 Because you certainly can't buy cheaper used games from Gamestop or new/used and cheaper games on Ebay huh?killab2oo5
There are retail chains that carry used PC games like McKay's Used Bookstore where I live. Gots me Civ 4 for 10 bucks, Devil May Cry 3 Limited edition for 5, and quite a few other games for cheap as crap.

Sorry, I forgot that your word = law.

Actually u can build a PC similar to mine with a 8800GT which would crush any console for $800.Thinker_145

This is something I could accomplish on my first try?

And, only twice as much as the most expensive console. Obviously cheaper.

Ya why not.

You find nice deals on eBay for DMC3:SEand...I dont know what to compare to Civ 4. I was just saying that you don't have to buy all your games as suggested retail price.

Nowhere near the extent McKay's does. Its the only place in my city that carries games as old as the Turbo Grafx 16. I mean, I walk in that store with a 20 dollar bill and walk out with a carton of music CDs, some wallscrolls, PC games, Nintendo games, and maybe even an audio book or two.

You save $10-$20 on every game you buy and no doubt hardcore gamers who buy alot of games will have their money recovered sometime down the road.

/thread.No more discussion possible.

Thinker_145

You're an idiot. That's assuming they buy a lot of games for their pc. We al know that the pc has great games but they are few and far between.

I paid 250 for my Wii. A friend of mine built a great pc for 1000. Do you realize how many games I'd have to buy to make up 750? You fail.

the costs of constantly upgrading your PC to keep up with newer games is insane.

that's the main reason why i stopped PC gaming, and moved on to consoles indefinitely.

ok even when you calculate it out.

most expensive console is 500 dollars

and to get a a great computer could cost you 800 dollars like you said

at buying 20 games at retail price over the course of the generation

60 for console games and 50 for PC games

total would equal 1700 dollars spent on Console and games

and 1800 on PC and games.

and this is takeing into acount the most expesnive consoles not the Wii or cheaper console models.

True it would even out eventually at this rate facts or facts PC gameing does cost more then console gameing. Its just not as much as people make it out to be.

PC gaming is definitely more expensive up front, no doubt about it. A DX10 rig is also more expensive than consoles no doubt about it. However, a rig on par with consoles or slightyl better is moderately more expensive, and that price differential can easily be negated over the span of a generation.

Look, there is no denying that a PC built Today for lets say $900.00 will smoke any of the this gen consoles but...

Nov. 2005, you buy a 360 - gives you great gaming fun and pretty good GRX & AI ect. and 5 - 6 years roll around and the next new console hits and the buy in is, lets say $500.00.

5-6 years of some awesome gaming ( 360 ) and the next incarnation in maybe 2011 comes; you lay down that $400.00 - $500.00 and again the gamer with that console is good for another five years and on the cutting edge ( or at least near to it ) of gaming.

If one was to go all out and build themselves a super gaming PC today and spends $2500.00 - $3500.00, I guarantee that the next MS console will make that $2500.00 PC purchased today look like a bad move in 2010/2011 !

Tiz the vicious circle of PC gaming and worse now with MS in the console game.

It's all good as this is a hobby and if you want the best tech. of the day; you're going to pay for it but the bitter taste of holding that high tech of today in comparison to what comes a few years later - that 2500.00 spent yesterday is now worth 500.00 maybe. :?

Everything right with PC gaming as long as you can afford and stomach the dwindling value of the hardware purchased.

Just IMO as I have been there done that - though many here have better resources and knowledge in this area of PC gaming and make it work for them - that is what prolly separates the PC gamer from the console only gamer so if you find a way to make it work for you - great but it just doesn't work for all gamers equally :).

