he bought his HDTV just for gaming. Many gamers are doing this. When you buy a HDTV of any decent spec (above 720p and 60Hz), that cost is figured into the price of console gaming. Add in any audio gear that one buys to compliment said TV and console and one could spend up to $2000 just to play games on a console.

dude i know a guy who bought 3 $2000 gaming PCs this gen alone.... as you can see one can easily spend up to $6000 just to play games on PC.

srsly get out of here with these ridiculous arguments.... just because some can spend an infinite amount on consoles or PCs doesnt mean that the cost of gaming on them.

If i spent $100,000 installing a movie theater in my house in order to game on consoles... should we now consider the price of console gaming $100,000?

There was a similar thread about this recently and a console gamer stated he bought his HDTV just for gaming. Many gamers are doing this. When you buy a HDTV of any decent spec (above 720p and 60Hz), that cost is figured into the price of console gaming. Add in any audio gear that one buys to compliment said TV and console and one could spend up to $2000 just to play games on a console.

markinthedark

dude i know a guy who bought 3 $2000 gaming PCs this gen alone.... as you can see one can easily spend up to $6000 just to play games on PC.

srsly get out of here with these ridiculous arguments.... just because some can spend an infinite amount on consoles or PCs doesnt mean that the cost of gaming on them.

If i spent $100,000 installing a movie theater in my house in order to game on consoles... should we now consider the price of console gaming $100,000?

When people try to include the cost of speakers, mouse, keyboard and monitors in the cost of PC gaming, then anything that would be bought for console gaming should be included with the cost of console gaming. People keep making the same old arguments while trying to compare apples to oranges. We already know that you dislike PC gaming. At least come up with some new arguments instead of the same irrelevant one.

JLF1

Um, the big PC releases cost $45-50 on PC and $60 on consoles.

That is unless you count smaller games which I can buy on my PS3 as well for $10.

And the number of $60 games are rising, sadly. Modern Warfare 2, StarCraft 2, Assassin's Creed 2, Splinter Cell Conviction, Medal of Honor, and in the future, Crysis 2 and Dead Space 2 (see EA store). Obviously it's nowhere near as bad as the HD consoles but it is a disturbing trend.

Consoel games seem to remain 20% more expensive than Pc games in Europe. MW2 and SC2 are examples of that.

What's even more crazy is that a Move or Kinect controller will more or less cost the same as a new Wii.

Yeah, but you can buy them cheaper sooner. Discounts on PC games happen very quickly.

Not to mention steam deals. Example for a week they had Shattered Horizon (normally $20) down to $5, and loads of other games had huge discounts.

My PC is my most expensive gaming platform. I don't complain about it, but it is.

I found this hilarious, and I'm pretty sure the Wii games I like will be better than anything MS or Sony can bring (bar KZ3.....)

PC is expensive, but you wont see me complain about it. I like having choices of the hardwear I own. If i wanted to make a cheap PC that could play todays games, I would probably need to spend at least $700. I'm talking LCD monitor, cpu, ram, harddrive,OS, all that good stuff.

You just said that F1 2010 was $60 on PS3 and $36 on the PC. Where did I say that you can buy F1 2010 on PSN for $10 :?

I was obviously talking about smaller games for $5-15 on PSN.

Steam-deals is amazing but steam prices tend to be much higher than retail games for much longer.

Kane and Lynch 2 is still 50€ on steam and I bought it last week new for PS3 for 25€.

F1 2010 is a pretty big game... And there are other titles that are lower than $45-$50. I was just saying you pushed it aside pretty fast even though I gave an example. I guess I wasn't clear enough in my reply.

You win some loose some by only gaming on PC or consoles.

PC retail games drop like a rock after a month or two but Steam prices are usually $30-50 (if there is consoles version) for much longer than retail console games.

For consoles you can usually find good deals before the game releases, and even afterwards at Amazon. BFBC2 has been at $40 for a few weeks now at Amazon. But yeah on the PC I got BFBC2 at the EA store for $30 just 1 month after the game was out.

[QUOTE="SPYDER0416"]

Considering how many PS3 owners likely picked it up at the $400 or less price point and the cheapest Wii and 360 are $200 then there is no double standard here, PC gaming is just expensive. Its expensive to have a PC capable of running games at a level equal to or better then consoles (unless you prefer cheap rigs that play games as if they had PS2 era graphics and loaded with issues), then you have the need to upgrade every few years, with more upgrades then console life spans.

edo-tensei

Considering ps3 owners DID buy it for $600, and considering wii gives a full experience for that pricetag..... I'm going to disagree. Oh also you don't need the top of the line in pc hardware to play your games at the same and or higher resolution than the hd consoles.

that is not true. most people waited till the price came down to 299. seriously get you facts straight.
