So the article is basically "Sony wins because Microsoft's games are on PC and Sony's games are also on the PC but only after a delay and Nintendo doesn't count for some reason".

It's pretty basic stuff. It also isn't correct, because the PS5 has had bugger all exclusives so far, and Nintendo will win/has won on sales and games.

If you have to go for the 'console war' win you probably have an obsolete ecosystem propped up by desperate exclusivity.

A console is just a budget computer product to supplement your wider gaming footprint.

That's why Nintendo is having a grand ol' time with this 'archaic' model of theirs.

Haven't seriously used my Switch in over a year. When I do it's a pretty sub-par experience; especially the part where it takes hours to build up enough charge to turn on. When I do have it charged up I could complain about the abysmal wifi speed, or lack of network port on the OG dock, or the piss-poor ergonomics, or the lack of onboard storage, or the lack of support for all the controller options in various games, or the dumb amiibo DRM, or the awful performance in certain games, or the archaic social features, or gating cloud-saves behind a fee that comes with a bunch of other crap I don't want. Nintendo could do way better if they wanted to.

Before you start listing off sales number, consider that I don't actually care about sales. I care about my experience, and how much my time is respected. In terms of big players in the industry, Nintendo is rock-bottom with Sony sitting right above them. Can't be arsed to take them seriously.

Does anyone have numbers for PSN+ (or whatever they call it now)?

The last i heard, it generated more revenue on its own than Nintendo's entire business operation. The way articles are going on, it sounds like everyone is subbing to gamepass and no one is subbing to sonys services on PS. This would be strange if true.

As for exclusives: on paper MS now have a formidable set of devs and IP. Elder scrolls, Doom, Quake, Halo, Dishonoured, Wolfenstein, Fallout, Forza, Age of Empires and so on...not exactly nothing. hell MS could probably build a console just to play elder scrolls 6 :P. It remains to be seen if these developers deliver though. Bethesda, especially, have not been delivering on the quality front since Skyrim, if we are being honest.

So its going to be interesting to see how this plays out. Sony are stuck in a tight spot. The exclusives to sell hardware to rope people into the walled garden strategy....i dont think its going to scale anymore. Nintendo saw the writing on the wall a decade ago and bailed out of the horsepower race to keep their costs under control. They can survive a Switch 2 only pulling in 20-30 million sales. it would be a beating but they could still dust themselves down and try again.

At the moment, if Sony ever have a repeat of the PS3 even or, god forbid, a PS6 or 7 that only pulls in vita numbers.....thats it. game over. All those studios and 100+ million budgets to support a console that will only sell 25 million units over 5 years....that would be utterly devastating even to a colossal company like sony. In fairness to them i think they know this too. even a very successful 100+ million selling PS5 is still very risky with modern production budgets. They have to (and are) spreading the risk.

I expect ps5 and xbox series x sales to be even more one sided than ps4 and xbox one x. I expect like a 3-1. Now nintendo can give sony completion xbox not so much.

My predictions are that Playstation will have the strongest start, continuing where the PS4 left off. But Xbox is on the right path going from strength to strength. This gen may not end the way Playstation fans think and next gen certainly won't begin the way they think.

Yea, but hardware is what keeps you on the platform. If 100 million people have PS5, that's 100 million people that will be buying games on that platform.

Hardware in general isn't a small portion of revenue. It makes up like 25% ($6-7B) of PlayStation's yearly revenue.

The PlayStation consoles probably don't make much money but, the accessories they sell on said platforms do and with pretty large profit margins. There's a reason why Nintendo loves accessories and, why Xbox controllers work on PC ... it's easy money.

@greygoose12: The standard console strategy since the Famicom/NES days is to sell the hardware at a loss and make a profit on the software. Hardware sales drive software sales, where the real money is at.

Nope but I've decided to just wait it out for now and not stress about it. Until it really starts affecting me not being able to play the new, non BC games, I'm okay. I think that starts with the new Forza Motorsports probably 1st or 2nd quarter next year but thanks for trying to get me a XSX all those times. ;)

The age-old console strategy still works for Sony and Nintendo, who both sell tons of software to their hardware owners. Why fix what isn't broken? But the strategy hasn't worked out so well for Xbox, so it's in their best interest to explore alternative strategies. Game Pass would normally be a high-risk strategy, but Microsoft has enough cash to burn, so it's a risk they can afford to take.

Yea, if Sony and Nintendo continue to sell way more than Xbox, how will Xbox make up for it with GamePass? They will have to try to get non-console people which I think will be tough.

I wouldn't count your chickens on this one.

Sony's presence in Japan is next to zero this generation and the battle for the west is going to be razor thin, especially with the Series S being more easily produced than the PS5.

If anything it's going to be very close like the PS3/360 generation. When the Bethesda games start dropping MS may actually best Sony by generations end.

@SolidGame_basic: I'm guessing MS might try integrate Xbox Game Pass with Windows. But the problem is they'd be competing with Steam, GOG and Epic Store on PC. And we've seen how Epic Store has failed miserably against Steam despite all the free giveaways. And Netflix now also wants to start its own Game Pass like service. MS will have to face more competitors besides just Sony and Nintendo. That's why Game Pass is such a risky endeavour.

So please provide a link showing the 360 outselling the ps3 last gen. I’ll wait…

https://www.statista.com/statistics/682851/installed-base-of-microsoft-game-consoles/

In 2019, the installed base of Microsoft Xbox 360 was estimated to remain at 100.6 million units.

AMD confirms this as well.

Dude, I don’t speak gibberish.

Show me “units sold”.

We get it. You need flash cards and pictures. NEXT time son, next time.

"MISSLEADING. the Xbox 360 sold 84 million AS OF 2014. the PS3 sold 87 million as of 2017. there is a whole 3 years of missing sales from the 360 sales number."

Just except it already, at the end of that gen and the start to a new gen, BS3 lost!! lol :P

Yes, flash cards and pictures, and not a carousel.

@x_hedon: Kvally that's not units sold, please though by all means show us some actual info showing the ps3 didn't beat out the 360...you've had years and years to prepare, should be easy.

@vfighter: actually the onus is on you to disprove 100.6 million Xbox 360 end users claimed by AMD and Statisica.

I am sure AMD would like to know how you know more than them.

Nope, OX Xbox beat Game Cube for 2nd place. 360 beat BS3 at the end of that gen. Xbox One beat Wii U last gen.

Nuttin but the fax mam. :P

Every single source i can find says the PS3 beat the 360. Sorry but Xboxe's most successful console ever finished 3rd place.