I bought a used PC game for 5 dollars yesterday. I've also sold my pc games for some decent money. Instead of going to Gamestop go to a local gaming store. Personally I think that the cost shouldn't be a deterent to anyone. I like gaming so I budget my money accordingly. Now since I'm in college and money is usually tight I mostly buy used (console and pc games) and dont plan on getting a high end PC until after i graduate but even then Diablo 2 will probably still be my favorite game and I'll still play Super Mario 3 more than the latest and greatest fps of the time. If money is your thing then budget it and quit trying to fight a utterly ridiculus fight over what is cheaper.

Who's telling you to buy a $2500 PC???That is obviously a waste of money and those who do spend that much money on a PC are aware of the fact that how quickly there investmenst will depriciate.$2500 can last you a decade of PC gaming.

And what 5-6 years of gaming on a console.Last time i checked only one last gen console last that much longer. The xbox lasted only 4 years and the GC only 3 years with their owners getting zelda tp 2 years later.

And consoles value also come down.Look at the ps3 with it's price cuts.

You can't disprove a fact, by definition.

Actually PC gamers pirate their games crippling the industry . If you are a smart gamer you get one of those programs where you can rent unlimited number of games , however you can only own 2 at a time . it's pretty cheap actually. when you are bored you send it back.

ok even when you calculate it out.

most expensive console is 500 dollars

and to get a a great computer could cost you 800 dollars like you said

at buying 20 games at retail price over the course of the generation

60 for console games and 50 for PC games

total would equal 1700 dollars spent on Console and games

and 1800 on PC and games.

and this is takeing into acount the most expesnive consoles not the Wii or cheaper console models.

True it would even out eventually at this rate facts or facts PC gameing does cost more then console gameing. Its just not as much as people make it out to be.

Vandalvideo
Its more like 650-700 for a PC on par with consoles.

If your gonna be a PC gamer...wouldn't you want your rig to be up to PC standards? >.> Who wants to game on outdated hardware? Yea,you can lower settings on PC games, but no one wants to do that. If they're going to start off gaming on PC they want a rig that will max out most games at the time.

buy used games

Buy used games for PC even cheaper?

lol what kind of moron buys a used pc game

I do. We have a place called Mckay's that carries used PC games, and you can trade in your PC games as well. I got Civ 4 for 10 bucks last night.

Out of curiosity, how do they check for CDKEY usage? Or is it your own risk?

You save $10-$20 on every game you buy and no doubt hardcore gamers who buy alot of games will have their money recovered sometime down the road.

/thread.No more discussion possible.

You're an idiot. That's assuming they buy a lot of games for their pc. We al know that the pc has great games but they are few and far between.

I paid 250 for my Wii. A friend of mine built a great pc for 1000. Do you realize how many games I'd have to buy to make up 750? You fail.

To spend $750, well here in Europe lets say 750EUR. I would have to buy 12-13 Wii games to spend 750EUR or 10 Xbox360 games, or 8 PS3 games. So in general for 1000EUR I can get around ~15 games for the consoles, on the other side I can get ~25-30 PC games.

It is pricey no matter how you turn it. I buy around 10 games a year for my systems, it's my luck that they are PC games and I don't flick a forute out. I own a Wii and it's really hard for me to decide weather to buy a game or not, even tho, Wii games are the cheapest they still cost a lot more as the PC games, and it's a wallet breaker granted.

Considering CIV4 really never asks for a cdkey for the most part, and I can always use Hamachi, it doesn't matter. They don't carry any PC games that would require such a cdkey. And even if they did, they keep track of who trades tuff in.

I'm getting sick and tired of all this bullocks about "OMG YOU NEED A DX10 RIG", no you don't. I have a moderate rig of 7900GS, 2GIGS DDR2, and a Pentium D945 dual core. Its providing graphics far superior to consoles, it was cheap, and it will last me a significant ammount of time.

Well then the choice of PC games is rather dim there, considering more then half of the games released require a CDKEY, especially the more popular games, especially for online play. Hamachi really isn't the best solution here, playing over hamachi or playing as it was supposed to be are two total different worlds. Imagine playing games like Quake or UT through Hamachi, kinda defeats the purpose of owning a game like that :).

