Everyone knows about the Xbox 360 RROD (red ring of death) thanks to some 33% of games consoles getting this problem, now we have proof of the Sony PS3 death with a so called YLOD.

The video below shows a Playstation 3 with yellow lights, it sounds like a hard drive gone bad to me from the clicking noise as that's what I have had with many PC hard drives.

Every product gets faults, but it's just what percentage of that product that counts. We have heard around 1% of PS3's have problems and why shouldn't they, but this is nothing compared to the well known and joked about world-wide RROD.

In the case of the gamer that made this video below, his console has already been taken away by Sony.

See the video at

Can't you just replace the HDD and it will work fine? Instead of sending it into Sony, like MS has you do.

The sad thing about it is when you get these PS3 YLOD there's not warranty to cover it and you have to buy a new PS3.

Whatever that clicking was, it definitely wasn't from the PS3. There's clicking well before he flips the power switch on the back to the on position (in the off position, it's the same as it being unplugged).

Sounds to me the disc head has been damaged on the HDD; anything that uses a HDD it can happen to. You would only have to replace the HDD to fix it, though that would actually make it better!:D

But the reason this would have most likely because the HDD had taken some sort of heavy shock, so if your kind to yours, it should be ok:)

Its not the YLOD, my PS3 has had the yellow light before when I inserted a PS2 game that couldn't be played on the PS3.

All I did was turn the console on and off and it was fixed. But yeah the HDD isn't the only thing causing it. ( I have an 80 gig )

It's how a drastically lower failure rate than the 360 so I feel pretty confident it won't happen to mine. And on a note of the DRE for PS2's, anyone actually try to repair theirs on their own? I got it some time after my warrantly expired so I decided to open it up, cleaned/adjusted the lens using a step by step walkthrough online and it worked. Happened when GTA:VC came out and it worked!!

the disc drive failure is more frequent then the hdd failure...disc drive failure for sonys ps3s is about 18% that stat doesn't go under system failurs tho because the system didn't techincally wreck and not run. It can still run demos and run everything fine, the ps3 just can't read discs.

You can pay to get it repaired or extend your warranty. Same with if your 360 suffers hard drive failure or DRE. Like I have.

If your computer broke and you found out one part of it broke and you're out of warranty would you complain to the maker or get a new one?

Either way, this is an extremely low chance. Try and reformat your HDD first as well.

IF it breaks and IF you didnt buy an extended warranty...yea. I didnt know since MS started to give out 3 year warranties every other company is obligated to do the same.

Yea, okay.

Now lets compare over 4,000,000+ BROKEN XBOX 360s to Sony with less than 10,000 broken consoles.

You can replace the HDD, but how do you get all the firmware and O/S stuff onto the HDD? Doesn't Sony have to put that information on there or does the system automatically download what it needs when you put a new HDD into the PS3.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have the system with the most quality titles on it. The XBox 360 has a FREE 3yr warranty. No one knows what the fail rate is of either 360 or PS3. All of those number are just guesses.

The guy writing the article is not a very good investigator, he should pay attention and see that he turns on the power while this clicking noise is occuring. And while the noise is occuring he assumes it's the HDD while the clicking was already there to begin with, even before the main power on the console came on. Makes no sense at all.

I'm sorry but EVERYTHING in this world (besides Chuck Norris), has defects and problems here and there. You cannot promise 100% success rate, but if you're taking that 1% failure rate, turn it round to 99% with no problems, I think it seems fair.

Nothing can be perfect, cars, planes scientific machinery, everything has problems now and then, why pick on 1% of PS3 consoles??

Sorry for anger i'm just not in a great mood :P

If its a hard drive failure like you said, then thats nothing to do with the console. Sony doesn't make the hard drives, and its easy to replace the hard drive if necessary. So there is in fact nothing wrong with the console, ridiculous thread.

There is a warranty for a reasonable period of time, Ps3 arent as crappy as the 360s. Less than 1& of Ps3s sold are defective according to Sony.