But as you said, they don't carry the games that require CDKEYs. Console users are clearly better of with buying used games.

Actually, that statistic is extremely far off. Only the newest games have begun requiring CD keys, even in that instance its something that can easily be avoided. but then again, like I said, they will carry those games many times. These not really any conflicts going on. It works perfectly fine. What I was miplying by my statement is that they don't carry MMO games like WoW, Everquest, etc. They do carry many online games like Quake and UT though. Hamachi is a perfectly fine way to fix the problem too, its basically a closed community.

That didn't disprove the belief (one I believe), and neither did your Italian accent in the title.

Well MMOs usually don't require you to have a CDKEY, but you make an account with the KEY and then the KEY is useless and that's it. You can't really trade that except if you trade in the account you created. Games started useing CDKEYs back in 1998, so the statement that games are starting to use them "just now" is wrong.

Quake3, Quake 4, UT2003/04, Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, Vegas, RTCW, WC3, SC, WH40k: DOW, UT3, C&C, WiC, CoD4, Crysis, NFS:xx, to name games from atop of the head all require you to have a CDKEY. And I'm more then willing to bet that over 80% of all games that offer a multiplayer component released from 2000 require you to have a correct CDKEY. I really wound't bother getting into problems after 1-2 years I bought a used game and the previous owner decided to play the same game again, picks up his old paper where he wrote down the CDKEY and starts playing. The store you bought the used games wont give a crap at that time. So the PC games are relatively cheap compared to other games, I rather buy new games in this case.

Games that are older 1995 and pre are usually free to download anwyay from abandonware sites, not all, but a lot.

Hamachi is, as said, a closed community with, and that's the flaw. It's like playing World of Warcraft on a private server, half the fun is missing. But that's my opinion.

I said games started "largely" using them jsut recently within the last generation. It was something that was wide spread or that would have cause any kind of problem. And besides, I haven't ran across a single problem with Mckays, because they keep track of who trades in what, and it largely works on the honor system. Theres never been a single problem from in my stint there. You're trying to make a mound out of an ant hill, and let me tell you, its not going to work. Let me put it bluntly. There are retail chains that carry used PC games, never run into any problems concerning Cdkeys, and provide a cheap alternative to buying the games. Heck, I've even seen them carry WoW before, it was there the last time I checked. They carry more PC games than they do any other individual console. (Doesn't have a cellphone, otherwise he'd take a picture). Hamachi works perfectly fine.

I might also add that hardware components being compatiable with each other is a rediculous argument.. The only time this problem ever happens is the person doesn't actually read...

sSubZerOo

You just don't hear about it because the market is so segmented and each hardware manufacturer has its own support forums and network. With so many pieces of hardware incompatibilities definitely arise but do so on such a small scale that it never raises an uproar the way a 360 RROD does.

For example, I've had these issues happen to me in the past two years:

- K8T890 chipset not compatible with X2 dual core chips; I got the motherboard in the summer of 2005 and wanted to upgrade to an socket 939 X2 processor in 2006, only to find it simply just did not support the chip and I had to dig pretty deep to even find an article on it.

- nVidia 7900GT's and GTX's artifacting heavily in games due to overheating; this was one of the few well-known instances where enough users made the news a "big deal". Incidentally the 7900 series still artifacts in Vista, with a "fix" being o/c'ing the card to non-stock speeds, and with every nVidia driver release (beta and official) it's becoming more and more clear that they no longer care about the 7 series.

- Mouse lagging in an action RPG called Titan Quest; mouse accel issues with Bioshock; other random issues with individual games which range from minor annoyances to game-breaking bugs.

My roommate also just found out digital audio out is not really supported in Vista with its rewritten audio stack.

So yes, there are a ton of compatibility issues with PC's in general - anytime you have so many configurations and not-quite-standard standards holding the components together, things will break, albeit on a smaller scale than a standardized design breaking (e.g., RROD).
